[TRAILHEAD?] Idiocracy / Robocop

If you've seen the movie Idiocracy, you might remember a drink called Brawndo: The Thirst Mutilator. It is now a real product:

http://www.brawndo.com/

Look in the bottom left corner. See the logo for Omni Consumer Products?

That's the name of the evil corporation in the Robocop movies.

Click 'Buy Now' on the Brawndo site. Now scroll to the bottom of the page. There's a link to http://www.omniconsumerproductscorporation.com/

This site looks rather unreal to me, and contains nothing but info about their Brawndo prodcut. In fact, the whole site is nothing but an image:
http://www.omniconsumerproductscorporation.com/ocp_home.jpg

I have no idea what's going on here, but it's very strange.

The drink is really being produced by drinkredux.com the same people that made that cocaine drink. It appears that Fox is just licensing the product to the company.

I hope there is something more to it, but I doubt it.

Looks like the only link that works at http://www.omniconsumerproductscorporation.com/ is their contact link. I sent an e-mail off with my trusty spamcatcher address requesting further information about their product line...I'll let you know if I hear something back.

Strap Line?

Ive just had a look at the omni consumer products corporation piture site and ive noticed their strap line is the same as Brave New World's one, its

community. identity. stability.

Dont think this is any help tho...

I did find these tho:
http://www.ocpi.ca/
http://www.ocp.org.uk/index.htm
do these look OOG to you?

Edit: Added more info.

Whois Info

Omni Consumer's website is registered through GoDaddy in December 06 using a privacy proxy, but it's hosted on:
NS1.MEDIATEMPLE.NET
NS2.MEDIATEMPLE.NET
IP Address: 64.13.232.101

Brawndo.com is also registered through GoDaddy in January 07 using a privacy proxy, hosted on:
NS5.WEBCONTROLCENTER.COM
NS6.WEBCONTROLCENTER.COM
IP Adderss: 67.199.22.78

The UK website seems like someone's actual, copyright infringing corporation and totally unaffiliated. The Canadian site calls itself "incorporated," not "corporation," so it's also probably OOG*.

*if there is a game. Or even a viral marketing campaign.

ETA: Man, we already are living in Idiocracy and that's depressing. Not only was the movie pulled because people didn't realize it was a satire, but now they're marketing the main product... We need this. Fast.

I e-mailed OCP asking them for more info about their company. Here's what I got back:

Quote:
Thanks for your email. We're in the middle of a site redesign right now, but we should have a more robust information set available towards the end of the week. Althrough there does appear to be some skepticism regarding the status of our product line(s) at the moment, I can assure you that everything is completely above board, and we're quite proud in having come to an agreement with 20th Century Fox which has allowed us to bring Brawndo: The Thirst Mutilator to market (working with Redux Beverages for distribution and general beverage expertise).

In addition, we're quite pleased with the additional level of interest that we are able to provide in support of Mike Judge's creative work, as I'm sure we can both agree that he deserves it.

Best Regards,
Pete Hottelet
Omni Consumer Products

I guess it's a legit company? But Brawndo is really being manufactured by a company called Redux Beverages, LLC. So why create this shell of OCP?

It's all very strange.

Redux Beverages calls itself an LLC. LLC's have different tax and legal liabilities than incorporated companies. Could be a subsidiary or a partner rather than just a division; a corporate division only has internal organizational implications. For tax and legal purposes divisions are the same as the company.

If you're curious, send another email asking about the corporate structure, nature of the partnership, and state/municipality where Omni is incorporated. If Omni is a real company, we can verify its existence through public records.

I'm going to check the Way Back Machine for older versions of the website.

ETA: Archive isn't updated for 06/07 yet.

I got another e-mail back from OCP, which answers my question about why they chose the OCP name:

Quote:
With regards to the name, the best description I could give you is the one pulled from the Scientific American blog about OCP/Brawndo: "Moebius-like-referential pop-culture-as-reality mocketing contortionism".

He goes on to describe their relationship with Redux. Essentially OCP are the idea and licensing people, and Redux does the manufacturing.

So I think we can pretty safely say this is not a trailhead. Just a legitimate business! I am pretty impressed at their responsiveness and putting up with me.

Heh, since they're marketers: not really. They'll take that feedback...back...to Redux and go "look, it's working! The Tubes say so!"

It's so old it's new! Word-of-mouth. Very Happy
