META- the Florida weather might account for this.

Surfzoned: [META] Just to try to keep the METAs straight - not easy, but sort of interesting - you tagged your thought about the Florida weather as META because that is where the document was probably made in real life since Djinn Productions is located in Tampa, right? Because IG I get the impression that Shannon and the Library and the OC:0702 document are currently in Europe someplace.

I think Surfzoned was kidding about that, but it raises a question that I've been wondering about since I realized that Jade Macalla is a real person. Does anyone know the real relationship between the character and the person? I've been going through Jade Macalla's deviantART account and he sounds a lot like the character. Is David Valley making fun of him in the stories?

=)

Now I'm getting confused.
Jade is either a sword wielding Faerie
    or
another creative and talented mind at Djinn Productions and all around good guy
    or
he's an augmented HUMINT gatherer covertly spying on some mysterious government agency
    or
he is the owner of a bar that likes producing short films about film production.

He might be all of these!

Video from Jade and Whitechapel

According to Ethan's personal blog (http://ethangrant.wordpress.com/2007/12/25/merry-christmas/) he went home for Christmas. In that post he also linked to an advertisement that WF appears to have made for OC, specifically 0702. There are some images in the ad that I think are from the alchemy book that 0702 was found in - no idea yet if they might be clues of some kind.

I searched on www.blip.tv to see if there were any other ads or videos and I found a page that Jade Macalla created. http://blip.tv/file/555678/ - looks like he's going to use that page to host video that he shoots for Whitechapel. He doesn't say much, but there is a song playing in the background (looks like he shot the "test video" on a web cam), does anyone know what song that is?

The song is Into the West by Annie Lennox from the soundtrack to Lord Of the Rings.

Clue or coincidence?

dashcat wrote:

Thanks, dashcat! I can't believe I don't remember that song at all. I'm pretty sure it's clue for something though, because as soon as I saw your post it clicked with something I saw at the WF site.

I didn't realize until this morning that there is now a supplemental page for OC:0702. Most of the stuff on it has already been posted here, but there was one reply from Ethan that I never saw before.

Quote:
[Reply EG. "…I really wish we could get a break on that, but I'm afraid our folks aren't getting any further than the OC community has [and I doubt we will, either; you all seem better suited or the types of stuff we've been dealing with on OC so far. You guys have the background for it; with the crypto and your near-mystical ability to bend Google to your wills and your unreal knowledge of everything from classic fantasy stories to organic chemistry. It's like you are all a bunch of old English professors / theoretical mathematicians or something.])

Anyway, that is a great idea. I will see if we can recover a sample of whatever is on the original document. Of course, we won't know how it relates, since we don't have any way to recover a sample from St. Pete…."]

I bolded the bold parts. I thought Ethan's reply was a little odd because the first part (the part that starts with "...I really wish") doesn't go with the question that yellowcard was asking. Then when I saw dashcat's reply those two bits jumped out. It feels like this must be a clue, but I have no idea what LotR or Tolkien could have to do with 0702.

Maybe Into the West is the clue? A direction? The song is from the third movie The Return of the King and into the west or going west is a euphemism for death or dying.

I started reading this forum a few days ago but I haven't had a chance to finish yet. I really like the way this is going.

Re: Into the West

That's a good thought on the song, but it might just be that they thought it would provide a good atmosphere for the video. In their last project the PMs made it obvious when a reference to a song or the like was a clue (making sense of it was another story), otherwise things like background music were for atmosphere. This seemed like that kind of thing since the video looked like a teaser, not a plot element.

P.S. I almost expected this thread to be another 10 pages long. I'm relieved they took a break for the holidays, too.

New gig with Whitechapel (but still a skeptic)
Journal Entry: Thu Dec 27, 2007, 10:20 AM
Quote:

Hellooooo Everybody!
(said in the loud, screechy voice of the little hobbit on "Lost" Very Happy)

Thought I'd mention that I've got a new - unofficial - thing going with those kooks over at the Whitechapel Foundation. (Actually, I think the only kook at Whitechapel is the guy I'm working with directly, but he's a very nice one by the name of Ethan )

Seems that one of the Open Cases they have going might have something to do with my neck o' the woods. They needed someone on the ground to check things out, so I told them I'd give it a shot. Personally, I think they are getting pranked, but we'll see. If you dig this project of theirs, I recommend registering at their site. My comrade Ethan says it's much easier to communicate with all the people working on the cases that way.

On the official side of the dabloon, Djinn Productions got some more work from one of the lovely (and only mildly kooky) Directors over at Whitechapel, Ms. Isabelle Hawkins. Some of you may have already seen this, since I worked on it and I was able to post it here at dA:

I hope you'll check it out if you haven't, it's one of the few things I've gotten to do on that side of the (virtual) camera. Wink

Hope you all had fantastic holidays all around.

More soon.

I hope you know that you are walking the left-handed path straight into the blackest of shadows. There is no light in that place. There is no way back out.

And Ethan updated his blog to say we've been a bit quiet. I'm emailing to let him know we aren't completely AWOL and to ask about that comment. I told him to have Frank check the logs to identify how spearmint found the site and to try to make contact using the email address spearmint left, if it's valid.

