[SPEC] Who so few people left in the city?
It _is_ NYC for pete's sake!

Sure, there are a few scenes with hordes of people running, standing near the bridge... but for the most part we see a bunch of scenes with the main characters in desolation.

I'm guessing this might have to do with Rob's insisting on going back to the center of the city that apparently dangerous for some reason.

So, obviously they were running away from what was happening along with everyone else, then because of Rob decide to head back in the other direction to find Beth (I think it was Beth).

Still. How fast would people really be able to vacate the city in such a way that when Rob and then turn back around, there is no one (or hardly anyone) around anymore.

I just find it strange that it got so desolate so quickly. Maybe I'm spoiled by other movies like Batman Begins and Resident Evil where there were people everywhere running around like crazy (then again they were trapped in those movies)...

... but still, it's just so eerie for the city to be so empty and quiet during some of those scenes.

Makes me wonder just what the hell is going on.

God... January won't come soon enough. My birthday is on the 15th and I'm more excited about this movie than that! Crying or Very sad

Vacated is one thing, but they'd certainly be hiding -- or at least, by the later parts of the attack, herded by the military into "safe zones." I don't think it's implausible that the city would seem pretty bare in the wake of all this.

Safe zones and hiding makes sense to me.

I was just having a hard time imagining a full scale evacuation with out cars and people backed up for blocks, as well as the ambient noise of people fleeing for their lives even in the distance.

Will have to wait and see I guess. Embarassed

Maybe lots of people are hiding in the subway tunnels? Or, if there is a biohazard, maybe they've been ordered to stay inside?

Sounds plausible to me. Gotta say, this toxic bio stuff seems more interesting to me at the moment than the monster itself. Hope it's true, because it adds a serious extra layer of horror to the film. (Not to mention, it gives the film a chance to be scary even when the monster isn't 20 feet away.)

As for the scene with the horse, that's Central Park proper I believe, and if the trailer is to be believed, that's where the serious stuff goes down. If any area of NYC was going to be totally empty, it'd be Central Park.

Agreed. The fact that someone even decided to wear a biohazard suit is VERY intriguing... They wouldnt use those unless the felt they were needed, so WHY do they need em?

JJ & Co. did a good job of picking out scenes to put in the trailers... enough for us to try and speculate from, but at the same time tell us almost nothing.

If a monster attacked NYC when I was there, I'd just hide in some alleyway under some rubble or something. That's probably what most people are doing: hiding.

Yep! that sounds very reasonable, FEMA or whoever would be handling the crisis would have alerted people

I don't know. All I remember from news footage of 9-11 was people walking slowly on foot out of the city. Emergency services had extenuating circumstances I know, but it did not seem to be an orderly evacuation to me.

Maybe it is a red herring ending, or maybe everyone has managed to leave that area.

Just my 2c, please no NY'ers or Americans take offence Smile

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I dont think any one would take offence, it was a horrific day! and i dare say that a lot of the people you mention were in shock as was most of the world! and that could explain why a lot of people were walking as opposed to running!

Shock would do it all right, but what I meant was if people felt ok to walk that day, maybe as long as they couldn't see the monster they would fell ok to walk also, thus taking longer to evac than the timeline of the movie.

Gahh... it's early in the am here, I'm making no sense and arguing with myself. G'night Laughing

If I was in New York when a freaking huge... THING... attacks the city... I would follow a very basic instinct we all have.

Heres the thought process.

Hmm... Big dangerous thing in the middle of the city that wants to eat me... I think im going anywhere that leads to where the monster ISNT. *begins running the completely opposite direction of wherever the creature is, and occasionally switches it up incase it runs my way.*

Maybe they're running back into the city to look for someone.

Luckily, I don't live in a big city; so risk of physically-impossible-huge- monster-attack is very low.... I'm more likely to deal with erupting volcanoes, floods, lahars, or racoon attacks instead. Oh, and maybe Bigfoot. This is his stomping grounds.
