Read the Posting Guidelines at the top of the forum.
[SPEC] means your post & the thread is speculating about a topic.
[META] means a general overall discussion about the game/movie, not about any [PUZZLE] or any specific [WEBSITE] or [EMAIL].
Those are sample [TAGS]. Others might include [OOG] "out of game" meaning it's a nonsense post that really has nothing to do with the game or the movie. And [HUMOR] has also been used when people were passing the time between [UPDATES] or ran out of [INFO] to post.

the thing probably does drop eggs or little monsters but the eggs or babies probably look like a field of clovers did you ever see the movie gremlins when all the little cacoons were in that room its probably like that but looks like a field of clovers???? anyway i just wanted to also point out its probably pointless to try to figure out what the monster is cause didnt JJ say it was gonna be something never seen before so why would you be able to identify it even if you saw it. and also i was the first one who found that it ran behind the building just wanted to brag for a sec

*lurks*
let me take a crack at this.
Maybe this "creature" has barnacle like things on its back that resemble a field of clovers...which makes my skin kind of crawl.
Some barnacles are just nasty looking.
Well, off that tangent...
I have no idea, but I haven't been on the board in a while
and I'm actually becoming interested in the film again
now that there's an actual trailer and title.
"cloverfield" is probably the code
name the thing was given by the government.

I read somewhere that Yoshida, as in Ganu Yoshida (ceo Tagruato) translates literally as 'Lucky Field', perhaps more common usage 'Clover Field'.

My first thought was that "Cloverfield" was somehow related to the sea necter, that maybe the sea nectar is produced by clover-shaped plants on the ocean floor. No one will know for sure until the movie comes out.

Here's a strange theory. At the beginning of the trailer, they mention the area "formerly known as Central Park." I assumed that it was because the area was devastated, but suppose it was renamed before the attack?
Perhaps Tagruato purchased Central Park and renamed it Tagruato Park or something like that. This is not unprecedented since we have seen many stadiums and concert calls bought by corporations and then renamed after the company.
Then maybe Tagruato dedicates a section of the park to growing or storing Slusho's secret ingredient and they've nick-named it "Cloverfield" because either the ingredient is actually some species of sea clover, or it simply resembles a clover field.
This could then explain why the creature was attracted to NYC in the first place.

Maybe they called it cloverfield because JJ abrahms was behind the attack!

Early, early on (back in July) there was a discussion about how Cloverfield is the old name of an airport in Santa Monica that was very close to Bad Robot HQ. In fact, I think if you called one of the WHOIS info telephone numbers (for 1-18-08.com maybe?) it actually connected you to THAT airport's automated weather/flight pattern line. So it's entirely possible they just picked it at random by looking out the window as they were driving back from lunch at Chipotle, as an inside-joke codename. Or were hinting to us all along that it would be the name.

EDIT - here's a good summary: http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/07/09/we-have-the-answer-why-is-the-movie-codenamed-cloverfield/
Bad Robot address: 1219-1225 Olympic blvd santa monica CA 90404
Olympic Blvd. intersects with Cloverfield Blvd. nearby. Airport is also close. Put it into google maps & see for yourself.
That said, the way I interpret it is that there was a massive leveling of that entire area... its just decimated and wiped out and quarantined off b/c of the biological weapons used. A few years later, someone goes back to the site to check it out and life springs anew, there's a beautiful field of clover where all the ugly destruction was a few year ago. So now (a few years after destruction) it literally IS a cloverfield.

One theory I was thinking about…
What if "Cloverfield" is a name given to an algae bloom..stick with me…much like the names given to hurricanes.
I was on the website for The Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research (CSCOR) and read this
"Project Summary: Various noxious and toxic algal blooms afflict the Chesapeake Bay and other coastal U.S. waters, posing threats to human health and natural resources. The goal of this regional study is to develop and implement an operational system that will nowcast and forecast the likelihood of blooms of the three harmful algal bloom (HAB) species in Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries."
"Although these blooms occur naturally, water bodies enriched with plant nutrients from municipal, industrial or agricultural sources are more likely to have these growths."
Maybe Tagruato's drilling platform springs a leak and causes one of these blooms?
Now im not saying algae attacks New York…but it could be the reason for the name Cloverfield. Maybe he would be covered in the stuff like the swamp thing
Description
Could be described as a field of clover

The reason the code name is cloverfield is because production is being handled at a studio on Cloverfield street.

Clover could be tied in to the genetics of the creature/creatures...
The Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1968 went to Dr. Holley (among others) for his 'Clover Leaf' model of tRNA. If the monster somehow transfers its genetic material from itself to others (hence the smaller monsters)... one would expect it to be through transfer RNA... or tRNA. Shrug,... some more grist for the mill.

Well, of course that's the case, but we're talking about the reason they would give in the movie. If the story is any good at all, they would have to come up with an explanation for the name, regardless of what originally inspired it.
