Well.. Technically it stood for something.. but not directly.
Move each of those letters one further along in the alphabet and what do we get?

H -> I
A -> B
L -> M

Cool

That is awesome! Nice cipher work, did you do figure that out on your own?

By the way, IBM is another acronym that doesn't mean anything (except for whatever it stands for) ...tons of organizations have acronyms that don't spell out anything specific. For example, just about every University goes by an acronym.

In addition to the classic IBM reference, HAL was an acronym. I don't think it was addressed in the movie, but I'm pretty sure it was in the book:

Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer

It's an urban legend; Arthur C. Clarke himself has stated that he never had that intention.

And "IBM" stands for "International Business Machines"...

Which part is urban legend?

Edit: I think the point about IBM was that it didn't make a word, it was just an acronym.

Quote:
The author of 2001, Arthur C Clarke emphatically denies the legend in his book "Lost Worlds of 2001", claiming that "HAL" is an acronym for "Heuristically programmed algorithmic computer". Clarke even wrote to the computer magazine Byte to place his denial on record.

It goes on to doubt whether he's telling the truth... Hence it being an arguable "urban legend".

I used to be an avid supporter of TIDOWAVE being IG, but if it does not have an update in the next day or two I think that we have to call it OOG.

When we first found the site it made it seem as though people were writing blogs at least twice a week, but now after a week no new articles. This suggests to me a gamejacker just got bored. Though I hope to be proved wrong.

DUCKS RULE - There is a post on IMDB Rolling Eyes that claims to know who is behind tidowave.com and is pissed because they muddied the waters they were enjoying swimming in by putting it out there. Even names some of the people involved. Now, it is IMDB soooooo........

In which case you have to call the Tagruato site hack OOG because how could someone have known about the TIDO hack before it happened?

Remember the registration date of the site, that's the most important thing in this.

Yeah, the registration date is the one thing that is keeping hope alive for me, because I do not know how someone would have been able to change their registration date.

But I just wonder why there are no posts before the date the site is created? Most every other ARG website tries to provide legitimacy by backdating some entries to give it the look of a long running site.

Just for the record, is it me or have there been NO approved comments on TIDOWave since the 6th?

We expected to believe that an environmental group with such an aggressive push against Tagruato doesn't work on weekends? Or even on Fridays, for that matter? Rolling Eyes

If people still don't belive Tidowave is real, then the gamejackers have well and truly won. Shocked

By the way, The Dumbo octopus is identical to the one on the hacked page, apart from the curves in the area which hid the roman numerals. I can't imagine anyone reshaping that area, rather than just removing the number, if they'd reverse engineered it.

Question: Has the site led anywhere or provided any information we didn't already know? I really don't think it has, the stuff they wrote on the site could have been inferred from what we already knew. A little creativity and bang, you have a site.

EDIT: Can whois info be faked? I assume it could be, but I don't really know.

I'm with this guy. I'm on the fence about The Glass Helmets, but TIDOWave, in my opinion, is definitely IG.

I don't think it can, if the Whois info could be faked then why haven't other gamejackers faked their Whois info? Why just this one?

If this site is fake, then so is the hack. Somebody posted on this forum that hacking a GoDaddy registered site is a really difficult thing to do.

If someone is going to risk breaking the law to jack an ARG then I would think that they would think that they have something to gain from it. What would the jackers behind TIDOWave have to gain from such a risky act?

Ok. My two reasons for thinking TIDOWave might be OOG are as follows.

1: The site was not backdated to make it appear as though it has existed for years. This is a ploy used in every single other IG site we have found.

2: The site has become dead over the last several days, without so much as a confirmed message. All of the entries are put up within a few days of each other to make it seem as though the entries are regular. Yet we have had nothing new for quite some time.
