Sweet job on the color table, guys. What should we say to Slider? Should we pretend to be PIs hired by Petra or something? I guess a PI wouldn't just come out and identify themselves or their employer directly, but it would be a story to fall back on.

email from Jade

I sent him transcripts of my & Mort's chats yesterday w/ Smoke, and got this back just now. Also told him about the Slider=Trix? theory.

Jade wrote:
I'd say she probably needed some time to stare into the smoke. Who knows what type of smoke she uses. Maybe she had to get her tobacco pouch and favourite pipe out of the escritoire. Since I'm something of a skeptic at heart, I'm still inclined to say Trixie is some kind of set-up, but I must admit that this POV starts to slide (no pun) a bit with these recent developments (since they don't make much sense Wink ).

If Slider is Trixie, he might tell Philly to dump Petra so that he (Slider) could move in on her (but that supposes that Philly does not know Slider is Trixie, in which case the cat set-up doesn't make sense anymore, or maybe it does - see what I mean). I'm starting to get the feeling that Philly did not know who Trixie was, other than what she appears to be.

You make a good point about the nature of eternity (or infinity) that most people wouldn't get. The first part wasn't too tough (I don't slink I'm kidding myself too much to say that I think I would have been able to figure that out (although not so quickly)), so maybe the second part is figure-out-able as well.

I think I'll try to crack this one (just to prove that I can't Very Happy). Let's have a contest to see who can solve it fastest (and I promise I will not engage the services of my online comrades) Wink . Ready. Set. Go!

(EDIT: Yeah Luke, I notice Sylvia did a lot of work on the wiki last night... it's really starting to look like something now! Mr. Green Jetpack )

EDIT 2: I have no idea how to approach Slider. We have so little information about him... whether he's a real friend of Philly's or whether he is/was just using him. Petra says he "seemed pretty nice," but we don't have much more than that.

On Skype chat we discussed possibly just saying Ctrix sent us.

Submitted for comment-Autumn Country connections (from Nic's Journal 2)
Sylvia pointed out that the rook in the WF logo is the Enclave symbol on the AC website. That reminded me to go back and look for something I'd seen awhile back in Nic's Journal. We've speculated about all this stuff before, but here's a bit more in the way of concrete support.

http://autumncountry.net/ac-e-nicjournal_2a.html

Relevant excerpts:
Quote:
But the truth is that E [ed. Enclave] (along with their front(s)) seems to hear about everything, and 99% of what they hear they already know to be crap. It's that other 1% that they have already checked against their crap-files that gets handed to C [ed. Calvin?] to look into. And, of course, C hands some of those over to me (and to some other folks I guess, no idea how many).

Which would seem to indicate WF is a front for the Enclave. They pass the bushwah stuff to people like Ethan to investigate. If the prove out, then they move it up the chain of command to Calvin. St. Pete turned out to be the real deal, so it ended up with Brighton Early, who all things considered, must be Calvin.

Quote:
"C goes to great lengths to remind me that the main reason E is in this business, its charter, is to identify these people and then keep a close eye on them to make sure they don't do anything crazy."

Which ties to what BE told us in replies to comments at the wordpress site. They don't care about what we know, just finding out about other unknowns.

Quote:
"Maybe I'd try to talk outright with C. Maybe snoop around a little on my own; quietly and very carefully. Maybe I'd fly to London and see what was behind The Whitechapel Foundation's solid old Pall Mall address."

More confirmation that someone else in AC suspects WF of being a front. We clearly goofed by going to Ethan. To be fair to us, BE dropped us well in advance of that.

Message from Jade

Response from Jade after mailing him about possible contacts in London to snoop on the 6th Feb events:

Quote:
Well, I know a couple people in London and in the surrounding 'burbs, but I strongly doubt they are the types of people to have any interest at all in the shenanigans that these RN people seem to be into.

From the little bit that I have seen of RN they look to be pretty clueless. Didn't you guys figure out that they were rousting some book club? I mean, come on. They just seem like background noise to me, unless you guys have gotten some new info that points to them being more interesting than they appear to be.

More soon,
Jade

PS. Let Petunia know that I am about to win our little wager - I think (it's a shame there were no stakes Wink ).

