Bad PR? Just Saw This Posted on Kotaku

Seems that someone received a "mysterious" package that might be part of an ARG campaign launch. The only problem, she wasn't too pleased to receive it...

Weird ARG Mail Not Welcome

Edit. Just saw that the "she" is the blogger at Wonderland Blog. So if you want you can just go there to read her full post about the package...

Wow, interesting reading the comments. Maybe someone should point them to ARGN.com

Did Jamesi get one of those packets with secret documents?
Vanishing Point started with boxes mailed to MS & Mac bloggers.

Too bad this person doesn't have a sense of adventure. Probably doesn't like mysteries either.

Bag on the mail and toss it.

Oh, but first take lots of pictures and post them on the blog.

Then, make sure to do follow-ups to show that there was more to the story (And be sure to link to the contents and their solves in the blog).

Personally, I can emphasize with Alice.

There is no obligation as a blogger to respond positively to ARG trailheads, just as there is no obligation to review games positively. Thus, there's a burden on the developer to come up with something intriguing and aesthetically pleasing enough to warrant investigation.

How much of Alice's reaction do you think was due to the appearance and contents of the mailing? Admittedly, the developers invested in pre-paid SIM cards. But overall the stuff they got doesn't seem like it's very "mantle-worthy". And if you're not sending something you intend on the person keeping and/or cherishing, is it really worth using that technique?

But I need to get off my soapbox. Here's some information from the comments on Rock Paper Shotgun if people are interested in playing/checking out the page.

Alice posted an update, in case you didn't see it or click thru before, pointing to another blogger's reactions to receiving the same package.

again, read the comments, too.
