Could this be of any use? It's a capture from the "Behind The Scenes" video #1 they released maybe a month ago. I was scanning through it yesterday to see something unrelated, and I noticed this spliced in, kinda out of nowhere. Are the compass pictures like this common in the old cartography, and the picture is genuine historical document, or is this something ARG related?

I think this might be were they got that image from and altered it for the game.

you can read more about it here:

And here you can find info on how to read it and what the symbols might mean.

It could indicate that the symbol we are apparently piecing together isn't a compass- it could be some sort of decoder.

Yep, very likely seeing as it's divided into 26 segments (some sections have 3 segments, some have 4 - you'd never find this on a normal compass.)

Tis now a waiting game until we have all/nearly all of the pieces Smile

*paces impatiently*

New website found:

There, among many other things, a wax seal with four more symbols:

Hi all, just signed up 2 mins ago. Saw the new info over at neogaf, don't know where it came from.

Made a quick image of the slices: (I also circled what looks like a 'I')

The last slice (behind the scenes) could be number 'II' as seen in the pics on the uncharted page (II V VII) http://www.us.playstation.com/Uncharted/#story

And another theory: Since the new slice has number 9 (IX) and the tattoo slice has 7 (VII), they match the buttons with 4 letters on telephones (7=pqrs 9=wxyz).
But there should be no 'I' on the compass if this were the case. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_keypad

edit:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the discovered with elena site also prompts you to send her a mail with the craigslist map.

I just emailed Elena and attached the image of the Craigslist map. This is the email I got in response (minus the footer disclaimer about the message being from the ARG) and the image attached.

Quote:
Thank you for helping me locate the 'Drake' map. I've checked it out and after closer inspection, I'm starting to think it's not a fake. I've cleaned up the map a bit and attached a piece to the left hand corner that may help to unlock some of the secrets Drake has hidden in it.

Hey, you helped me. I'm just returning the favor.

Happy hunting,

-Elena

I don't know if I'm working anything out, but looking at the pattern of the numbers on the compass I presumed that the sequence would look like this:

This ignores 1, as I think the telephone dial might be correct. I then applied all the symbols to the letters on a telephone dial, so each has it's own letter. I thought that maybe applying these to the enigma machine in order they are on the map might give us something. I don't think it did. There are two symbols I don't know though...the triangle n the circle with a cross through it.(I'll show these with a space

I got l ip9l ip8899:did f

That was with the far right pointer being down. I think I'm just reading way too much into it

*edit* forget all that, I'm just being stupid.

Yeah, there's no I on the compass/decoder. The stamp picture shows that 'I' was in fact IX. The telephone idea sounds very plausible to me, except for one thing - there were no such telephones in the time Francis Drake lived, and this map is presumably encoded by him.

I got that same picture from Elena, but it looks to be the same exact symbols we already got through image enhancement.

My thoughts exactly, but it's the only theory I managed to come up with.

Maybe...but Drake needn't have been the person to encode it.

Just sharing my thoughts on the map symbols.

Could they be arranged in accordance with drakes journeys? This at least provides a way to arrange them.

The roman numerals on the poster:

IX VII XXV LXXIX
9 7 25 79

edit:

Date at bottm right corner:
Poster1 - 1596
Poster2 - 9 32 79 (9 7 25 79 -> 7+25=32)
