[SPEC] Cloverfield = Real Ghostbusters Episode?
Who ya gonna call?

Seriously though. I'm a very big fan of Ghostbusters, and I don't know why I didn't think of it just now. I was reading something about how Coney Island plays into Cloverfield, and then it hit me.

There is an episode of The Real Ghostbusters ("The Collect Call of Cathulhu") in which a group of cultists steal the Necronomicon and summon Cthulhu from the depths... guess where at?

Coney Island.

Watch the Episode:

Script:

Coney Island. Little baby monster spawn running around, causing trouble. Giant monsters. Right... it's a long stretch, I know. *shrugs* Just mentioning it as a possible influence on Cloverfield's, er, "writing." It's very similar. Someone else in another thread mentioned The Beast from 20,000 Leagues, so maybe this episode of Real Ghostbusters is an homage to both that movie and Lovecraft, and Cloverfield is giving a nod to it as well.

Well, not originally. I was just making the comparison between that episode of the Real Ghostbusters and the movie Cloverfield, but apparently it seems there's an even deeper connection, which the cartoon itself is based on (along with Lovecraft): The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

However, now that you mention it... that seems like the type of unimaginative sort of thing he'd do, isn't it?

Well, let's just say I wouldn't put it past him.

Ghostbusters and Cthulhu are both based on the paranormal. Having not yet seen the film, nothing in this has suggested the monster is paranormal - just something extraordinary, as in science fiction.

That's true, they're both based on the paranormal, and there's nothing to indicate that Cloverfield is paranormal in origin. I was just pointing out the similarity of certain plot elements from the cartoon (a big monster which comes out of the ocean in New York, little bitty monsters running around, Coney Island), but as someone else pointed out in another thread, those plot elements are an homage to an even earlier work, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. While I'm not claiming there's a serious connection, there are definite similarities in a few of the plot elements. Note also that Abram's previous works have been known to blend the science fiction and supernatural genres together. Just something to keep in mind.

good point matt, i too remember that episode, which is one of my fav episodes from the series. as for clover's origin, i'm leaning towards a more paranormal type origin, only cuz his face is said to have some humanlike features, which is generally true about demons etc. but who knows?

Heh, interesting theory... although from the accounts that the Coney Island scenes in the movie were for flashbacks, a simple coincidence. Smile

As for having a human-like face? Doesn't rule out mutation.

Matt, you are my new hero (for the day anyway). The Real Ghostbusters was perhaps the best cartoon of my entire childhood. I saw your link and watched the whole episode straight through. Sure I'm at work, but hey, some things are worth getting canned.

I think the reason for the Coney Island flashback is homage to The Beast From 20000 Fathoms.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The flashback scene where they are enjoying ConeyIsland could have taken place anywhere they wanted to have thier special day together. I also think that it was at the end of the movie because that is when the CI scene was at the end of the Beast. The Beast was the direct influence on the original Godzilla which was the direct reason for JJs idea to do this movie. So that is the bandwagon I am jumping on. It was an homage to that movie.
