Pretty sure this is an ARG

Hello Mentor,

It has come to my attention that you have an interest in saving people, If this is so then I suggest taking a peek at www.mykindofthing.co.uk
Hope to see some participation

Sincerely

TCJ PM

I took a look at it and it seems pretty ARGish, especially the title. Somebody tell me I'm not just getting freak spam.

Ah, this looks really cool. It's going to be interesting to see all the other players try to come together, from this site and others.

Jason was chosen because of his lazy attitude, his laziness has now caused him to rethink his ways but there is only one way to show he is fit for the outside world. His life is in your hands. Only you the players can save him. I hope to discover more about Jason in the following weeks...that's if you can keep him that long.

Sounds a little Saw-ish?

I think these are the right answers (quick google+wiki searching). The question is: who sends the e-mail?

What about people from other communities? Perhaps somebody has already sent an e-mail...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(ROT14)3rd highest peak: Kangchenjunga
(ROT1)7th longest river: Ob river - Irtysh
(ROT8)how tall is the "spirit of houston": 555 feet
(ROT16)in which country do the petronas towers stand?: Malaysia

Edit- whoever sends it: don't be lazy, delete the ROT(number) in each question Wink

answers

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. this one someone will have to verify. i found the number two and three in different spots (2nd was listed as the 3rd on some sites, 3rd was listed as second) the two peaks are:

mount Kanchenjunga or Goodwin Austin

2. Huang Ho (Yellow River)

3. 555 feet

4. USA (Chicago, IL)

before this is submitted, we should verify the first one.

I believe you're wrong on the last one (not like Im some kind of pro at geography, but this is something I'm sure of!). Not sure about the first one or the second one...it seems that the criteria varies a lot when it's about rivers (for example: it's been an age-old debate as to which is longer: The Nile or The amazon River, or so I've taught). We'll just have to check more thoroughly...

Answers to these questions
Hmm

Donno how many of you remember me, but I'm that trivia guy you hate playing against at the bar.

The key to doing this kind of "one email only" challenge efficiently is to post references - and preferrably reputable ones, in multiple fashion - along with the critical data so that everyone can agree or disagree easily.

Allow me to show you what I mean with my own findings (respoilered for people). If you wish to challenge, post 2-3 equally reputable references so as a group it can be decided.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1) Kanchenjunga, in the Himalayas of India/Nepal (28,169ft/8,586m)
a) http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001771.html
b) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest_mountains
c) http://www.worldwildlife.org/news/displayPR.cfm?prID=313

2) A little controversy. From the Encyclopedia Brittanica:
The Ob proper is formed by the junction of the Biya and Katun rivers, in the foothills of the Siberian sector of the Altai, from which it has a course of 2,268 miles (3,650 km). If, however, the Irtysh River is regarded as part of the main course rather than as the Ob's major tributary, the maximum length, from the source of the Black (Chorny) Irtysh in China's sector of the Altai, is 3,362 miles (5,410 km), making the Ob the seventh longest river in the world.
a) http://www.britannica.com/ebc/article-9110532

If you believe Wikipedia, it is again the Ob - Irtyush (3,364mi)
b) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rivers_by_length

c) And here is the Ob again from the World Encyclopedia: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc.aspx?id=1O142:Ob

Yes, if you type in "seventh longest river in the world" you get everything from the Yellow to the Lena to the Zaire - but if you can find as many reputable sources, I'd be surprised.

3) 555 feet
a) http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/liberty/worldstatues/spirit/spirit.htm
b) http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/index.php?showtopic=3829
c) (ok, I can't find a reputable enough looking 3d one)

4) Malaysia
a) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronas_Twin_Towers
b) http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Petronas_Towers.html
c) http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/world/A0909775.html

I think I'm gonna hop along for the ride. This seems like it could be interesting.

I noticed something that may be of importance, or it could just be a typo...in this guy's blog there's only one entry dated "Tuesday, October 17" and today is actually tuesday the 16th. Why the difference in dates?

btw, I cast my vote for Sin Vraal mailing in the answers.

Go for it, Sin!

I'm sure a question like the airspeed velocity of an unladen sparrow would be no challenge for you
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
24mph

But, what is the most correct answer to the question, "What is the capitol of Assyria?"

My only concern with the river one is that we don't know how thorough the PM is.

I would make a guess that the PM used purplehell to get those questions in to ROT. There just so happens to be a "longest rivers" section on that site which is what makes me think that. In this case, purplehell lists the 7th longest river as the Huang He. (http://www.purplehell.com/riddletools/rivers.htm)

Do we think the PM is more likely to use a riddletools/arg-geared website for his/her answers or wikipedia? That's the million dollar question.

I really don't know.

Is that an African or European swallow?
