 Arthur Correspondance (Post-Scream, Nov. 1st)
Obs is an idiot and missed an email from Art 'cus it went to his spam folder that he doesn't check.

So I already explained this in chat and i'm not really one for living in the past (or more importantly, explaining how i screwed up), but this was hanging out in my Spam folder since the first, and i ran into it this evening looking for another email..

<sigh>

it's been a long couple weeks everybody. sorry.

I'd been emailing Peter trying to figure out what had happened to our man lydney, and where he was now. (i'm sure none of you are suprised by that.)

I guess on the 1st Art emailed me the following...

Quote:

What a fucking mess.

It isn't easy for me to admit that I made a mess of things, but I did. When the ATV rolled down that slope (Jeep Trail my ass!) I thought I was lucky to be alive. Then I realized there was no easy way to get back to where I was before, and I got completely lost after that. Every fucking mountain and tree and rock looks exactly the fucking same to me. By the time I decided to change direction and head to Cass, I was completed fubared. On top of creating a mess, I also might have botched up the real investigation Forsythe was doing in the area. If this was the military, I'd be peeling potatoes for a week.

I'm sorry I didn't contact you sooner, Obs. I was pissed at myself and sulking, but I was never in any danger from Peter. Do you really think I could work for that complete of an asshole for years? It isn't the mafia. To be honest, though, I never imagined that any of you guys left there at the Outpost cared about me at all. It felt to me like the last of my friends there were dead already.

Chokes me up a little bit to think I might have been wrong about that. Thanks for that, man.

I can only assume that Peter or one of his assistants will probably read every email I ever write now, but you deserve at least some kind of answer to your question, one that Peter won't get pissed about.

What do you learn from the corpse of a monster about turning monsters into corpses?

The answer to that one is simple, it sits beneath the crest of the Knights of Mars-Nodens: Bestia somes ostendo sum verum. I always assumed "Exu" was fingering me out when he said that, but I guess who I work for isn't as much of an issue in our relationship anymore.

ummmmm. It's I can't remember Latin anymore time!

Something like "the monster's corpse reveals the truth"?

Or not.

I always had trouble putting this kind of stuff together, so if someone wants to piece this info? Bestia is beast or animal. Somes means body, corpse, book, or treatise. ostendo sum means I was shown or I have been shown. verum means truth.

This is kind of half-assed on my part, but I'm going to go with it anyway. I haven't been able to put much time into this game; nothing more than just following along every now and then.

Early on, I remember reading about The Temple of Mars-Nodens, the River Severn, Lydney Park. It all tied back to the Pagan Goddess Brigid and a February feast. It's since morphed into St. Brigid's Day (Groundhog Day in the States) which is still celebrated today on the 1st of February.

Like I said, half-assed...but if someone wants to run with it the info is plentiful, easily found and seems to jibe with some of what's going on here.

Actually two 'holy days' -- St. Brigid's Day on the 1st and Candlemas on the 2nd. But I found the connection to hedgehogs to be of particular interest, as the Providence is the dog with the prickly back.

Groundhog Day was Imbolc, a pagan celebration associated with fertility and weather divination. Brigid, a Celtic fertility goddess, is strongly associated with Imbolc. The Romans transformed the pagan holidays into Christian equivalents, and Imbolc became St. Brigid's Day and Candlemas, the feast of Mary's purification.

February, is a time for purification (februa means "expiatory offerings"). Lupercalia, a pagan Roman purification ritual, took place in February. The Romans also had a rough equivalent to our Groundhog Day in early February -- only a hedgehog was in charge of the weather divination. These beliefs survived the Christianizing of Europe, attaching themselves to Candlemas Day as folklore. As Europeans settled in North America, the hedgehog was replaced with the native groundhog in the folklore.

That's great stuff Tipsila! I especially like the 'dog with the prickly back' connection.

Of course, we've seen the hedgehog at least twice before in the game:

The Hedgehog Review

And the original text of the Avesta Venidad .

EDIT: thinking about this in the context of the 'crest' of the Knights of Mars-Nodens: Bestia somes ostendo sum verum -- if "bestia" could mean 'beast' rather than 'monster' then this might be related to the other half of the torn pages from the original packages, from Kiss of the Beast.

Dante, dante, dante. Don't you know better than to go back to thinking about those packages? They can only cause pain and suffering.

Hey they PROMISED to wrap up 75% of the loose ends from Book 1 during Book 3. So I fully expect and demand 75% of the packages explained, dammit.
