Re: reply from Ethan
from his Whitechapel address, rather pointedly I thought

Contacting Smoke: maybe part of the problem was the nickname used. Maybe we need names more in line with the whole "Smoke" thing. Since Philly used "Ramback," one of us should be the Marlboro Man or something.

Jade is not a "Foundation employee or asset," right? So he can still help us?

So exactly what we figured would happen...happened. I'm surprised the "St. Pete police" were so reasonable about the whole thing. Wouldn't have expected them to handle the occult with such aplomb.

Out of curiousity, did you send the original email to his GMail account? If so, I think that would seal it once and for all that Ethan is not BE.

Technically, Jade could be considered a WF asset, but he's a Djinn employee. However, his participation has been on his own time, so it's up to him whether he continues to help.

On the plus side, I wasn't questioned by any fictional police for the strange posts left on BE's site. So it's not as bad as it could've been.

Ethan said this:

The Foundation is still interested in the origin of the Scarpelli document, but we have no interest in the events that have occurred in St. Pete. The Foundation has made it clear that I (along with any other Foundation employee or asset) am to have absolutely nothing to do with any investigation into the events in St. Pete.

That's doesn't mean that we can't investigate what happened. And in the process if we find the source of the document we will pass it on to them. Otherwise, they just stepped on the brakes again and I don't really have any interest in searching for the source of that piece of paper. So I will continue to play the BE, Spearmint, Petra, Capnomantrix and Ramback side (game jack or not, it sounds more interesting). Otherwise, I'm losing interest and will just find something else to do.

Jade doesn't work for the Foundation, so he's still free to help us if he wants. I sent the original email to Ethan's gmail.

I'm not sure how much of a difference this makes in our ability to investigate St. Pete. I mean, it's not like Ethan was even here for most of it.

Hey, man, funny you should write. I was just going to send you a note asking if you had made contact with Smoke, since I've noticed that she jumps on Skype a couple times a day, usually only for a few minutes at a go.

Anyway, yeah, I agree; always better to know where the slack-jawed yokels [ed. at Reality Now] are (second best is knowing where they aren't). Wait a minute, you mean The Golden Compass isn't imperiling anyone's soul? Heck.

Back to Smoke. So you did try to contact her. Cool. Sounds like you didn't have the right password. Hold on, let me go back and look at the stuff you sent. OK, back. Yeah, it looks like there a process to follow (she appears to like civility and brevity Very Happy ). So the two code-ins that Petra saw were 'midnight blue' and 'salmon'. I assume you cats found a connection if you thought you had a valid password to use. What connection did you see? Do you think that your reasoning is no longer valid? Wouldn't count on her telling you the protocol. If she is anything like some of the "spooky" people I know she'll keep it close from here to never.

Good old institutional CYA [ed. Whitechapel Foundation's response to the video], huh? LOL. What else is St. Pete PD gonna do? Like you say, kids messing around with video cameras isn't gonna grab their attention. I know several of the street cops and detectives over there, they've got real crimes to worry about.

Hell no, man, I don't work for them [ed.The Whitechapel Foundation]. I'm an independent contractor working for a vendor. What I do on my own time is my own freakin' business. That kind of high-handed attitude just makes me want to get more involved. Wink Let me know what you hear from Smoke; I'm getting curiouser and curiouser.

More soon,
Jade

Think "curiouser and curiouser" is an oblique reference to Alice in Wonderland? Welcome to the rabbithole, Mr. Macalla.

I like the smoke-related screen name idea. If I manage to create a Skype account, I'll take the name Dunhill (or a variation thereon, if that's taken).

Okay then, my skype name is perique3 (perique was taken). Pallmall or a variation thereof might also be a good choice, since that's the address of WCF UK.

Sounds like Jade's our man. Still waiting to hear back from his recon of St. Pete's & NJ, though. Wonder if he might be willing to check with his cop contacts about our missing Philly, put out some feelers or something.

We may be heading into a new phase here... at least I hope so, since WC isn't helping... Just so we have everything straight, does Jade know about all the sites we do? RN, BE? I don't think he knows about the NJ scifi club, I can use that as an excuse to email him again.

So a greeting may be necessary, rather than just hitting her with a password/color name straight off. (I may be asking too much to hope that "hello" will do, but here's hoping anyway...)

DAMMITALLTOHELL, Smoke messaged me with a "?" just before 3pm and I was asleep. Bang Head Crying or Very sad

Her profile says "Contacts: 2". What does that mean exactly, that she only has 2 contacts? Who are they?

If/when we do get lucky with the password, what question(s) should we have ready to ask? Here's what I'd like to know, for starters:

Where is Ramback/Philly?
Who is Brighton Early?
Who was the Nov. 12 target?
Who is Reality Now?
Who will be initiated in London Feb. 6?

Although the first thing I'd like to know, of course, is what the password is. Laughing

Dammit! She came on and I screwed it up! Maybe she'd be more receptive if the smoke theme extended to my "real name" as well. Ramback has "P.M.", which could just as easily stand for Philip Morris.

[10:03:33 PM] Dick Grayson says: He goes by Ramback on here.

That's all there is. She signed off. It could be she's just not interested in talking about Philly at all.