So is that "not important and possible gamejack" or "is important but we haven't found out something specific about them".....oh what a tangled web we weave.

Petunia, what's that about a wager??

I think it's the latter. There are bits of RN's shorthand that we never quite figured out, not to mention their weird usernames. And if they're so useless, how did they know about r3 in the first place, hmm?

The shorthand, and the garbage comments on the WC blog (the latter are on the wiki in the MSG4 section: http://whitechapel.despoiler.org/index.php?title=MSG4) are two things that have been bugging me for a long time. I keep meaning to sit down and have a really good stare at them but something more pressing (and easier) always seems to come up.

It really wasn't a wager per se, just a contest he proposed to see who could figure out the "eternity" thing first. I didn't reply because I figured it was just Skype, but was afraid to discourage him from looking.

And on that note...!!

Howdy, Petunia:

Regarding our gentleperson's wager (which I didn't hear back from you on, so I just assumed that you thought it was a super idea Very Happy ), I believe I am in a position to collect the (nonexistent) stakes.

At some point during my (mostly hopeless) ruminations today it occurred to me that when I was in third grade I thought the biggest number in the world (which would get it about as close to infinity or eternity as I could imagine at the time) was a 1 followed by 100 zeros, or a googol. It was only a small skip from there to Google Mail or gmail.

So I think there is a slider888SPLATgmail.com . I haven't tested that theory yet, since I figured that if I am right I didn't want to say anything counterproductive to the little imp. Let me know if that works out (so I can gloat a little more Wink )

With fingers crossed,

Jade

Me to Slider888's gmail address

Our Lady of Smoke indicated I should contact you.

Slider888 (Quinton Salamanca) auto-response (arrived as soon as I hit send):

I don't know you, because if I did you would not be here.

If I should know you here is a question:

What is perfection?

If I should not know you I wouldn't bother with the question.

(smile)

So if we want to find out more, we need to know what perfection is. Godhood? Balance? A circle? Impossible?

We should all send an intro email to Slider, just so that we get more chances to get this right.

Quinton Salamanca pulls up nothing via search.

I've been busy working on the wiki and haven't taken the time to see if anything can be made of this.

exactly 16 letters each

Code:

adding more

 P H I L L I P M A R K O V I C H
 Q U I N T O N S A L A M A N C A
 W H A T I S P E R F E C T I O N

here are some 14 letter phrases:
Code:

 E N L I L A H A S U E R U S

Code:

 A H A S U E R U S

(* represents a period)

Maybe these are all just coincidence, but someone went to a whole lot of trouble making them add up.
I/we need to take the time to see if there are more.

this was an email I sent to Petra on Saturday when we were getting desperate to figure out Smoke Lady's code.
Sylvia to Petra wrote:
Petra,

Thank you for your help. We are getting closer, I hope. It's just proving to be very difficult to come up with the pass code to get capnomantrix to talk to us.

There is another person, a woman named Sandra, though not directly involved in the strange stuff that's going on, witnessed something similar a few weeks before the incident with Philly. We were worried for her safety and actually she could still be in danger somehow. She contacted us about the incident and that is another reason we are working so hard to get in contact with smoke lady.

As one of our group said, "Somebody out there is trying to pull off some seriously weird shit, and it could affect lots of people. I mean it did have an effect on Sandra. Luckily that seems to have been temporary but it sounded pretty scary. At first, I was afraid bad stuff was gonna happen to Sandra like she was gonna be taken over by some oogie boogie."

Now you are going to think I've really lost my marbles when you hear what I'm going to ask you next. But, and I know it's a long shot, do you remember the time of day capnomantrix came online? I noticed that you said on Sunday, Jan 6th, that you and Philly were getting ready to go out to a sports bar to watch a game. If you can't remember the time, maybe the game that you were going to watch will get us an approximation of the time. And on Monday, Dec. 31st, you said you wrote it down in your date book about the cat being missing. Is it possible you could recall the approximate time you asked capnomantrix where the cat is? By the way, what is your cats name?

Oh heck, I've came this far I might as well go for broke and really let my marbles loose. Did Philly happen to have a box of Crayola Crayons? If so, how big was the box? Did you ever see him using them? If so, what would he do with them? Did he leave them behind when he left? Did he leave his laptop behind when he left?

