[META] Please read - Posting pics and multiple discussions
No more dupes

Guys when you're thinking of posting another screen cap of the trailer or teaser (or a random pic of the monster/a crab/something that washed up on the beach that you thought looked scary), please try and host it elsewhere (imageshack seems popular and there's always flickr) and simply provide the link. It makes things difficult for those with slower connections with multiple high-def images embedded in a thread. I'm going to go through and replace with links as far as possible. The attached pics are less of a bother as you just a get a little preview.

Similarly when quoting, don't include the image in the quote, it just results in unnecessary duplicates.

Also, discussion at the moment is very fragmented and there's a lot of duplication of information - if you think of something interesting about the trailer, then there is already a thread that you can post in and I'll direct people to that thread. There should be no need for new threads pertaining to the trailer.

You lot don't need locky - cute though he is. You're better than that Wink (I reserve the right to be contradicted by other mods and for everything to be locked tighter than a frogs bum-hole). Though I need dinner and medication before I tackle the hi def and important images threads Drool

So is attaching OK then?
Image hosting sites have the risk of an image being even lightly contested and summarily removed without any real debate of fair use. I would think SpaceBass would probably defend the use a bit if it's warranted, whereas the image hosting sites rarely give it a second thought.

I'm proud to say I've been doing that for a good while. Very Happy

I just noticed in another thread where I posted some pix using an outside host that it had been edited down to links.

So we can't even use the img tag when hosting off site?

I thought that was exactly the reason for hosting off site was that it didn't effect band width, even when using the img tags.... Confused

Also, kind of makes discussion a little confusing when you have to click a link (or bunch of links) to see what someone is referring to.

Once again, how is it that img tagged pix hosted off site effect forum speed?

If the image is very wide then it does weird things to the window viewer and still slow to load the uF page for dialup users. Doesn't matter who is hosting it.

We've seen the same image posted multiple times in multiple threads. Sometimes attached, sometimes hosted other places.

We're hoping this helps condense the discussions to a more manageable and viewable form. So we don't have to keep repeating ourselves. And make it more likely that new folks will actually read through all that has been previously posted (recently) rather than starting "I don't know if anyone has noticed but at 1:22....." type new threads over and over again.

Yes, it's really only the very large pics that matter. Attaching them here helps because the forum automatically thumbnails them. A lot of image hosting services also provide thumbnailing, which would be preferable to use for an inline image, perhaps with a link to the full version off-site. It also might be helpful for thread authors to edit their titles or subtitles to point out when large sets of images reside within, for the benefit of those bandwidth-impaired users who'd like a little warning before opening a pic-heavy thread.

That would be great for those of us who do not live in the bandwidth heaven of North America Smile

Edit: grammar

Sorry for abandoning this part way through, my intention was to change as many of the ginormous images embedded with /img to /url links as possible. Along the way I also did some of the smaller ones to keep things consistent. Thanks SpaceBass and Kona for clarifying Smile

Iconsumer, I agree that clicking a load of links can be a pain. Attachments and thumbnails are the way to go. Also many of the images had been posted multiple times in multiple threads (I can now draw from memory the bursty chest silhouette one and the green monster legs one) hence my suggestion that the key images could be archived on the wiki and referenced there.