Hello, all. I'm back from visiting the internet black hole. It sure is boring over there, and I recommend that you don't ever visit. I'd like to thank AT&T or SBC or whoever it was that transfered my call three times to get me someone who could tell me why I went so long without a connection.

Anywho, nothin' like a good round of spec to get back in the saddle, hmm?

I apologize for sending the gamejack theory out there; it was really an off-the-cuff remark. The danger of publishing the third location, whether to Ethan or even right here on unFiction, is that it opens up the possibility of a third party to "perform the ritual" and record it so as to hijack the game a bit. Sure, there are a lot of extra characters involved, but why not? Is this a gamejack? I shrug my shoulders.

> If so, it would make sense for Ethan to tell us to ignore St. Pete completely. Oops, the uC followed the wrong trail and now it's back to the drawing board for the PMs.

> If not, it certainly seems like a plausible way to pass the narrative off from WF to Jade. I am having a really hard time accepting that the Scarpelli document has nothing to do with the events in StP since the first one (Nov) happened before the ARG started and the second one (Dec) occurred before we knew about it, not to mention that WF sent us the info on the Dec event through "Sandra" in the first place.

I'm not going to discuss the gj idea anymore unless the PMs send us a sign. It's not worth the energy otherwise.

Speaking of signs, I don't think anyone noticed this in Jade's blog:

Quote:
Sometimes the beauty of the thing is only apparent in the word that isn't written. Or the line that isn't drawn.

Followed by...

Or the achingly adolescent thought that isn't thunk.

Oh brother.

David Lee Roth makes me want to just out a 6th story window.

Look between "just" and "out". What's word isn't written? Why, it's "jump"!

I don't know what it means but it can't be by accident, considering the name of the popular song by Van Halen (of which Roth was the lead singer at the time), "Jump".

Also, since Jade mentions a missing line, could that refer to something? Maybe I've been drawing too many maps.

The adolescent thought that is unthunk. We must be missing something easy.

That is all.

So...does that mean we need to figure out the shade of David Lee Roth's shirt in the video?

Looks like we definitely need the right password before Smoke will talk. What shade of purple do you get when you combine salmon and midnight blue?

Quote:
Mort,

You're probably right about Florida; no big loss.

Personally, I still think BE is one of you all. I figured one of you went down there since you knew I wouldn't be able to and then tried to play it stealthy to make sure it didn't look like it was my idea. No way to know if a WF mailing list was used, since I don't know everyone who was contacted.

From what I've been able to figure out, Jade doesn't qualify as anyone's asset but Jade's.

Yeah, I've been wrapping up this other stuff and am planning to get back into 0701. I'll check on those keywords and details you provided. I haven't had time to give any good thought to MSG4 recently, at this point that sounds like a good idea. I have a feeling that we're going to have to really search outside the box on that one.

No worries, everything's cool. I think it was pretty obvious to the honchos that I didn't have anything to do with what happened.

Thanks,
Ethan

Patton Oswalt was right. It really is gayer than eight guys blowing nine guys.

Colorwise, the recurring theme seems to be orange, but at a few points David Lee Roth seems to mysteriously change outfits into something blue-grey. The first shirt you see is yellow with black stripes, whatever that means.

The second result when you search for "Van Halen Jump video" is a recording of them playing live in Greensboro.

If "Jump" and those posts were a clue, they probably had to do with solving MSG4, not the password.

Password guesses: as badaim pointed out, midnight blue and salmon are web colors. Why not try some of the purple web colors? Violet, Orchid and the like? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_colors

Orchid didn't work.

It means "Welcome to the 80's! We wear the loudest, gaudiest stuff we could find and then we try to look really cool on MTV."

Good Lord, how embarrassing. I grew up in this generation. Great song, cheeezzball video.

Welcome to the rabbithole, Alice.

We didn't really have a valid connection. Intuition suggested a shade of purple. Either that was completely the wrong color, or we just got the shade wrong. Maybe we need to figure out what shade of purple you get when midnight blue and salmon are mixed. I don't think it was a matter of "no longer" being valid, so much as whatever we thought of never was valid.

Really, man, Jump? You're dating yourself. I suppose at least it's not New Order.

Think those cop friends of yours would have any info on tracking down Philly and Slider? Maybe Philly and Slider got busted for something and the cops know a way to reach them.

Totally unassociated thought: have you ever met Calvin, the guy at WF you said Valley knows?

Still pecking away,
Mort

Dude, You need to seriously re-think your stance on 80's Alternative music. There's a whole big wonderful world out there that's looking for a hug.

I'm a big fan of intuition, especially the kind that's correct Wink. Midnight blue and salmon don't jump out at me as being all that connected - other than the obvious. I was thinking some sort of design colour scheme, but the related possibilities are limitless. Unless Smoke only deals with other "psychics", you'd think there would be some sort of algorithm. I'll keep thinkin'.

Unless those two are so well know that their names or aliases are common knowledge, I doubt anyone I know would know them. But who knows, stranger things happen all the time around here. I'll make a couple calls.

Nope, never met Calvin. Been at Djinn a couple times when he was on the speaker phone so I'm pretty sure he's a real person Wink. Sounds like Paul Bettany.

More soon,
Jade
