OK, a couple things here...

First off, mad props to all of you who have painstakingly cropped, slowed down/sped up, modified, gif'ed and otherwise made this thing easier to see. Great job.

Second off, observations-
My initial thought when seeing this was similar to some of the other recent posts here, that we first see the creature's left leg bending, then as it moves forward, we see some groin area, then as the shot ends we see it's right leg coming forward through the lower portion of the building on the right. It would appear that the head of the creature is visible near the beginning of the shot before it goes beind the building on the right, and maybe we catch a glimpse of it's right arm as it's passing between the buildings from the left to the right. I kind of think that the head looks like a shark head or whale head looking upwards toward the top of the building on the right, with a small eye on the side and a long narrow mouth like a whale or shark.

With all that said, though, I showed one of the fullscreen gifs to a guy I work with here. He's not into the movie and hasn't followed it any more than me hollering at him that it's gonna be the coolest movie evar. His take on it was the we are seeing the creature's right leg at first, and are looking at the creature's back as it moves from left to right. The second "leg" as I'm calling it is actually the creature's tail coming into view as it turns away from us and to it's left. Also, we never get to see the creature's head. He thinks we are looking at it's back and the true size of the thing is much greater than we can tell from that shot. And he thinks that we are looking at a "shell-like" thing on it's back.

I'm not sure which opinion I like better, but I see both "creatures" in the shot now, so I could be convinced either way.

Opinions, clarifications?

Oh yeah, forgot something.

In the trailer just before we see the monster, the soldiers are shooting UP at the thing. Can anyone figure out how high they are shooting? Maybe not the soldiers, but the tank/hummer things? May be able to tell if we're seeing a back or a head of the monster - I would think that they would shoot at it's head and not it's mid-section, no?

just a thought...

Maybe it's a giant poisonous Jellyfish... hence the red spine and the girl's violent death.

It looks like

It looks like a dinosaur with a cuttlefish head. Look closely as it turns to the building, you can see what looks like tentacles hanging down from the face like wet mop strands. YUCK!

you know, this is my first post but I've been on here lurking around like a Pedophile waiting to be caught by Chris Hansen(wait did I just call myslef a pedophile....)

But I've been looking at all the pictures, GIfs, trailers, clips for the past 24 to 48 hours and I think it's either a insect or dinosaur like creature and I've got a weird feeling just kinda looking at it....what if it is kinda like a lion type monster lol

Not saying that it is, but the coloring and rough appearance looks to be inspired by Broderick-Zilla. Another nod to Godzilla in general would be the lice/larvae/ittybittymonsters. In Godzilla 1985, there is a scene with mutated sea lice (from Big Daddy G).

Again, not saying this is Godzilla, but seeing how JJ gets happy from thinking about Godzilla and how he wanted to have an american iconic monster (other than King Kong, I guess) he's probably going to be drawing heavily from G-Lore.

I am just sad that the monster isn't John Tesh.

Please read my post here about embedding mahoosive pics and duplicates and fancy, but massive animated gifs. We'll only hook 'em out and turn them to links. Attaching is better for the forum if you really want a little preview Smile

Edit - added strange missing word - MikeyJ

At the risk of sounding like I'm harping on the same subject....go to Wikipedia and look up Isopod. It has the shape and shell-like structure of a turtle shell. That could explain the shape of the damaged buildings in the poster. Also, they can rear up almost like a centipede and with the larger front claws, could easily have done the damage higher up on the buildings. Another note of interest about these ugly little critters....quite a few are able to live out of water just as easily as in the water....creepy...lol

CGI

I know everyone is trying to figure out what the monster is, what it looks like, etc...

Are we all so focused on seeing shapes in smoke, wondering why it appears to glide, bipedal vs. multipedal, etc... that we're missing a very obvious conclusion that could be drawn???

The CGI of the monster isn't finished or is relatively poor at this point, hence the appearance of gliding?

If the project is truly "lower" budget, and is being released in January (the graveyard of non-artsy motion picture studio releases), then perhaps the CGI department has a limited budget and thus some of the shots are deliberately blurred or shaky cam'd to hide the inadequacies. Thus, when we slow down and go over and over and over on a small segment, we're going to notice these deficiencies and outthink ourselves.

It seriously looks 'Zilla-esque and bipedal to me, and my wife thought the same just looking at it once. As for any other aspect- aquatic breathing, spawn, etc...let's just remember that we are glimpsing into the realm of one man's imagination, the man who gave us living smoke, polar bears, the Others, and much more. Anything is possible.

If you focus too hard on the details, you miss the big picture.

for some reason the monster reminds me of a warrior alien from the movie, well Alien or Aliens, lol. I watch way to many sci-fi movies.

The first time i saw the HD version of the new trailer , it was driving me crazy trying to figure out where id seen that head shape before. Then i was going through my dvd's and saw my copy of Aliens and it hit me, thats where id seen it before. But im not sure if thats one head or two. Maybe we are seeing a hydra or somthing along those lines. It would make all the double letter clues fall into place too. 2 letters = 2 heads
