Lol
It's called cloverfield because in a field of clovers, there's one lucky one. I'm assuming the military will call this place cloverfield because chances are there's only one thing an an ocean of things that can destroy it.

Well we arent even sure if the Military is the ones who named it. Tagruato might be the ones. They did refer to Cloverfields before. I think they are working on a project, the bacteria or cultures grew too fast because of the properties of "Sea Bed Necter" They flushed the batch into the sea and it continued to grow
(This is HUGE speculation, I would give this a 10% chance of being true, Its just a hunch dont flame me, Im just brain storming here )

You might actually be on to something there Kraker...
The rest of that beginning text indicates that this incident is NOT isolated to New York..or even to the US. In fact, if we interpret literally, there are over 400 different areas in the US alone that have suffered from this "incident". Maybe the reason New York is designated "cloverfield" is because they managed to survive somehow. But then it specifies Central Park...which makes me think that the idea of clover being an excellent fodder comes in. Maybe the monster is somehow..like..growing food in Central Park? Like...the...
O_O
The secret ingredient.
!!!
Deep sea nectar. Wikipedia states that clover is a huge source of nectar for bees.
And the image on slusho.jp with the flavorbots, the lotus, it looks like a white clover!
I'm gonna go gather some pics.
Ok, I'm 100% certain that the secret Slusho ingredient is a form of clover.
slusho clover
clover
Which raises the question...what does that have to do with anything at all?
I have no clue.

I believe the US 447 comes from the US Census It's the only thing I've ever written here that I'd bet to be true! =)

I personally think it has to do with Census areas.

To me it literally called the area formally known as Central park "area 421" (or whatever the number is) What I take away from that is New York is divided into sections
This is common of a Chem/Biological attack on a base. The base is divided up into sections. that way we know what areas are clean/contaminated/being cleaned, so on and so forth.

shortened url Central Park, makes me think this might be a red herring.
Also, why designate it as "area formerly known as Central Park" if they're just using census areas as the designations?

Interesting spec...but the fact that census area 447 is in New York, but isn't Central Park, makes me think this might be a red herring.

Your mothra!
Just kidding, good point.
Somehow when I last read that title screen I interpreted it as:
Case Designate: Cloverfield
And that the incident originated at US 447 but the camera was found at Central Park.
NOW when I read it, I can no longer make the connection.

I'm trying to do some more thinking on my clover theory...
Somewhere deep on the ocean floor, a form of clover grows. A large herbivorous animal grazes on this clover, undisturbed.
Tagruato develops it's deep sea drilling equipment and discovers the underwater clover beds. They begin harvesting it because it's apparently freaking delicious. Monster gets mad...attacks a station...then moves on to New York...and then plants a farm in Central Park?
Ok yeah, things kinda fell apart at the end there. But I have a feeling this might be the key we're looking for...

There is a plant called a "sea clover" which I believe is found in the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe there is a connection?

Throwing in my crazy *checks pocket* eight cents here...
The monstery thing was dormant under a bed of seabed nectar plants, which look like clovers. Monster wakes up, groggy, doesn't bother to shake plants off. So it's stomping around NYC with some weirdass clover-like plants stuck to it. Someone sees it and is like "Whoa, a moving clover field!" Person is promptly squished/exploded/eaten/whatever. But the name sticks.
. . .
That's the best I can come up with after 3 days of no sleep (not related to the ARG, I just have a hard time sleeping. XD)

'Once in every thousand years
Spirits from out of the sea
Amid clusters of dark seaweed
Amid pebbles coloured green
Go planting and leave growing
Before daybreak and night's over
Go enchanting and leave growing
The sea clover the sea clover
Whoever finds it never dies
Whoever finds it never dies
Once in every thousand years
The nightingales sing strangely clear
Neither do they laugh nor weep
Just repeat just repeat
Once in every thousand years
Love comes to last eternally
Fortune may your fortune shine
And may you chance upon that time
And from the skies above
May it bring you love
Who will find and bring it to me
The sea clover the sea clover
Who will find and bring it to me
The sea clover the sea clover'
Huh.
