Embrace the Chaos - a Seminar on ARGs - POSTPONED - EDIT: WE NEED MARKET RESEARCH HELP! http://tinyurl.com/yvl29u Just a quick note. On November 2nd, unfiction is sponsoring a seminar on ARGs for marketing, media and game professionals. The event will be held in Elabash Recital Hall at 34th and 5th Avenue in NYC. Registration will be $175 before October 1st and $200 later.
Our site about the seminar will be up (very) soon. Right now we have a splash page with a fantastic design created by colin. Thanks Colin!
www.embracethechaos.org
This seminar came about as a way for unfiction to raise money and continue to be self-sustaining. All proceeds from the seminar will go to unfiction. I think this is the first ever conference created by consumers/ players or target audience to educate developers on how to make great content for that audience.
All of our speakers (list to follow) have agreed to donate their time and expenses to the seminar.
One thing we need is two volunteers who can help during the day with errands, check-in for registration, etc. If you are interested in volunteering, and can be there, please let me know. Volunteers can attend the event for free.
More later.
[EDIT] Changed the topic to reflect status and de-stickied for now. -Gisk

I'll be in NYC, but I am currently in a delicate financial situation, so I guess it's a no show from me
However, if there are any UF social events, I'll gladly stop by .

Damn. I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kids!
But seriously, I spoke to rose privately about this, and we're trying to work things out.

Well I'm working on plans to get there... the train is pretty cheap and the station is only 2 or 3 blocks from the Elabash Recital Hall (which is right next to the Empire State Building, for those who like landmarks)
If I make it, I'll be going for the weekend - traveling on the 1st, returning on the 4th. Would love to see some sites as I've never been to NYC before. (like Times Square, Lady Liberty, etc)
Still many weeks to get plans hashed out, but it would be great to meet more people, and I'd encourage you to go if you can. It's not ARGfest, but it's the same community of people . It'll be good times! Can't wait to see the schedule and who's on the list of speakers.

I can offer a firm "maybe". I just can't be sure I can be there that day. So I won't make a promise to volunteer that I'm not sure I can keep. If you still need help closer to the day I'll be in touch.

I think rose already counts me in as a volunteer, but I'd just like to say that I will be attending the conference as well, so yay, two US trips for me this year

Thanks for the great response everyone ! We now will have plenty of volunteers. In addition to the people who are helping to organize, produce materials and run the event: space, gupfee, scrappy, giskard, xnbomb, colin and chelec...we have bagsbee, EGo (probably) HetMasteen, theBruce (probably), Aliendial (maybe) and redkidk(probably)
Also, my son whose forum name I think is daemonsoldier(?) should be there. That may seem like a good number of people, but I've learned from ARGfest that lots of last minute questions and individual stuff comes up. Plus, things happen and people may not be able to make it at the last minute. I also planned for extra people so that people can take turns and not be stuck all day out in the lobby checking people in. We will be setting up a place for the volunteers to be able to coordinate their information.
Now, to work on getting all those paying customers . The conference will hold 150 people and I plan to work as hard as possible to sell every ticket. Help with marketing the conference is needed and appreciated.
For those of you who can't be here: this isn't to replace ARGFest. In fact, for me, the driving force behind this conference is to have money that we can then use, in part, to help support the costs of ARGFest and unfiction. We don't want to use ads to support the site, so we decided to monetize our knowledge. Our knowledge is a rare and precious commodity on the net. All the money we raise will go to support the community.
I think we are the first audience in the history of audiences (which I think is forever) to organize a conference to help developers make better content.
(I may be exaggerating - I'm sure there may have been some wealthy patrons who ran schools to improve the work of the artists who created things for them...but I'm fairly sure we are the first COMMUNITY to get together and do this. Let's hope it works. But, then we wouldn't do it if we weren't confident it will. )
Are we awesome or what?
