[PRESS] SciFi Magazine confirms: MONSTER IS NOT CTHULHU!!

SciFi Magazine has an interview with Bryan Burk in their Feb 2008 issue (Zachary Quinto on the cover).

In the interview, he confirms the monster IS NOT Cthulhu.

Quote:
Debunking some popular Internet rumors, Burk confirms it is not based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft, nor is it tied in to the eventual outcome of Lost. "It's an entirely original story and monster. There's no tie-in to any of our other projects quite yet. We're obviously fans of the great monster movies.

Sorry Great Dark One.

I have scans of the article here: http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/2007/12/cloverfield-in-scifi-magazine-feb-08.html

Also from the article:

Quote:
"From the beginning, we always referred to it as Cloverfield because it's relevant to the movie. We had a lot of initial conversations about what to call the movie, plus there was a long process, for some weird reason, in clearing the name. So we had brief conversations about calling it something else, but we were never calling it Monstrous," he says, referring to early title rumors. "What really happened is that it leaked online and people found out what we were calling it, so basically the fans named the movie. "
...
Whether others agree with Burk's assessment remains to be seen, but he seems confident in the reaction they've gotten so far. "We've only had two internal screenings, and one was for a group of people who had not seen the script. All of their reactions, to quote them, was that it was one of the rare occasions where the movie lives up to the trailer. I think people are going to love it. It's like a nonstop ride. The experience of watching this movie is like nothing I've personally ever seen ... I hate using bad cliches, but it's an authentic, visceral thriller."

Pausing, he adds with a laugh, "And there is nothing I love more than watching the movie and literally I'm laughing to myself, thinking, 'From the creators of Felicity!'"

let me see if i can find it. i think it was at that comic con interview. i might be wrong, but it was an interview where he debunked cthulu, godzilla, and some other speculations. i know the interview wasn't vague, he just said it out right.

Thanks Dennis.

I'm calling B.S. on the "fans naming the movie"...no way, he and Reeves are spinning the fact that for whatever reason they were unable or unwilling to go with what they really wanted to use.

I'm with you on this. I'm pretty sure he admitted in a roundabout way that they couldn't get the rights to their desired name(s). I don't believe "Cloverfield" was in the running at all at the start; why all the suspense about a name everyone was using since the day the teaser debuted?

Not complaining though. I love the title. It's ambiguous and mysterious and other big words that end with "ous."

So does this mean there's a possibility?

I wonder if any of it has to do with the name they were going to use, the one that they said "you would have to see the movie to understand". Maybe that title would have spoiled some stuff or something.

I still think "Overnight" was the original name but the viral campaign caused "Cloverfield" to emerge as the best "bet" for a title. Plus (as has been mentioned before), cloverfield is very intriguing and would draw non ARE people to the theater to ask what it is instead of saying "something bad is going to happen OVERNIGHT". Mystery is driving this movie. Good Job JJ!!

And yet they felt the need to register MonstrousMovie.com on May 20th, two months before the poster leaked, as well as TheMonstrousMovie.com on June 7th.

Interested to see how it ties in. I'm trying to find this post on here but I can't seem to think straight(it's 4 am and I've been doing some drinking)

Anyways basically something about this parasite that they have in Japan that is named Cloverfield because it looks like a field of clovers. Anybody else catch this?

Actually, if you read it carefully, he's talking about "Cloverfield."

It's the name I've always known the movie by and I'm sure I'm not alone (Well, obviously now) so I'm glad they kept it.
