It killed him...
I saw the trailer only in the very-low-quality version on youtube, but I've also read the Alex' description on Firstshowing.net http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/11/15/whatever-it-is-its-winning-jj-abrams-cloverfield-is-back/

He wrote: "There are some awesome, awesome shots that perfectly use that concept of the hand-held cameras, including a guy being killed and falling to the ground (you see his feet) and then it shows Rob running up picking up the camera."

So people, I think

it or they killed HUD (Hudson Platt). Because T.J.Miller (who plays HUD) said, he will be only shown for 2-3 minutes, because he is actually the cameraman.

He said: "You will probably see my face for possibly 3 minutes and twenty-five seconds. It's possibly the weirdest situation I've been in. But you'll hear me, and I'll be present in the movie for the entire duration of the film.
[...] I'm behind the camera and you're going to hear a lot more of me than you're going to see. And you can get that from the preview. In the preview you don't see me at all, you just hear me. It's going to be crazy. It's going to be everything the JJ Abrams fan wants out of a movie and probably more. "

 		definitely a possibility or maybe he was wounded, could be that he dropped the camera whilst be startled by the monster. and the few seconds you see him is when rob passes it back to him,

 		Oh, sorry people, it was already reported and discussed here... I'm belated, like often, hehe...

Anyway, it was pretty shocking for me, because this person is one of my favourites of "Cloverfield"...
