[TRAILHEAD?] The Games of Those

Hey I got this link in my inbox the other day and after looking it over I'm pretty sure its an ARG, what do you guys think?

The original message said: I know you're the type of person to care about what is really going on. There's something you must know. www.freewebs.com/thegamesofthose

I sure hope that it is just the sexiest of us. Let's just hope that no un-sexy people show up and talk... Laughing

I emailed the guy and he replied asking for a story and he could tell me how I had no control over it.

UPDATE (long)
James' website is compromised

I must admit I began playing this ARG a couple of days ago, but I wanted to make sure it was an ARG and not someone with MPD or delusional schizophrenia before sharing here. The PM is apparently a good storyteller.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that James' website was apparently compromised.

Here is the email exchange I've had with James before the compromised site:

Quote:
Doug,

To be honest I've been a very sickly person for as long as I can remember. So was James and Melissa, as I recall, were always just as sick as I was. Red tide, though, can also bring on coughing fits. Healthier people can usually handle it but I was no match.

The beach is a beautiful thing. Tourists however are not. Tourists are just another little tool created by Them to suck the life out of one more thing we hold precious.

What causes your coughing fits? I hope it's not related to the sea. I've been to the ocean myself only twice. Once was at Wilmington, NC (Kure Beach, actually) and the other at Myrtle Beach, SC. I really liked both visits.

Doug,

My wife was another in the long list of loved ones They've taken from me. There was nothing that I could do to stop her from leaving. And I wasn't faultless, mind you, that's how they get you. They prey on your mistakes. They prey on your every weakness.

I'm not sure how hearing is connected exactly. I do know that my dear old father wore ear plugs for a few years before he died. I'm not sure if it helped, because he spent those years somewhere in South Africa. I wish I could've asked him. You, my friend, may be better off then the rest of us who are blessed with better hearing. Let us hope so.

Your friend,
-James

I am sorry about your wife. How did you lose her? Forgive me for sounding abrupt, but it seems that maybe you wouldn't mind me asking.

No, I'm not deaf, but I do have a slight hearing loss since birth. There are pitches that I have never heard. I can hear a concert triangle being played only if the room is quiet and I am close enough to hear it; hence, you will never find a score with a triangle written by me. Based on what your father said, perhaps my "disadvantage" bodes well for me --- of course, not as much as for Beethoven.

I don not regret being married; I regret not spending more time with my wife when she was still my wife. Florida is the correct answer. I was actually out there today, a younger friend of mine was surfing and he asked me to take pictures. I was so overwhelmed with coughing fits that I had to go home. I hope he understood.

I am not a scholar of music. I only have what my father, who was a scholar, has told me to go by. He always said that the only real composer to never lose his emotional connection to the art was Beethoven, and this was only because he could not hear. You're not deaf, are you?

"Destroyed" seems a little harsh. Regardless, I contend that music since the mid-20th century has been driven by the theory instead of the other way around: theory should be driven by the music. Instead of telling me who was destroyed by the science of music, please tell me who was not.

Red tide on a gulf...Florida or Texas. I know it is difficult, maybe even impossible to infer tone of voice in an email, but you seem to say that you were once married and that you regret it. I am open to being incorrect.

Doug,

It is good to know that my efforts have not gone unnoticed. It is also good to meet a fellow artist. You wish to know a little about me? I am a person of ordinary talent and ordinary skill. I have a sister Melissa and a halfbrother Wes. He and I share the same father, but that's about all we share. He, unlike you, is not worried about the future. He, unlike you, chooses to keep his pride.

I live on a gulf. It is red tide at the moment but it is normally very pretty. I used to be married.

You say you're studying music? That, my friend is a dangerous road, because the more they teach you of the math and science of music the more you will become distant from music's true beauty. My father, may he rest in piece, used to tell me that most of the greatest composers throughout history were destroyed in this very way.

Please, friend, tell me more.

Hello James,

Just found your website. Very interesting.

You have invited me to tell you about me, but you tell me nothing of yourself. I will tell you a little about me and allow you to tell me how I am being manipulated, and in turn expect you to give me some details about yourself. Who knows? Perhaps I can give you insight into how maybe you are being manipulated. But as I said, who knows?

I am a student at a small liberal arts college majoring in music theory and composition. There. That's a start.

Doug

His "new" website is at http://www.freewebs.com/theonlytruthishere/ although it looks like he fixed his old site (minus the guestbook).

In the meantime he sent an email to five or so people, which I replied to:

Quote:
James,

I'm sorry I missed what's going on. What happened exactly? Your original website (thegamesofthem) looks like it's been restored. Today has been busy for me and I didn't get your email until now. Maybe you should tell me more about yourself -- maybe I can help.

There are many questions:

Where in Florida are you?

Who is your father, and why is that important?

Who is your half-brother's father, and why is that important?

Who are "They"?

I have more questions but this is a start. Take care of yourself.

Doug

They finally did it. It took them longer than I expected. They have somehow hacked my web page and taken control from me.
Don't worry, all is not lost. I believe that they will try to cast doubt on my cause, so I advise you to keep up with what They
say on my old site: it could give us insight into they're overall goals. In the meantime, you can check on my new official page
www.freewebs.com/theonlytruthishere

-James

P.S. Do what you can to notify anyone and all parties concerned with this information. Thank you.

Is anyone else on this board in?

EDIT: I took out some extraneous carriage returns to shorten the post.

I should have asked, but he has a half-brother named Wes, who may or may not be one of "Them". Either James has MPD (multiple-personality disorder) or the PM slipped by mentioning the name James instead of Wes.

Hmmm, maybe he did slip up, I don't know. Possibly there is another brother names James, which I wouldn't rule out considering that we know he has one half-brother...why couldn't there be more partial siblings? Step siblings maybe?

He has before mentioned two siblings:

Wes, his half-brother -- same father, different mothers.
Melissa, his full sister -- same two parents.

Edit above in bold.[/b]

Sorry for the double post. This is James' response to the last email. Apparently, his original website is not to be trusted at all.

Quote:
Doug,

It only looks restored. I am no longer in control over The Games of Those. If nothing has changed yet then I expect that it will soon, and when it does, be careful what you believe.

Now, Let's answer your questions in the order you poised them, shall we?

-I live on the Gulf Coast, any more information than that is threatening to my safety.

-My father was the first of us to know. He was also the first person I ever knew that had actually met Them. He is important because I loved him, and without his experiences we would all be in the dark.

-Wes's father is my father. They always said that my father was different.

-They are something else. They are not human, but as I recall they used to be. I do not know much else. I'm sorry friend.

Do not lose hope, Doug.
-James

Latin?

I found this in the page source for the 'new' site. It looks like latin to me, although I'm not completely sure. Anyone have a knack for languages?
