Double post out of Neccesity:

Sent the message to bobby:

Bobby,

Falthis has cheated. He did not follow the rules and tell him he has not won because of it. His riddle did not follow the rules that we had established for making the riddles. He was supposed to use a " SINGLE riddle, cypher or puzzle" to get the riddle we had to go through a cypher first. An easy one, but still a cypher. Also, as of the rules, he never gave us a method by which to solve his riddle as we did for ours. " there must be either a title or explanation as to the general nature of the challenge, i.e. cypher, word search, etc."

Therefore, I demand that his victory is nulled and the competition must continue.

~Enoch~

I just got a reply:

I believe you may have a point there. I will speak with Falthis and let you know

Meta, you may not be dead, I know me majoring in law and politics would help me somewhere. Im not completley useless! Give me time and I will pull through, lol.

Ditto here.

(And if Falthis still claims a victory, well . . . if he wants to get to Metatron, he's gonna have to go through Jimmy the Geek first! Twisted Evil )

I dont think it is lazy PMing. It kinda seems in character to me. A demon or devil would find any excuse to cheat, and if you don't call them on it, then it is your loss... for example Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey anyone?

nextday, thats what i was saying when i was talking to gideon last night. I think that the PMs are trying to stay in character.

Anyway, email from BS:
Quote:
After an all night debate between him and myself, Falthis has decided to as he puts it "Let them slip by on this one." He wanted me to give this message to you.

"You make me proud. Such devious rules mongering is very rare from your ilk. Now we get serious. Better make your next challenge a good one because if you have to face my next challenge I guarantee you to fail and it will be within the "rules" that have been set."

So there you have it. Falthis must have been feeling abnormally generous, or maybe there is something else. Who knows? Good news is you have another chance! Make it count. I will expect your return challenge by Sunday at Midnight CST. Normally it is done in the same day, but in this case with the discussion of rules I will allow you some time to prepare your challenge.

That's an interesting turn of events.
I suspect that it means that on a meta-level, Falthis' puzzle was flawed (beyond just being in violation by incorporating multiple methods).

Has anyone successfully "back-solved" Falthis' challenge?

I have not, though I see how it could have worked and can't quite see how we were to arrive at "meet", specifically.

I'm forwarding the "unzipped" text file for my challenge to sylvia to have her playtest it and comment on whether it adheres to the rules.

It's not right to have you all acccept something which hasn't been vetted as a "solvable" challenge representative of the group as a whole. But frankly, I don't wanna just put the answer out there where it could easily be made available to "Falthis".

If sylvia wants to share it with others of the group via IM, that's okay by me. And then you can decide whether to use it.

I still think ENIGMA is our best bet, really.

my analysis
sorry for taking so long but I was needed elsewhere

Ok, to completely understand exactly what has happened and what to expect, I went back and reviewed everything. That is, after I helped a young man set up the new telescope he got for Christmas.

This is where we first hear about the challenge. http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=435689#435689
Bobby wrote:
I believe my plan for Falthis is working. Falthis is a demon who enjoys gambling and I have taken full advantage of that to save Metatron.
Here is the deal we struck. Falthis has agreed to a contest of wits with the winner gaining rights to Metatron.

The rules are simple On December 17th Falthis will accept a SINGLE riddle, cypher or puzzle that only incorporates the space in ONE EMAIL, no muliple page hunts. If he can solve this problem within 3 days he will send the answer along with a problem of his own as a REPLY TO THE SAME EMAIL. You then have 3 days to solve his riddle as well. The contest will continue until someone takes longer than 3 days (that's 72 hours from the time the email is sent), the wrong answer is turned in, or one of the two sides gives up.

You should pick a speaker to be the person Falthis emails to. He will only accept the first email sent to him according to him, he doesn't understand the internet and will prefer to dwell in it as little as possible. This is the best I can do to protect Metatron. I will give you Falthis's contact December 16th

Then later this rule was added: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=437904#437904
Bobby wrote:
Falthis has chosen to use me as an intermediary, thinking that it will give him an advantage. Your challenge will be sent to my email address, Falthis will peruse it and either surrender or respond within 3 days from the time the mail was sent. The challenge cannot be presented until AT LEAST midnight tonight. Although you are welcome to wait until anytime on the 17th if time holds a tactical advantage. Also one last thing Falthis has recently insisted that a new rule be added to the competition, there must be either a title or explanation as to the general nature of the challenge, i.e. cypher, word search, etc. I am not sure why he has done this, but it is the only demand he has made and I feel it in Metatron's best interest to honor it. I will await the email. Good Luck friends!

So, the first puzzle we sent to him: It had only one step to solve and was laid out so simple it should have been easy to solve. There was one minor error but even with that it should have been simple. The word length and sentence structure was even given. See this post for the puzzle http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=438173#438173

the answer was
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Hello Falthis, this is Enoch. I was elected to communicate with you.
You wanted to play, today is the day, you have three days to respond in this way.
Humans are smarter than demons and I was voted most likely to suck eggs in high school.

The last line of the code had a typo, an e instead of a d. The result would have been votee instead of voted.
Falthis's Answer wrote:
TWIST METHODICAL, MISS LOUT.
ONE HEFTY CHOCAHOLIC IS A WHEELIE NUT.
AUSTERELY EAT THY SEDATION IVY UP WHERE, NOWADAYS, TOOTHY DODOS HINT PAYDAY.
AH METHINKS LIMOS SHUNT LONG CARS AND REHEATED HOGS KNOW MYSTERIOUS MOIST CLEAVAGE.

Which is not the correct answer but followed the rule that was given.

Now for the challenge Falthis sent us.
If any of us knew anything about Shakespeare's era, we might have been able to get Meet from the statement Falthis gave us, but I doubt it.
Falthis wrote:
"The Answer is What Old Bill Would Consider John as Grey"

To solve the wingding thing took six steps to solve with no clue as to how to solve it. (two rules were broken right there)

Step 1: First we had to look through all those wingdings just to find the ones we should use from the ones we shouldn't use. I don't know about everyone else but that was hard for me.

Step 2: Translate the wingdings to numbers and letters.

Step 3: Translate the numbers to letters and the letters to numbers.

Step 4: Then unscramble with no clue to word length or sentence sturcture.

Step 5: If we could have gotten this far, answer the riddle which was Meat.

Step 6: Realize the correct answer was a homophone of Meat, being Meet, what Shakespeare would consider John (playing) as (Lady) Grey.

Personally, I believe if he can break all the rules then so can we. Maybe I'm more of a demon than an Angel.

See my next post on my analysis of Rogi's and Macavity's suggestions, as this post is getting too long.

lol, im liking this. Id also like to add in PM defense that my riddle had no answer... if you look at what we agreed on for rules, it says each sentence, not each line, is scrambled. Therefore, it was scrambled incorrectly.

But please keep going sylvia.
