[possible campaign] WALL-E

So, Disney/Pixar's next big summer blockbuster is a sci-fi epic entitled "Wall-E." It hits theaters next year. I have reason to believ that something ARGish is happening.

In the video game adaptation of the current Pixar moneymaker Ratatouille (see it, it's awesome), there's an unlockable video set in the WALL-E continuity- not set up as a teaser trailer- that acts as an advertisement for a line of robots manufactured by a corporation called "BuyNLarge." This video can be seen here.

The video states nothing about the movie itself, release dates, etc. This raised a few flags to me. Also, the very end contains a link to BuyNLarge's web site- www.buynlarge.com.

That site just went up today. It contains a video from a live actor extolling BuyNlarge's virtues. Nothing here mentions the film it promotes, and there is nothing CGI about it. There's no mentions of Disney and Pixar. In short, it looks like a real generic corporate website, with a futuristic and satirical twist. It also promises that more will come July 13th.

It seems really fishy to me. Why would Disney do this kind of marketing for one of its animated movies? Granted, WALL-E is going to be different- the first third will be nearly completely silent and the whole thing has a satiric edge that will fly over the heads of children. Could Disney be trying to capture the attention of a different audience?

More about WALL-E. Caution- SPOILERS.

interesting... will keep an eye on this one. Likely it'll turn into an extended experience, but so far the signs are good as you say, with no self-referencing...

Well I'm a Disney/Pixar fan anyway. I'm going to keep an eye on it too. It does sound like a new direction for them; especially after reading the spoilers.

Wow. I read the article, and I am really excited for this movie. In my opinion, Cars, with its predictable plot and stereotypical characters, was a step down from The Incredibles. (I haven't seen Ratatouille yet.)

This looks good.

And a possible extended reality/ARG to go with it? Sign me up. Smile

The robot is adorable.

That in and of itself is enough to get me to watch this for developments.

I guess we'll all have to wait until July 13th.

Pixar is so wonderful. Very Happy I'm looking forward to seeing what they have in mind with this. At the very least, another great movie, and possibly more? *cheers*

A Pixar ARG/extended experience sounds really neat. I hope they pull this off well.

Hello. I am new to the forums, and somewhat new to the ARG scene, but this topic seemed very interesting.

On the http://www.buynlarge.com website, did anyone else notice the saying of media and retail in the reverse order they were listed? Assuming the ARG possibilities of this whole ordeal to be true, this could be a very obvious early clue to some sort of puzzle, could it not?

Knowing just a little bit about these internet puzzles, my first instinct was to check the source code for the BuyNLarge site. With the media/retail mixup in mind, one url stood out from code.

Code:
if(gotFlash){
   var deeplink=location.search.substring(1,location.search.length);
   flashObj=new FlashObj("http://a.dolimg.com/media/en-US/buynlarge/bnlcs_pv1.swf",
        "800","500","#FFFFFF","","",deeplink,"","","noscale");
   flashObj.render();

A truncation of the url http://a.dolimg.com/media/en-US/buynlarge/bnlcs_pv1.swf to http://a.dolimg.com quickly proved the BuyNLarge site's connection to Disney, showing this text

Quote:

I tried replacing the "media" in the url with "retail", and just generally messed around with the url, but to no avail.

These are just some very scattered first thoughts on the possibility of the game and my first impression of it all.

Any others?

Good thinking. something.dolimg.com is probably just an online media server fro Disney. The if(gotFlash)... is basically saying "If you have Flash installed load the video - else, say you need flash".

It would make sense for Disney to do their marketing in-house.

changed

I've been following the site too, and it now says 25th instead of 13th. If you scroll over the "25th" you get a generic corporate message about the date changing. Check it out, tell your thoughts.

sweet

see this in the meta?

meta name="Keywords" content="buy n large,utility and power,highly efficient metrics,cross-media convergence,frictionless marketplaces,initiative systems,biotech,industrial">

media convergence? i hope they converge it before the 25. speaking of if you read the disclaimer towards the bottom it says they "can" use the coming soon cliche to "track trends and market process" so it could just be good ol' big brother disney experimenting? either way this looks flippin sweet....

A strange thought occured to me when I checked out the changed 'launch date' for the new site...

Buy'n'Large is incompetent (we know that from the preview article). Is it possible that these constantly extended 'launch dates' are just a funny way of showing the incompetence of BNL? (Eg. That BNL can't get anything done on time [Ex. The cleanup of Earth--see the preview article.])

However, the movie that popped up on the site recently seems to indicate that there is something deeper here than a joke. Anybody notice anything strange with the video?
