How small scale can an ARG be?

I've gotten most of the background work for an ARG i'm planning on doing but I have one severe question.

Can I run it off of just a few websites? I'm think Youtube, blogspot, and various email accounts, maybe even flickr once I learn how to do stegged images and such.

Is this feasible?

Answer: YES.

Some ARGs have been run entirely on one or two websites: I Love Bees and Last Call Poker, for example. Other smaller games have also been run on just a handful of accounts: Maddison Atkins, for instance.

As long as you are dedicated to your playerbase and have a story to tell (and you plan ahead), you should use whatever resources you want to tell your story. And if that's just one website, a YouTube account and a few email addresses, so be it. Smile

Yes, it has been done (quite well, I'll add). With Gabriel Lawson/Prophecy Of Stars, the PM ran it off of WeeMe, Blogspot, and Weebly (free webpages!)

I spent a grand total of $0 on my last game, and it turned out to be pretty successful. It was actually played entirely on MySpace and MySpace IM.

My first game that I created (although with very little future planning which I now regret) cost nothing and I think it was an enjoyable experience, besides a couple slip ups and comparisons to Adam Worsley.

Basically you don't need money to do something artistic and original. I admit some ideas DO need a domain site such as doing something that takes a lot of space that a wordpress/freewebs just couldn't handle. I have seen some great things done with freewebs as of late so if you know good HTML and web design you can do a lot and once you run out of space on one account, sneakily incorporate it to another freewebs page.

My game mostly used IM and MySpace but the new project that I'm about to ask help for hopefully will broaden those horizons.