Into the West

dashcat wrote:

Dashcat: That's a great idea! Idea yellowcard posted a map image back on the 19th that drew the "checkmark" symbol on a map of St. Petersburg that shows the short leg of the symbol going to the East. Maybe the PM's are saying that the shorter leg should be going to the West.

I'm going to see if I can flip it.

UPDATE:

OK, I really need someone to check this if possible, because it looks a little off to me. I did this on my lunch break with a print out from Google maps and a crappy old ruler (luckily that city is mostly laid out on a grid). I am not great at geometry, but I think I got close.

I tried to plot out the points and then I went back to Google and connected the dots (that's a really cool app, BTW). I did it both ways because of the ritual saying that the first night was at a "place of power" and I still think that refers to the Cherry St. location. I thought the figure might be oriented the same way that it is drawn on the document, with the long leg pointed due south.

I personally think the 3rd ritual is going to take place somewhere in the area of 15th St. N and 46th Ave. N. (and depending on how you interpret what we know you could also make a case for it happening somewhere in the area of 15th St. N and 28th Ave. N.)

Please let me know if it looks like I'm way off on this.

Casa, you should email your speculation along to Ethan, see what he thinks. He'll have to coordinate with Jade to work out the details of investigating each site, anyway.

Further email updates.

Dear Mort,

Just got the info back from Frank regarding that "spearmint". I'm afraid it might not lead anywhere because it seems they used one of the anonymizer sites to post.

I guess Frank has some pretty cool tools, because he thinks he actually may have recovered most or all of the characters from the originating URL. He says he can't be sure he got then all, though.

Anyway, here are the characters he recovered

abeechwelitplymytownrot [ed. emphasis added]

and here is the info from the log:

So do we want to try emailing spearmint to find out what the post was about? Or shall we pass the buck and let WF follow-up?

If I read that correctly, then "abeechwelitplymytownrot" is supposedly part of the originating URL where spearmint found a link to the WF website. A quick web search pulled up nothing similar.

(And yes, I'm totally confused as to whether spearmint is an IG character or a non-uC player.)

He also replied that after 1/1/08, Kennedy at WF will determine how to proceed with 0701, given that he feels there's malicious intent involved.

And Ethan also had this to say
Quote:
Left-handed path [from spearmint's comment]; that actually make me smile because it reminded me of the first time I ever heard that term. It was in The List of Seven, by Mark Frost. Great book.

Wow. I thought I was the only one who had read "List Of Seven" It is a great book. I have the hard cover edition. I think I'll read it again Smile

My previous posts were pure speculation. I just knew the song that Casa was asking about so I posted to let him/her know. I do tend to think that titles of music or movies or plays that have a direction in the title might be a clue but I know this is not always the case.

I can't tell if Ethan is telling us to forget the LotR song as a clue or telling us we are on the right track. He says this (said in the loud, screechy voice of the little hobbit on "Lost" ) Because Dominic Monaghan played a hobit in LotR and he is in the TV show Lost.

All the talk about left hand and left path makes me think that west might actually be a clue since west is left on a map.

I still need to read about 7 pages of posts.

I say write to spearmint. Seems in game to me.

Oh also:

abeechwelitplymytownrot. The last part of that is my town rot. I tried rotting this part abeechwelitply but it didn't turn up anything.

I sent the map info I did on Friday to Ethan, but I haven't heard anything back on that yet.

Also, I sent an e-mail to spearmint and immediately got this message back:
Quote:
Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address.

<spearmint>:
Remote host said: 550 Mailbox unavailable or access denied - <spearmint> [RCPT_TO]

So it looks like that is a fake e-mail address, which is probably in keeping with the story since it makes sense that someone leaving that kind of comment would not want to identify themselves. I think that the fact that "Frank" was able to come up with characters from the originating URL means that it is IG. I haven't tried to do anything with that yet, but I did notice that the characters H T T P and C O M are in the list that Ethan provided.

Dashcat, I didn't even connect the Hobbit reference since it was from Jade on his Deviant Art journal. Good catch.

Working off Casa's observations on spearmint's possibly anagrammed URL:

that leaves us with "http://.com" and "abeewelilyywnrot"

My favorites: 'Leery Beltway Wino' and 'Beware Ye Linty Owl'. We won't discuss 'Bare Willowy Teeny'.

Ritual at Cherry St.

Ethan sent this reply back at 6:35 PM yesterday, in response to my sending him the map that I posted on Friday:
Quote:
Dear Casablanca,

Thank you for passing this on. Great work. The points you've plotted appear to make sense. Thinking through it all, I have a feeling you are on the right track; I just wish we had some other information that would confirm it. I'm going to pass this on to Christopher (since I'm pretty sure he's checking his E-mail) and see what he thinks.

Thank you, to you and the team,

Ethan

Looks like he updated the OC:0702 Supplement page with it also, and after that there is an update from Jade Macalla saying that he went to Cherry St. but wasn't able to go to the location near Sandra's house. There's also a link to a new video from Jade on Blip.tv: http://blip.tv/file/569900

So it looks like there have been 2 rituals so far, which means - I think - that the 3rd one's coming up.
