[OOG] Spreading The Word On This Film
Concerning the general public...

I'm more of a lurker than a poster around here, but that is mostly because by the time I have anything valuable to say it has already been said. However, to the best of my knowledge, this is a new topic.

Apologies if this has been discussed and I missed it.

On to the actual POINT of this thread...over the past couple days, I have been trying to discuss this movie with friends/acquaintances. Of the twenty to thirty-odd people I've talked to, only TWO of them even knew what the hell I was talking about. So I pose this question to you all:

Do you think the marketing team has dropped the ball on keeping up the public-interest in this movie? How many people do you know (outside the web) that are even aware of this movie?

My parents are a good example; they went to Transformers with me on opening night and saw the now-infamous trailer and, being a family of cinephiles, were as anxious as I was to discuss our thoughts as soon as we walked out of the theater. However, months have passed and while I pay somewhat-regular attention to this ARE (I refuse to call this a "game", because it isn't), I mentioned to my dad that there might be a new trailer at Beowulf. He had little recollection of it, and I had to actually jog his memory of what 1-18-08 was.

I guess the point that I'm driving at is that Paramount/Bad Robot have done JUST enough to keep us interested (and barely that, I've seen several people claim to be "finished" with this until the movie comes out), but they have done absolutely nothing to generate interest among the general public aside from the initial trailer. Word-of-mouth is an exceptionally powerful marketing tool and I'm of the opinion that very few people are even aware of this movie's existence. So UF'ers...what's your take on this?

I can honestly say, as a fan of bad-good movies, I love 'Snakes On A Plane'. I know, I know...let the flaming begin.

But seriously; am I just grasping at straws here or are others in agreement with me?

For me, just by watching the trailer, I was instantly sucked in. Just the proposition of a all-new monster wreaking havoc in New York is a cool thought. Now, for people who haven't heard of this movie, well, i'm not surprised. How many trailers have there been (besides fake trailers and the upcoming one) for the movie? One. No trailers with any other movies except Transformers and Resident Evil (I'm assuming there was one, because I see it on Youtube all the time). People lost interest after they didn't see anything new from the movie, that is, until now. Because there will be people going to see Beowulf, then there will be a renewed interest for the movie. I think Cloverfield just needs time from now to the 18th of January to get good.

I enjoyed 'Snakes On A Plane', too... But, in this case, I'm trying to draw a paralell between what happened with that movie and what I think is going to happen with 1-18-08... big internet hype followed numbers that didn't live up to the hype; if you don't spend much time on the net you've probably never heard of it. It didn't work then, and I don't see it working now.

But, then again, if you set the bar low you're not as easily disappointed. Nobody was expecting Snakes On A Plane to be the next Citizen Kane... Everybody pretty much knew it was going to suck months before it even came out.

I think Snakes on a Plane was supposed to be something like Airplane crossed with I'm Gonna Get You Sucka and maybe a bit of Evolution. I think the whole point had to have been to become a campy movie phenomenon. I've never seen it, because there's campy and then there's just too gratingly lame to even bear.

I just think it's still a little early for hardcore promotion. It's going to be a big movie and big movies get promoted, no matter what. I heard about Bee Movie a LOOOOOOONG time ago and it just came out. We all just need to be patient. They are depending on word of mouth, and it's done fairly well as of now. Also I think all this history we know up to now really won't matter much in the movie. It will be more like we have an insiders look because we have followed the ARG. We might get more of the jokes or references, but I don't think it will be detremental to the plot. What about all the people that aren't following along, but still see the movie. I don't thing the JJ would take that away from them. We will get our full trailer and title when they want us to have it. Sit back and enjoy the ride. I am.

Yes, a lot of people don't know about the movie, but then again, the teaser before Transformers sucked in a lot of people. Just look at all the videos on youtube about it. And even if people have forgotten about it, in January, probably a lot of people will think "Hey, it's the movie of that cool trailer with no name I saw before Transformers! I might go see that..."

I kind of have a feeling that they've let it die down a bit, so when the trailer comes out, hopefully before Beowulf, maybe later this year, it'll seem bigger and come as more of a shock. I kind of see the Slusho.jp "happy talk" update as maybe a hint that they're becoming more active and something big is going to happen soon...

But, of course, that might just be wishful thinking Smile

I remember when war of the worlds was coming out... there was a trailer for it, showing no actual footage at all shown in like november when it opened the following summer. Then it all died out and hardcore promotion didnt begin until some weeks before the premiere. And it kinda flopped, didnt it?

I hope they do up the marketing on this, as ive stated before my excitement level with this is is HUGE, and saying to people theres this great movie the trailer goes blah blah blah! JJ Abrams, y'know the guy that does lost! and the response is " that sounds great whats it called?" and I have to go "UH! Dunno!"

Well, yes, it did flop, but that wasn't the promotion's fault: it SUCKED...

You know, these are all some good thoughts. I'm inclined to think that they didn't expect the trailer to get all the hype that it did and were really unprepared for the whole phenomenon. I think they evisioned it as a small, cheap project that didn't have especially high aspirations to greatness and were taken off guard by the response and (what used to be) pretty high fan expectations for a decent ARG and a kickass movie. Of course, that was partially their miscalculation for putting a cool, mysterious trailer in front of one of the biggest movies of the summer and thinking it would go unnoticed.

But, yes, for whatever reason, I think they dropped the ball. You can't buy the kind of hype that they got from the trailer, and they really should have found a way to sustain that until the movie came out. It's a huge missed opportunity, and if Paramount knew or cared, the should've fired someone over it. The other thing is that I'm guessing that the funding just wasn't initially planned for this sort of thing and even after the hype, Paramount/whoever wasn't willing to invest more money into this movie's advertising, maybe because it's a stinker or because its too weird/edgy to be mainstream (let's hope it's the latter). I also have to wonder if the lack of developments isn't a way of lowering our expectations a little bit, so that we aren't really disappointed when this comes out and it IS just a straightforward Godzilla knockoff.

All in all, everything they've done since the trailer has been pretty poorly executed and I have to admit, I'm really disappointed with the way they've handled this whole thing. This is compounded by the fact that almost everyone associated with this movie is forced to pretend it doesn't exist so we have NO idea what to expect. It would be so much better if they just said "Look, you're not getting an ARG, we're not updating the myspace pages anymore due to the writers strike, the next trailer will be Dec 9th, and we hope you'll still come see the movie." At this point, that would make me happier, since right know I feel like they're just jerking us around.

100% correct. I believe, however, that this movie is going to be a must-see. Paramount would know if they had a turkey on their hands and probably would be hyping it more than they are.
