[QUESTION][META]Why is HUD in all of these promo pictures?
Hasn't it been determined he is only doing a voice over?

From past leaked evidence and writings : the photographs at central park (where we see a pro cameraman shooting), some written evidence (I can't remember where, but I do remember reading about it) in regards to the movie being filmed professionally (so as to look "amateur" but not Blaire Witch head-ache inducing amateur), and the actor who plays HUD himself saying he won't be seen for most of the film...

... why is he holding a camera in all of these promotional shots?

I'm guessing that :

a) They would run through the scenes with HUD holding the camera before filming it with a professional camera man (to help give the actors a more solid reference for talking to "HUD")

b) To heighten the illusion of when the audience sees the movie after seeing the production stills, it'll seem more real (i.e they set up those shots with HUD actually in the scene just for publicity sake).

c) [highly spec] They will show the film from multiple "amateur", military?, and news camera? camera angles (as though the military had spliced together several related video tapes to get a more consistent view of what happen), thus HUD needs to be seen in some scenes.

Thoughts?

I think it is simply that the promo pictures are taken from a real third person perspective, whereas the movie is shot in HUD's first person perspective. Therefore, the promo shots depict the group as they would appear to a bystander, including HUD holding the camera (HUD is present in all the scenes, filming), to give the scenes a sense of realism, and a unique second perspective on HUD's journey.

Basically, I agree with your "b)".... I dont think your "c)" is right, and I'm not sure what you're implying with your a). Razz

This relates to another topic on here about why they might have 3 other people dressed as Hud in the call sheet. Hud is there in the publicity shots because yes, he's supposed to be the one filming most if not all of the movie. But there's more reasons.
When doing a walk through, dry run, or dress rehearsal you'd want the actors to understand that the person right there is supposed to be Hud. Same reason the professional cameraman would be dressed as Hud. TJ Miller still has to be there for the shoots of the scenes, because to best coordinate his dialog even IF he's not the one shooting he should be speaking his lines as the scene is going on. How else would you easily have him and all the other actors speaking their lines in the same timeframe, volume, tone of voice, etc? Sure saves on the dubbing later if they don't have to get crazy with the voiceover.
