This is supposed to be taken from a miniDV cassette in Hud's camera. Figuring it's probably on one tape (unless he's got a spare in his pocket or the bag stays with him - not so likely), the largest tapes I can find are 180 minutes, with more common ones being 60 and 120 minutes. The footage appears to be partial and broken. Figuring he probably wanted as long a tape as he thought he might reasonably need I figure it had to be at least a 120 minute cassette. Even if it's the 180 minute tape, when you take out the lost footage and that the camera is almost certainly not going to have been running 100% of the time, I would guess there's under 2 hrs of footage. A movie that's an hour and a half isn't really all that long, so I'd go more for 1:45 min. running time.

Just my guess.

From discussion a great while back, the camera he appears to be using is a Panasonic HDC-SD1. This records directly to SDHC cards. Figures for recording are around 4GB per hour, but this is highly dependent on the recording quality chosen. The camera ships with a 4GB SDHC card. The largest cards available right now are 8GB I believe, but 16GB and 32GB cards have been announced. By the numbers above and assuming a 32GB card was available by January, 8 hours of shooting is possible but power becomes the issue.

Of course this is Hollywood and none of that matters. Smile

Funny, but based on your image in this post I gathered you thought it was a Sony DCR-VX2100. I based my calculations on the media that device uses.
Confused
The Panasonic you refer to now might not be precisely the one shown, as it has a DVD recording brother, the Panasonic HDC-DX1. The camera you see Hud holding (and upon which that speculation is based) could be either model, so the recording capacity could be different yet again.

Sorry for the confusion. Embarassed
The VX2100 came up to point out that TJ was holding a pro camera (not the Panasonic one he uses in the movie) in one of the production stills. I was using a 2100 recently, so I could easily find a picture of the lens hood to show what to look for in that image.

EDIT: regardless, your calculations are accurate and plausible. Give him a larger 8GB card or record on lower quality and your esimates still hold.
