I also agree that this guy is totally wrong and must have zero knowledge of the entire online campaign, but he does also explain something I've heard other people have questions over...

...and again, i agree that this is artistic license, and nothing more...

but some people have issues with how there seems to still be debri in the air around the SoL at the same time that there's the wake and the destruction to the city. One, fluid movement of something incredible massive like 'manhattan's tentacle' might explain it.

This is again if you are to disregard the fact that the poster seems to take place at dawn, counter to everything we know about the monster's attack, and when the SoL's head is actually removed. but if you are just looking to justify the contradictions of the poster itself, this theory would do.

I've expressed at other times that I do think there's something to the "it's alive" thing...mostly because of the scene in the trailer where someone is really trying, in the midst of everything, to tell Rob directly "Rob! Rob! Rob, i saw it, it's ali-"

I still find it odd, an awkward emphasis. In the context of the movie, it'll probably make more sense, possibly just playing on Rob maybe becoming the de facto leader of their little escape group.

But yeah...errr....While I would not in any way be pissed to have this monster be the island of manhattan, I find it highly unlikely.

Imagine, having this movie immediately put the word Manhattan into this alternate context...as the monster would probably just be called that. Then imagine the damage if Manhattan roamed though America, destroying everything in it's path.

I reviewed his video and frankly I'm surprised I'm the only one who has. Copy and pasted the review below

Shameless Self Promotion

As someone who has followed the unfolding Cloverfield Drama through the viral websites such as Slusho.jp and Tagruato.jp I can tell you that you are absolutely wrong on all points. If you had even attempted to follow along with the marketing campaign JJ and his crew have been throwing at us you would know it debases your theory on all points. I bet that you are aware of that. I think you are surfing on the marketing wake from Cloverfield to promote your Rock Opera and that is it. You came up with a loose very easily made up theory with very little fact and slyly interjected little snippets and adverts about your Rock Opera . So when 01-18-08 rolls around and you find that you are wrong, which you will be on all accounts, I hope you find that your parasitic marketing siphon paid off, although if your Rock Opera is about the Brooklyn Bridge being a chain to hold the monster that IS Manhattan Island and the family who built it I fear that your Opera is already Dead in the Water.

Manhattan is a Leviathan, people are dying, and two young people from totally different worlds find each other in the chaos. Can love prevail when tentacles rise from the upper east side?

ugh. I just watched a minute and a half of a guy plugging his rock opera he's been writing for almost a decade... uuuuuh. I stopped watching there. I don'[t think I missed anything good.

Wouldn't the line "I saw it! It's alive" make NO sense? Cause, you know, obviously if the island is alive, there's nowhere to run. You'd say "omfg I saw it and we're standing right on it!!! Try to fly!!!"

OK, I for one don't find his six reasons all that compelling.

1) "The wake is the result of a tentacle"
The wake we see in the poster is the result of an artist's interpretation of the after effects of the monster's motion. It may well be that the artist never even saw concept art for the highly secretive monster, and was just told to show that something big had moved through the water towards Manhattan. I don't think we can take the poster as a literal interpretation of the events in the movie. Even if it were a tentacle, why would it necessarily come down "all at once" as he says, instead of entering the water first near its "shoulder" perhaps?

2) "That looks like a tentacle, right?"
Um, no. The famous few frames that we all believe show the monster have certainly been subject to numerous interpretations, but few if any have suggested it was a giant tentacle. Most people see large legs moving below, and/or a shell-like structure. Hell, I can buy the giant cane toad interpretation a lot easier than a big tentacle.

3) "The fireworks suggest there's a force coming up from the ground"
If something at ground level explodes, no matter what it is, it will appear that the force/fire/debris is all headed upward because the ground will impede or block any downward motion. So naturally it looks like the force is all upward. So yes, there is an explosion moving upward into the atmosphere but that's what we would see if anything blew up.

4) The earthquake is a result of the island/monster rising.
I can't argue with the notion that if the island of Manhattan suddenly decided to get up and walk around it might feel like an earthquake to those living on it. Of course, if a skyscraper-sized "traditional" monster came stomping ashore that might shake things up, too. Stomping LSU fans at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge once caused a measurable seizmic event on their Geology Department's Richter meters. How much more shaking would something the size of a walking skyscraper cause? Also, does "Monst-hattan" not respirate or have a pulse of some kind? Wouldn't those motions have been detected over the centuries?

5) "It's alive! refers to the island of Manhattan itself"
The full line, subject to immense debate as we all know, is generally accepted to be "I saw it, it's alive, it's huge." OK. He saw what? Manhattan? What's huge? The island they're living on?
If you subscribe to the school that says the point of saying "It's alive" was to draw attention to the fact that something that was either an inanimate object or previously dead has now come to life, then this theory may have appeal. However, given the more "realistic" feel of this movie, and its location, I favor the notion that the line is there letting people know that its not a terrorist attack of some kind, but rather a rampaging critter.

6) "The area is formerly known as Central Park because there is no land left there"
As Euchre deftly pointed out, we have plenty of information that suggests the final scene involves Rob and Beth, with the camera, being buried by rubble under a bridge in Central Park. That doesn't suggest a "force coming upward", but rather, say, a big ol' foot coming downward. Also, the survivability of an electronic video camera in the most newly opened section of the Atlantic Ocean seems unlikely. Furthermore, if the island got up and walked away, what would be the point of mapping out "sites" on the ocean floor that corresponded to area's on the land mass/monster that used to be laying there? Why wouldn't the camera (and several billion dollars worth of buildings) all slide off the island/monster to its side into places no longer directly below where they formerly stood? In my opinion, this is his most absurd "evidence".

Of course, he offers no theories on why Manhattan-zilla quietly laid there through centuries of human occupation, including over a hundred years of massive construction (with a maze of subway tunnels. Ouch! Wouldn't those smart?). He offers no attempt at tying in his theories with the online backstory.

If he turns out to be right, I'll eat my hat. I'll buy the Collector's Edition DVD of his "rock opera", too. I'll fly to Manhattan (assuming it's not away on vacation) and watch his opera live. I'm sure it's great. Laughing

Great points on all accounts.

But about the Subway lines "but they were drilled through it's thick hide, so it never felt a thing!". Razz Of course if he's serious, he missed the fact that through it's 'rising up', no buildings are actually collapsing or falling from the sudden movement.

But that's beside the point, you guys are right it's just him trying to get attention for his rubbish rock opera.

I bet he'll be disappointed if ZootFly ever releases it's game, Time0, where two urban explorers wind up in a parallel New York which is actually a giant machine threatening to destroy our own New York. Razz

Reason 5
"It's Alive", huh?

My favorite part of this inane babbling is his so-called Reason #5 relating to the It's Alive! line.
"What's alive? The island of Manhattan is alive... and rising."

WTF?! If his freaking rock-opera was about a tampon rising out of the toilet, this "reason" would support it.
i.e. "What's alive? My girlfriend's nasty used tampon is alive... and rising."
Crude? Perhaps. But I bet people would actually watch that as opposed to his concept.

 [SELF PROMOTION]

This guy must be related to Gene Simmons, whom I used to think was the king of self-promoting poor ideas.

Hail the usurper.

I concur that it is BS on all levels...But..The line, "I saw it! It's Huge! It's alive!" all make sense...The guy saw a huge tentacle...I'm sure that at that time they didn't know it was part of the city...

Still, I'm hitting my button...

Someone needs to pass that guy the bit of wisdom I heard from someone I once worked with:
