 writer's guild strike

I'm not sure where to put this. Does anyone know if the writer's guild strike is going to cause a lack of trailheads?

It shouldn't, as the writers for ARGs aren't (typically) part of the writers' guild, or at least most of them aren't.

But if there are any TV or film-related games in development, it could have a slight impact. At least, that's what I've seen. Or heard. Or.....nevermind. Razz

I'm hearing slightly different news, but not substantially so.

I'm catching wind that the WGA makes the argument that fiction writing online, even if done by a WGA member, is still covered by the strike IF it is associated with a guild-covered production.

On the other hand, just because your WGA member doesn't mean you can't do ANY work ... you just can't do any work for the guild agreement signatories. So many of those same WGA members are starting experiment with theater and online (as long as it doesn't have a film or television componant, they can do it even if the guild isn't thrilled about it.)

So you might actually get alot more WGA members writing for the web, but not have as much online fiction to interlock with the televisions shows that have all stopped production.

Of course, this is a Hollywood strike ... last week, we were hearing about how close they were to a settlement, and this week we hear how neither party is serious about negotiations.

We have a "Troll" tag? When did we get a "Troll" tag? That's awesome.

(I love Jack -- especially in his cameo on 30 Rock)

You don't want the troll tag. It's what the account gets when the TOS are broken so bad punishment is involved.

What's more - PLEASE DON'T FEED THE TROLLS (is a request to not respond to anything they post). Wink

We now take you back to your regularly scheduled thread about the Writer's Strike and potential affect on ARGs.

I see that Daily Show and the Colbert Report are going to come back on air with new shows early next year (without their writers). How are they going to do that? Ad lib everything?

I can't believe I'm finding threads by following a tantrum around uF.

I was hearing TDS/CR hope to get back their writers by breaking away from the conglomerates and negotiating contracts just for their writers. I just can't see any other way for them to do it. Well, unless they do like 2 episodes a week. Especially, since all of the corespondents are credited as writers and, I presume WGA members.

As for the original question, ARGish things that exist to promote WGA written projects will certainly decrease - they won't have people to write them and they won't know how to promote something with an uncertain future.

On the other hand, there are now a whole lot of talented writers who are not able to work in movies and TV, at least not in a traditional way. There is, however, nothing that prevents the writers from joining/starting "new media" ventures (and we are hearing more and more about such things.) There is a colorable argument that this strike will be a great boon for the traditional alternative writing projects (novels, comic books, etc.) and might just be the catalyst the newer stuff (podcasts, IPTV, ARG, etc.) needs to find critical mass. (And yes, I now realize Brian said most of this already. This post is not a significant source of new material.)
