[META] [DK]dark knight updates
new threads?

I am just wondering why the Dark Knight players aren't starting new threads for updates? I know there were a ton of updates on Friday, one on Saturday and then the Tuesday things. But when I came to the board to find out about them, they all seem to be continuing in existing threads. If I hadn't known that the updates happened from friends, I wouldn't have been able to tell from looking at the forums.

I am not sure why this all seems to be in one or two threads?

Can we please start new threads labeled [UPDATE] for updates instead of continuing to post in just one thread?

I know it would make it easier for me to follow. I think it would also help to let other players know that this game has a great deal happening right now. People who were waiting for the pre-game to end might not know that the game has taken off, in a major way, with lots of updates, etc.

If there is a reason to not start new threads for updates, I would appreciate knowing what it is.

Thanks.

Personal opinion time: it's because there isn't a dedicated forum, and [DK] is still stuck in "Potential" mode. (not that this is a bad thing, it might be entirely appropriate)

With space being tight and shared with other games, a game which proceeds in a linear fashion is best discussed in a single chronological thread. This makes it *easier* to find updates (as they are limited to only a few top threads) as well as keep the story organized, since it isn't shuffled out of order on the whim of a random reply to an older "update".

A more complex game might have multiple threads to continue discussion about various competing plot points running in parallel. That is the time to create a dedicated forum. However, from what I've heard of [DK], it is mostly a linear series of tasks. I suppose what you'd like to see is a new thread started for a new task -- a reasonable request -- rather than reading every post which bumps a thread to the top, only to find it's just old news.

This seems like the kind of issue that players work out on a game-by-game basis, rather than following any guidelines. I guess natural evolution will work it out.

I think we all got used to the linear movement of the campaign. There was one portion from the Comic Con. And that continued until the whysoserious.com website changed just before Halloween.

Then it worked pretty linearly from there. Yes, new sites were found but it all lead back to whysoserious.com extensions with the activities and puzzles.

Personally? I liked that I could just open the one thread and follow along rather than watching multiple threads pop up (ala another topic that has more noise:signal than anything I've ever seen in uF).

So I give kudos to the DK players for keeping it all in one place!

Edit: Should this thread also have a [DK] tag?

yeah, I'd like to see it exlode into numerous threads, but so far it has been almost entirely linear... even when I began this thread, spacebass wondered why I did Wink

While it's linear, the campaign does seem to come in bursts, and as rose said, rather than having to wade through a huge thread to find any major 'milestone' moments or detailed info, I like to see these bursts begin in their own threads.

There was Comic-Con, Whysoserious and Halloween, and just now the arc that seemed to spawn from the Gotham Times... that's a lot of stuff for one thread, sprad out over half a year. At this point there's not really enough activity on UF to warrant its own forum, but it's definitely more than 'news & rumors', so a couple threads in CFwP is a nice middle ground, IMO.

Specific information might be hard to locate in the latest thread, but then there's the wiki and various blogs and resources that split all that out. The process is linear, so reading through the thread at least should describe the events in an understandable fashion.

Being in another lull now that the cake stuff is done (depending on how long this 'break' is) I would recommend a new thread in the new year once things start up again.

Oops. I didn't think I neededto use [DK] when the title of the thread itself is DK? I will change it.

As I said, I find it much harder to follow a game where a lot is happening when there aren't new threads for updates. Putting it all in one or two threads seems to me to be a recipe for lessening the player involvement.

I'm not sure how games are supposed to move into their own subforum. I thought it was based on the amount of player interest, which included number of threads.

I dunno, SpaceBass or any other admin has never said anything to me, that I can recall anyway, about keeping the number of threads down in potentials. I guess it has been a long time since I actively played a game that was located in this part of the forum.

I didn't create new discussions because I thought it might be overwhelming to look at. There's at least 15 in game sites now, and seeing each with a thread of its own would intimidate me quite a bit. And almost all of those sites really had very little to them, so it was sort of nice to be able to follow it all in one thread rather than jump around.

Just personal preference.

I think it is possible to organize update threads by date, it doesn't have to be one thread per website -although that would work too. I guess you can't be sure how deep the update will be on any given day, or if more updates to one site will happen.

I'm not sure why starting a thread [UPDATE] and posting the update in that thread doesn't work. I think that we use an update tag in new threads when needed so that updates are easy to find on the forum.

Hard about that is [UPDATE] then becomes old news but no one ever changes the tag.

Look at Red Monday - it still has a tag of "New Game" and yet isn't the ARG over now?

I like it when the [UPDATE] includes the date of the start of the thread.

Well, just to throw my 2 cents in, I like when it's split up into multiple threads.

Even though it is liner, a huge thread is almost daunting to read. If I get feeling that a thread will take a long time to read and catch up, then I just won't read it. Call it laziness or ADD, but it's just kind of my stand on it.

Also, there're a ton of other things set up outside of WhySoSerious, such as the We Are The Answer page among others. I don't enjoy sifting through pages and pages of Joker Stuff to find out about corrupt cops and vice versa.
Again...just my opinion. I welcome multiple threads.

I know that I'm a relatively new person around these boards, but at what point does it become pertinent to branch an ARG off into its own category? It seems like TDK is just starting to take off (what with the cell phone distribution) and there are more than enough sites associated with the game to warrant multiple threads.

Heck, it even has it's own wiki Smile
