[OPIN] Broderick Godzilla vs. Cloverfield. Ok, I see that the Broderick Godzilla movie really gets slammed alot here. I think people don't see the movie for what it was. A campy monster movie with humor and cool special effects which is really a huge throwback to the original black and white Godzilla movies. Do you really think those movies were made to scare and frighten? No, I think they were strictly made to entertain with some humor and cool special effects for the day.
This monster what ever it turns out to be, I think is going to be much more along the line of shock and awe. I think it will be a dark film with not much, if any humor in it at all. And i hope to God it's rated R. Campy and funny, go with PG or PG-13. Scary and shocking and believable, has to be an r rating.
I enjoyed the Broderick Godzilla movie for what it was.
Eh, my two cents.

I enjoyed the Godzilla movie I saw it twice once as a youth when it first came out and now as a film maker and I enjoyed it, I'm a monster movie buff so I enjoy anything with a big guy breaking things. My only problem with it is that there were a few things they couldn't decide the film seemed unfinished in the script phase, they tried to make Godzilla really seem terrifying but then they gave him sympathy which didn't work, so idk I liked it for what it was
but I think this will be a lot better in many respects, and it has to be R, if not I may cry as it will seem reigned in

That movie doesn't only get bashed on here, it's been hated since before it was released. GINO was an okay movie, but it wasn't a Godzilla movie. Toho hated it, and later on killed the creature in that movie (official named Zilla by Toho) in Godzilla: Final War. Trying to "Americanize" a creature that was originally a represented the US just didn't seem to work.
I do enjoy watching the movie, it's pretty funny, but it's just not a Godzilla movie.
my $0.02
I also very much enjoy Rage Against the Machine's song "No Shelter" being on the soundtrack, which talks about selling-out and "Americanizing".

Broderick-Zilla would've been a great american monster movie...
if the title wasn't Godzilla.

godzilla had my seal of approval. It had the tension and action to make it a gr8 film. I could watch it again. Might do now as a matter of fact.
Cloverfield is a total different kettle of fish though. Mostly focusing on how it affects the ppl and the damage it has on the city.

Brod-zilla Being a huge fan of Godzilla/monster movies in general, I was hugely disappointed by the '98 "Godzilla." I was about 10-11 when it came out, and I didn't even like it then (yes, I've seen it again since then).
The first scene where Godzilla strolls through New York is pretty cool, I did like that part. But, other than that, the movie really seems to hold back from being a "real" monster movie, i.e. no real monster combat (he always runs away when fired at, the guys with the guns never really use them against the babies--taken out of context, that last part might not sound right ), too much focus on the characters (when the monster is the main--really the only--draw, you gotta give the audience what they want), uninteresting monster design (that jaw of his... ), etc. Then there was the terrible CGI.
Granted, many of the real Godzilla movies are worse, but for being America's way of showing the Japanese that we can make good monster-rampaging-through-the-city movies, too, it failed.
All that said, "Cloverfield" (still not convinced that's the actual title) looks to kick-ass! This is one case where I actually wouldn't mind if we don't see much of the monster because it looks like the movie will be more about the experience of living through its attack, rather than just showing us a monster tossing school buses around.

One more thing: No offense intended, motrbotr, but the original (Japanese-version of) Godzilla was a serious drama, and not so much even a monster movie, but more like a movie where a monster plays a part in the story rather than being the focus.
The fact that I really liked it might seem to contradict what I said about Brod-zilla's focusing too much on characters being a bad thing, but in this case the movie is trying to be more than just a monster movie, unlike Brod-zilla, which does not (not that that's a bad thing).
Many of the sequels, though, really are almost entirely intended as comedies or kids' movies (Godzilla's Revenge, aka All Monsters Attack, is so kid-oriented it's not even funny).

A little off topic so I apologize, but I really hope the American ratings system doesn't screw up the movie for the rest of us. You guys really need something more like a PG15 instead of PG13. It's too great a jump from PG13 to R.
Back O/T, I really liked the first 20 minutes or so of Brodzilla, and I liked the tie in with the French, but then it went sort of 'cutsey' Too much love story, too much Broderick humour.

I think that's a pretty good idea actually. There is a huge gap between PG13 and R (NC17 doesn't really matter because it's pretty much reserved for worthless gore flicks), a PG15 rating would help.

Yeah The American Godzilla movie was cool, if it wasnt Godzilla. I enjoy the original Godzilla movies (Japan version of course) because even with the cheesy effects, it was always fun to watch.
