Jericho and Tooman - TV connections for non-Rangers
How the two connect for those who don't watch the show

A handful of you may not watch the show, so here's a topic to discuss show tie ins and themes, etc. Additional general information for those who are interested. (The more rabid fans refer to themselves as Rangers, if you're wondering...) Season 2 starts Feb 12th on CBS (YAY)

The Attack

  • According to episode "A.K.A.", the attacks destroyed twenty-three major American cities. After the Soviet Union fell, neglected military and the satellite republics started selling their nuclear stockpiles on the black market. So the Central Intelligence Agency started an operation; "Project Red Bell". The objective of the project was to obtain that material by any and all means necessary, but a few years before the events of the series a shipment disappeared on its way to the Department of Energy storage compound in Oak Ridge.

  • Those warheads were converted into twenty-five 20-kiloton devices, which were disseminated to extremist cells active within the United States. It was a cross-section of "domestic militia, anarchists, and religious fanatics" — terrorist groups that would never ordinarily collaborate, ideologically or politically. The only thing that connected them was the desire to take down the federal government of the United States. The entire plan was orchestrated by someone with deep resources, an ability to coordinate diverse groups, and by all indications, an American.

  • As described in the episode "The Day Before", the attacks were to take place simultaneously, using the 20-kiloton nuclear devices hidden in 55-gallon oil drums, at 8:05 p.m. EDT, during the U.S. President's emergency address to Congress on Tuesday, September 19.

  • Darcy, the wife of the Robert Hawkins character, states in the episode "Casus Belli" that 30 million people were killed outright in the attacks.

  • Cities attacked: Atlanta, Georgia; Baltimore, Maryland; Boston, Massachusetts; Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois ; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Detroit, Michigan ; Hartford, Connecticut; Houston, Texas ; Indianapolis, Indiana; Lawrence, Kansas; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Phoenix, Arizona ; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; St. George or Cedar City, Utah; San Diego, California; San Francisco, California; Seattle, Washington; Washington, D.C.

  • Unconfirmed Status
    • Cincinnati, OH
    • Kansas City, Missouri (some report of a mushroom cloud, unconfirmed)
    • New Orleans, Louisiana
    • St. Louis, Missouri

  • Reported Surviving
    • Columbus, Ohio
    • Las Vegas, Nevada
    • Lexington, Kentucky
    • McCook, Nebraska
    • New York City, New York (the terrorists here were caught before the device could be detonated)
    • Richmond, Virginia
    • Tallahassee, Florida
    • Topeka, Kansas (FEMA HQ attacked by unknown source)
    • Cheyenne, Wyoming

  • Regional Capitals
    • Rome, New York
    • Columbus, Ohio - The fake Marines in "Semper Fidelis" say that Columbus has become the new U.S. capital, but they later admit that what they said was based only on rumors.
    • Montgomery, Alabama
    • San Antonio, Texas
    • Cheyenne, Wyoming - Possibly the capital of the new Allied States of America, this would knock Sacramento off the regional capital list, at least for the region of the old USA that the ASA now inhabits.
    • Sacramento, California

    Response and Retaliation
    • FEMA successfully set up camps near blast zones for survivors - all with varying conditions. At least one had a riot over food that overpowered the marine guards and destroyed the camp.
    • ICBMs are seen in the sky after the return of electricity in Jericho. Their intended target is unknown.
    • After the ICBM launched (within minutes), an explosion was seen in the sky over Jericho as an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) was fired that disabled all electronics.
    • Jericho (and presumably others) receive drops of food an supplies from aircraft accompanied by Russian made fighter jets. The one Jericho receives has a message with it: "Do not fight... China is your friend." It should be noted that one of the TV signals Jericho received briefly was Chinese coverage of the attacks on America. (Untranslated as far as I know). Food drops are also received by Germany in neighboring areas.

Locations

Jericho, KS

  • It is described as being located in the fictitious "Fillmore County", east of Denver, Colorado, close to the Colorado border. In episode 22, Why We Fight, Robert Hawkins accesses coordinates 39°06′38.36″N, 99°27′17″W which place Jericho a few miles north of Hays, Kansas; and the Heather Lisinski character finally establishes in dialogue that Jericho is in "Kansas, not far from the Colorado border."
  • According to "A.K.A", since the 1950s the United States Department of Defense has been doing map projections that display fall out scenarios in the event of a nuclear attack on twenty U.S. cities. Jericho is located outside the fallout zones. In addition, it has a salt mine, plenty of farm land, and access to an untainted water table. This is the reason Robert Hawkins moved his family there.