I know this all sounds really silly, but we believe that the key to the code capnomantrix uses has to do with the month, date, day of week and maybe even hour of the day. And that maybe the key is then used on a box of crayons to get the color code.

If he left his laptop behind, maybe you could have a look at it for us and check the history and see what websites he was viewing.

I've done lost it, but Thank You,
Sylvia

Since we figured out the code, I really didn't expect an answer at all but I got this a few minutes ago. One thing it did serve, though, was to refresh my memory on her full name, Petra Cristanos. Which is 14 letters, so I added it to my post above.
Petra to Sylvia wrote:
Hi Sylvia,

Crayons? I guess that should seem really strange and it does but probably not as strange as if I had never known Philly. He didn't have a box of crayons that I know about, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did. Some people are just different, you know, and he was like that. Like if you found out something weird about him, it wouldn't surprise you at all. No he didn't leave his laptop he always kept that with him.

It's hard to remember the exact times when he chatted with that smoke lady, but it seems like it must have been later in the afternoon, probably between 5 and 6 pm. Sorry, but I don't think I can narrow it down any more than that.

Petra

Howdy there, Ms Petunia.

No way, a fellow coffee geek! Well, good on ya. Of all the geeks to be, that is one of the best (although I have recently been exploring the world of chocolate geekdom, definitely worth a look). The fact that you are actually corresponding with Crayola about crayon esoterica definitely puts you on the top of the heap for this round.

Also, I think the Sky(pe) eternity angle makes a lot of sense. I'm glad I didn't think of that, 'cause I wouldn't figured that was right on.

Ethan's cool, I talked to him earlier today. He's been laid low by the mega-flu. A horrid case of the croup that has kept him in bed for the past several days. He sounded like hammered...um, that was about to be insensitive...let's just say hammered offal, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

Good luck with Mr. Smiley. Good thing I didn't e-mail him, I probably would have hurled my waffle across the room if I had gotten that enigmatic reply.

More soon,
Jade

By way of explanation:

I had emailed Crayola earlier asking if the different color crayons were always put in the boxes in the same order. Turns out they're not, it's pretty much random. Oh well, it was a nice idea I thought.

I'd also told J we were getting worried about Ethan's lack of contact (I've had a comment on his blog "awaiting moderation" for THREE DAYS now).

Interestingly, Mort made a comment on it last night, and IT'S been approved. What am I, chopped liver? Raspberry

My (unapproved) comment:
Quote:
Ethan, are you okay? Buried under more paperwork? Mort says you haven't been answering emails.

Mort's (approved) comment:
Quote:
The workload affecting your leisure time these days, too?

Do we really have anything to say to Ethan? He can't comment on anything to do with Capno or St. Pete.

We could use his help with 070

My comments on Ethan's WordPress don't require approval. Don't recall if that's because I registered there or not.

spec: comments & trackbacks on MSG4

Not sure where we left this, but IIRC we didn't get far. I've been looking at it and a few vague patterns emerge.

The "..." at the end of each comment: I don't know if that's just how trackbacks are done or what, or if it's suggesting a series of some kind. The way the 2 alphanumeric ones are truncated the second time is also interesting - the last eight characters (of 20 total) are left off.

The way the letters & numbers are mixed up. The pattern changes a couple times, and isn't quite the same for each trackback.

The fact that only letters a-f show up may point to some kind of hex involvement.

Notice the timestamps... hlbgvloi and frhogmcr could be the same person. The last two trackbacks could also have been left by one person.

Again, the garbled words all have 8 letters, and there are 8 words in the frhogmcr comment. (Isn't 8 one of the Biblical numbers for perfection or completeness?)

Within the words, there are these double letters: xx, vv, uu, zz. But not always in the same place in the word. There are also these possible patterns: ncn, vjvj, ldl, cec, jfj (again, they move around). In the trackback strings, there is a 6a6 and a 7c7, but (of course) not in the same place.

That's as far as I got before hitting this thing Arrow Bang Head We need code monkeys!!!

Sorry for the double post, but Ethan's finally posted to his blog. Seems he has the flu from hell. So maybe the PM playing him has just been really sick, and we can stop the mad spec. (We'll see.)
