[SPEC] Realistic causes for expanding body like in trailer? What could cause such an extreme thing to happen in RL
Who ever it is aside.
It seems clear her mid section is expanding while her arms and head appear unaffected.
Is there any foundation in reality for something like this to occur in a human body?

Opening a jacket or sweater (but she wasn't wearing one, was she?)

Head looks like it's changing.

Maybe she's fat and turned.
I said in another thread that it could be somebody moving closer to/farther from the light source.
Perhaps somebody is blowing up a balloon. "I, for one, welcome our monsterous overlords!"
But seriously, it's either she really is "blowing up" or something is odd with the lighting causing that image to happen.

In the pictures from blackbook, and also in the trailer it looked like to me that she had some sort of jacket or shirt on, could be opening the jacket to show them her wounds better?

I'm more inclined to agree that something *is* happening to the body behind the sheet, or else why put it in the trailer?
Also, at the end of that little clip it looks like the expanding person (don't know whether it's male or female; not entirely convinced that it's Marlena behind the curtain yet) is wearing an army helmet with a dangling chinstrap...so it *could* be a soldier going through "The Change" instead.

This thread is about assuming that her body is indeed expanding.
Once again, with that assumption, what would be a realistic cause for her body to expand rapidly like that?
Has there ever been documented evidence of such a thing occurring in real life?
I know I've seen a MythBusters episode where they disproved pop rocks and cola or mento's and cola in making you explode.
Obviously it'd take something pretty drastic. I'm just thinking if we can "expand" (har har) on the idea of what could make her blow up like that, maybe we'll be closer to figuring out what the hell is going on.

The only example I know of for a body to burst in anything like a short time is from putrefaction. This doesn't usually happen when you are alive, unless you suffer something like peritonitis. This is what happened to King William the 1st - hence my reference in another thread. He was thrown forward on his horse in France and landed on the saddle horn, pressing in on his abdomen so hard it ruptured his intestines inside. The leakage from his intestines caused the peritonitis, and after several days of this agony he died. Some time passed before his funeral and the putrefaction got worse, especially because he'd become fatter in his later years. At the funeral various causes are cited but it is pretty well established that his corpse was caused to burst and spill the putrefaction, driving those in attendance out of the building. In the most graphic portrayal (largely considered apocryphal) a fire broke out in the alter area from the candles, and the heat caused his body to explode - spraying the onlookers with the putrefaction.
Enjoy your cream of mushroom soup.
Oh, and try this:
1. Watch the scene of her 'exploding'
2. Move the slider back to where the scene begins
3. Resume playback
4. Close your eyes and listen

Some severe allergies to certain animal poison could make someone swell several sizes. But it'd take hours.
So maybe she was stung by a slusho mutated gigant bee.

well.. i have some expertise in medicine and science and I'm pretty certain there is nothing known to medical science that can cause a human being to swell up in the apparent proportions show in the trailer.. much less as rapidly as this appears to happen..
there is not enough solid volume compacted within the thorax and abdomen to expand to this size if released.. it would either have to be some sort of parasite growing inside of her quite rapidly (hookworms and a variety of other parasites grow to enormous sizes inside the body.. but not like this, not anything like this)... echinococcus is a tapeworm that on a small scale is similar to this.. after ingestion, it causes growth of what is called a hydatid cyst (an often large "ball" of worm larvae) that will eventually rupture (resulting in anaphylactic shock, and death) - however this rupture is quite dissimilar in that the swelling and the "explosion" is entirely internal..
my guess.. she has some sort of (A) fictional parasitic infection that reproduces similar to echinococcus, but much more quickly (a la the movie Slither) and her body turns into a larvae filled cyst which explodes or (B) even less realistic, a bacterial infection (from the deep sea ingredient, Slusho?, whatever Jamie has) that is lying dormant is activated.. and it begins to release a gaseous byproduct (gaseous expansion is the only thing I can think of that could cause that rapid of an increase and since bacterial infections are on an exponential scale... perhaps exponential gas volume expansion)
edit: btw.. none of this would likely result in the orifice bleeding that we are seeing in the trailer.. that is much more indicative of an extreme viral hemorrhagic fever (ebola, marburg, dengue).. but it is movie science, after all

It looks like to me that the guy to her right is hitting or possibly puncturing her with something just as she starts to swell. like injecting her with presurrized air. It make no sense to me i know. But it looks just as she starts to swell, that he moves his right arm towards her very forcefully as if to hit her or grab her hard or inject or stab. Its a swift movement.

And you have to see it in the trailer, the above clips really dont show it.

I agree. I see the same thing.

its clearly a dummy (stiff neck, hair bouncing around like a dummy's) so something tells me they wouldnt use a dummy to illustrate a jacket being opened. so they want us to take note of a fatal occurance. the sound is just sickening as well, squishy and violent. i myself see wings coming out. definitely i think its a hatching of sorts rather than a transformation. shes a host for growth not for symbiosis. these things will be far larger than humans. they'll grow rapidly and learn to fly after a few fumbling attempts. stamp it im calling that.

At first I was all about the exploding theory, but rather than looking at the girl...let's first look at the guys in the hazmat suits. There doesn't seem to be any reaction by them that would suggest something so grotesque as a person exploding in their arms. Personally, I'd freak out if that happened and I'd bet that just about everyone in the world would have the same response if something so unnatural happened in front of them. Combine that with the behavior of the people in front of the curtain and i think we can rule out the explosion theory. We also don't see anything flying from the body. Likewise, expansion is unlikely as well. If your body expanded and contracted at that rate, I would imagine the pain would be excruciating...so much so that your body would collapse instantly.
The more I look at the footage, I want to throw a new theory into the mix, the girl expands and contracts because air from a fan/gust of wind blows up her shirt causing the rapid expansion/contraction. If you look at the girls hair, you can see the hair fly up and down. I don't think all of the hair movement is caused by the hazmat guys.