  • In the third episode, Jericho's mayor mentions that Goodland, a town southwest of Jericho, has a National Guard unit and alludes that tanks seen driving on the interstate might have been of that unit. While Goodland, Kansas is the actual home to a National Guard unit, it is a small, maintenance company and does not have M1A1 Abrams Main Battle tanks, M109A6 155MM Self-Propelled Howitzers, nor M2A2 Bradleys, which are the only 'tank-like' vehicles the Kansas Army National Guard uses. Goodland is the home of Det 1 170th Maint Co (UIC: VHHA1). Since this unit is a detachment, the size of the unit would roughly equal a platoon (40-60 soliders)

New Bern, KS
  • New Bern is a city near Jericho. The town manager is Phil Constantino, who is also the sheriff. New Bern's land is mostly clay, so its citizens have no way of growing crops.

  • Many buildings in the town, including the city hall, were heavily damaged by the Ravenwood paramilitary group, an attack residents blame on Jericho's having successfully repelled Ravenwood some time earlier. Residents have been told that Jericho is hoarding supplies.

  • Hostilities between New Bern and Jericho increase after New Bern attacks Jericho with mortars in an attempt to annex several of Jericho's outlying farms. The situation escalates, and in the season finale, New Bern launches a full assault on Jericho.

Connections

Ravenwood
  • These are definitely not the good guys

  • Ravenwood is a fictional private military company in the Jericho universe, first appearing in the season one episode "Rogue River". The organization is hired by the United States government to assist in evacuation procedures following the nuclear attacks, a move attributed to insufficient numbers of National Guard troops. However, the Ravenwood mercenaries sent to help in Rogue River instead loot the town's medical supplies and murder unmovable patients at the town's hospital. They later attempt to enter Jericho, but when that fails they instead attack New Bern. Members include Goetz, a squad leader, and Randy Payton, a soldier.

  • Jake Green, one of the main characters, used to work with a contract military group in Iraq and "knew a lot of Ravenwood guys". He didn't like them then - it is somewhat implied that they were brutal in their tactics. It is later revealed in the episode The Day Before that the FBI has flagged Jake's passport for non-cooperation on an undercover mission against a private military company, a splinter of Ravenwood.

  • Randy Payton rebelled against his fellows in Rogue River to try to defend the doctors from the Ravenwood massacre - he is presumed killed when he stays behind to give cover fire for the Jericho residents heading home with their medicine

Jennings and Rall
  • Confirmed 3rd episode title of Season 2

-----

People

Trish Merrick
  • Confirmed Season 2 character spanning several episodes

Goetz
  • The leader of the Ravenwood mercenaries. Jake and Eric first encounter Goetz at the Fillmore County Hospital in "Rogue River". Goetz and his men follow Jake and Eric back to Jericho with the hope of forcing Jericho into surrendering supplies and fuel. In the next episode "Crossroads", Goetz and Jake face off on the bridge leading into town, with Goetz eventually capitulating and leading his men away with the ominous threat: "You know, things are gonna get back to normal someday. The government will put itself back together. They'll want to help all you get back on your feet. And you know who they're gonna send to help you? Me."

  • In Season Two he is sent back to Jericho by Valente.

Thomas Valente
  • Department of Homeland Security — Project Red Bell supervisor. Hawkins suspects that he actually may be the chief person responsible for the nuclear attacks upon the United States. Valente and Sarah were both seen talking together, suggesting that the pair were secretly conspiring from within the CIA. Hawkins also recognizes him trying to buy a nuclear drum from a satellite camera. In the season finale, it is shown that he is associated with the reconstruction of the federal government in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

  • It is logical to assume that Valente has some ties with the command of Ravenwood, due to their connection with Cheyenne's rebuilding.

  • He has declared Hawkins a High Profile Terrorist

Robert Hawkins

  • Hawkins is huge when it comes to the conspiracy, so his page is a good read

  • He has a "package" buried under his tool shed, presumed to be an undelivered bomb, probably nuclear.

  • He is often seen logging into a secret website via his laptop, which has proven immune to the EMP that was released a few days after the Nuclear explosions. He also has come into possession of a cellphone that has a straight uplink to message with his superior, presumed to be Valente.

  • Hawkins also can use his laptop to access a satellite for various information, usually to do with protecting Jericho, notably by locating the position of New Bern troops. The laptop has been identified as Panasonic Toughbook.

  • Though his position is somewhat unknown, it seems that Hawkins has rebelled against his employer and refused to deliver his package, which was supposed to be delivered to Columbus, OH.

Project Red Bell

Overview
After the Soviet Union fell, neglected military and the satellite republics started selling their nuclear weapons stockpiles on the black market. So the Central Intelligence Agency started Project Red Bell. The objective of the project was to get that material by any and all means necessary, but a few years before the series began a shipment disappeared on its way to the Department of Energy storage compound in Oak Ridge.

