Numb3rs Does ARGs Friday November 9th Via Mysdirection.com , next Friday's episode of Numb3rs will (nominally) be about ARGs. According to the promo:
Quote:
Friday: On Numb3rs, Don and the team investigate the world of obsessive video gamers after a man plunges to his death while participating in an alternate-reality game. Amita's hidden gaming ability becomes the key to tracking down the killer
The big questions to ponder: will the show's depiction of an ARG mesh with ours? Will it introduce an extended reality / ARG of its own like the CSI / Second Life game that's ongoing? Will the weekly math lesson on the show have something to do with the small world phenomenon? Will we ever find Satoshi?
I love this show if only for its weekly math "lessons".

"Video gamer" and ARG. Totally different. Jeesh.

Ah, but the death by plunging was while participating in an alternate reality game -- extreme deaddrop, mayhaps? (oh that's right, I so went there)

Note to PMs: putting clues on rooftop ledges = potential bad idea.

That is exactly what I was thinking. DEAD DROP FOR REALZ!
I'll be tuning in out of curiosity.

The website now describes the episode as:
Quote:
Don and the team investigate the secret world of alternate reality games after a man plunges to his death while participating in one such game. Amita's life is in danger when her hidden gaming ability becomes the key to tracking down the killer. DJ Qualls guest stars. TVPG-L
"secret world" of alternate reality games?
Who's been holding out on me? Where is this secret world?
I can't find a link to a preview of this show, but maybe someone can find one?

And while the preview makes it look like a MMORPG that's just being called an ARG to sound edgier, I'm still holding out hope.
SpoilerFix description
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When a man that worked for the Department of Justice dies from falling off a roof, the team follows a trail to an online game called Primacy, which has an "Alternate Reality" (or real life) side as well. They question a 67-year-old female game player about being up on the same roof. They also question a leather-wearing biker and an Asian business woman. Amita and Larry help with the investigation and Amita is threatened because of her involvement with the game.

So, what are you hoping for? That it's an MMORPG or that it's an ARG?
Cause I'm hoping that the President decides he needs to address the nation that night. It's the only thing I can think of that will send everyone running from their TV.
Please, enlighten me. What's so great or exciting about an OMG! Alternate Reality Game kills one and threatens another plot? Is it that once your genre of gaming is the one being used by the media in a sensationalist games are teh evil way, it's a sign you've really made it?

When are we going to see the positive side of playing ARG?
So far we have gotten murder, kidnapping, and extortion in the past year (thanks CSI:NY and L&O).
Hey, we've saved the world a couple of times and that's the thanks we get?

I'm interested in how the media is using the term alternate reality game. I'm also curious at how the players of games are being portrayed. There is the typical nerd portrayal which seems to be moving into a more sinister portrayal = but admittedly this is based on a tiny, tiny sample size. I don't watch much TV and there aren't that many shows that deal with games.
I want to see a show that shows players helping each other out.
PS. I'm developing this theory that old media (ie TV) is confused and threatened by "new" media (ie games on the internet) and that attitude infects the way new media people are portrayed.

The exciting thing for me is what "sexy" math theory they trot out during the episode -- and which type of game they focus on will influence which pet theory they highlight. last week's Wolfram on Numb3rs , for instance, had a nice little description of steganography and image cleaning to go along with a CART analysis.
They generally make the math fairly accessible on the site, so I'd like to see what math they find "relevant" for ARGs in particular, not just online games.

New Media are totally evil ! It's always been the same - cinema felt threatened by the arrival of TV, for example. One day the internet and ARGs will be mainstream enough that TV won't be scared of them any more.

That reminds me of the Beast for some reason. Or... something. There was something where the game was supposed to end with the character almost jumping off a roof and everyone he knew was part of the game.
I don't remember what it was..