Those warheads were converted into 25 small high-yield devices, which were disseminated to extremist cells active within the United States. It was a cross-section of domestic militia, anarchists, and religious fanatics; terrorist groups that would never collaborate ideologically or politically. The only thing that connected them was the desire to take down the federal government of the United States. The entire plan was orchestrated by someone with deep resources, an ability to coordinate diverse groups, and by all indications he's an American.

Project Red Bell was supervised by Thomas Valente, the head of the Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office.

History

Needing an intelligence officer with experience in the field of undercover work, Valente recruited Victor Miller to bring Robert Hawkins out of retirement. Hawkins, along with Sarah Mason, were able to infiltrate one of the cells and gain access to several of the nuclear weapons. The team soon located other cells and were poised to stop the plan before it came to fruition. However, in the event they should fail, then the team would rendezvous at Jericho, Kansas.

Unfortunately, someone tipped off the terrorists about the government's knowledge of the plot, so they moved up the timetable for the attacks. Though Hawkins was able to intercept the bomb heading for Columbus, Ohio and the New York Police Department stopped the bomb in New York City, attempts to stop the bombs in other cities failed and 23 nuclear bombs went off, destroying each of their targets and throwing the entire country into chaos.

The attacks took place simultaneously, using twenty kiloton nuclear devices hidden in 55 gallon oil drums, at 8:05 p.m. EDT, during the President's emergency address to the United States Congress on Tuesday, September 19.

The terrorists then located and killed half of the Red Bell team along with their families. However, the other half and several others escaped and Hawkins, Mason and Miller successfully made it to Jericho (though Miller died of radiation sickness shortly after arrival).

Valente had also survived the attacks, and was discovered helping the now President Tomarchio to re-establish the government in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This government has been challenged by five others, and Valente hopes to get their government the advantage by buying surviving nuclear weapons from survivors and bandits in the wasteland. Unfortunately, Hawkins found out by using satellite tracking and discovered Valente's activities, realizing he was the mastermind of the attacks all along, providing the terrorists the information concerning Red Bell and its members to allow the terrorists to kill the team members.

Misc

  • Each Jericho episode begins with a splash screen and Morse Code. The Code usually contains a hint or a teaser regarding either the episode or the Universe in general Robert Hawkins, also, has received several messages in Morse.

  • Before the EMP hit, the electricity came back briefly. During this time, it was discovered that all IPs are blocked on the internet service. Hawkins gets around the IP block by use of a portable satellite transceiver and a series of codes into seemingly impassable pages. One such code came from what appeared to be an American Express Centurion card.

    • Charge card - Robert Hawkins' charge card resembles an American Express Centurion Card, except it says "America" instead of "American". The card number is 5732 077651 79032, CCN: 0965, with an expiration date of November, 2008. When read upside down, the card number could be read as "ZE06L TS9LLO ZELS". It isn't clear what Hawkins was looking at when he read the card upside down, since the ID that he enters at the prompt is "*7oij9r" (the first character could be an "8" or a "B").

    • Webpage - Hawkins accesses a webpage with a password on his credit card. This site resembles the Turkish MSN web site. The text that is visible on the page to be a mix of Cyrillic characters and an unspecified Turkish dialect. Analysis of a screen capture reveals the following:

      • Two words appear in large bold Cyrillic within the text of the page: ЧК (the Cyrillic letters "che" and "ka"; the Cheka was the Russian secret police formed by Lenin in 1917; ВЕСТОЧКА (translated "message")

      • A Turkish banner appears at the top of the page; it reads in part, "Kişisel Bilgilerinizi Koruyun!", which translates to "Protect Your Personal Information!".

      • Another section on the right side of the web page reads "Haftanın Güzeli: Renata Ramos" which translates as "Beauty of the Week: Renata Ramos".

      • Another section reads as a section dedicated to MSN Messenger, and has a set of four bulleted links. The third link refers to accessing web camera Messenger connections.

    • IP addresses: It also should be noted that near the beginning of the episode, Skylar Stevens attempts to access the internet on a laptop at a cafe, and tries an IP address, which appears to be 827.750.304.001. The IP address is invalid, as three fields go above the 255 limit. This may be to provide Hollywood-safe IP's, much in the way they use 555 as the prefix for phone numbers and fictitious domain names.

    • At the end of the episode Robert Hawkins appears to be accessing an internet server with an IP address whose first three octets are 29.203.38 and the last is not shown. The IP block of 29.0.0.0 - 29.255.255.255 is owned by the Defense Information Systems Agency, an agency of the Department of Defense according to ICANN

If any fellow viewers want to add anything, let me know so I can paste it in. This is by no means terribly comprehensive, as I just threw it together with a lot of help from Wikipedia and the Jericho fans that have kept those pages up to date. See also teh Jericho wiki! http://jerichowiki.cbs.com/
