Bravo. We just hit a mark. Now should we go back to the Tagruato tanker, or do we start a new thread enititled: "Military Response to GP's Appearance"?
Or maybe a thread has been made regarding this?If so, someone send me a link, plz?
eh, just let the thread flow... i mean, there are really only two popular theories about the tanker:
1] it was in the tanker
2] it followed the tanker
Nothing else really.

sometime in october is when it started i think... GREAT name though!
so im thinking the military knows about the monster because of radar and thats how they got there so quickly! BUT they didnt know it was going to be MGP they just saw a very large unidentified object in the water!
anyone with me
sorry a little OT but when someone said something about radar it made me think about that
You know what? That's brilliant. I think that might be the only proposed explanation for the immediate military arrival in New York thus far. It makes complete sense. A Sonar station detects an unidentified ship or object entering the harbor, and contacts the military. I'd assume warships are on the way too, but by the time they get there, MGP is out and about, roaming on the land.
You see, there's the flaw...
If it was something in the water, ground troops wouldn't be the prevalent force summoned. Nor would fighter jets. If the object shows up on sonar but not radar they'd pretty well know it's submerged - and there aren't a whole lot of underwater aircraft carriers. Submarines can't hardly carry a landing force either. Notice that in the new clip, the glimpse we see of the monster is NOT in fact during the military assault. It would appear the military manages to arrive after our friends have been in the bodega for a little while. I'm still with the idea that this is more likely a National Guard scramble of forces, or that maybe the military was on an elevated status because intelligence told them something about the events on Chuai station.

I mean, from what I gathered from the trailer is that the military know very little about what they're dealing with, and that Rob knows very little about what's going on.
Well, who expected a Godzilla pwning monster to rampage NYC? Military forces arn't trained to know or attack something like this. It's like the 9/11 attacks. No one knew who it was at first. Some people were blaming China to France!
Also,

Yeah, but I would like one on the military itself. Taggy's ship is getting old now.

I like the "previous intel idea." Maybe they didn't fully believe the intel at first. But 'ol GP comes along (Assuming it's as aged as an adult human or older) and starts tearing Lady Liberty. Probably something she said.

this is a movie though....
you could be right but when did they ever send in fighter jets?
and if you saw a massive blob on sonar(bigger than a sub) wouldnt you want to send in troops just in case?
Also after 9/11 i dont think the US would handle such a oddity so lightly

We really don't know how quick the military presence is there anymore... I mean, look at the interview with Matt Reed.
He basically debunked the dates on those pictures. So can we really go off the times anymore?
Buuuut if they were prompt in their arrival, then perhaps its because of 9/11? I mean, our security has been upped a few notches since then... I really wouldn't be surprised if they came as quickly as they did.

I didn't explain something just lightly implied in my train of thought...
If Grumpypants follows the ship, he would probably be missed on sonar because his sound signature would be coming from the same direction as the tanker, and as with radar you can 'hide behind' something large.
If Grumpypants is in the ship, it easily explains not catching him on radar or sonar. In BOTH cases though, previous intelligence about issues at Chuai, and the likely knowledge that a tanker is inbound from there, would explain the elevated status for the military. Intelligence is only so good, so chances are they could know there might be trouble but because of no solid evidence it wasn't an isolated incident they wouldn't be escorting the ship in or be otherwise preemptively responding.

hEY everyone, I made a new thread here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=438042#438042
to discuss military involvment only. Anyone else who wants to stay with the Taggy tanker can keep discussing about that here.

In the full trailer (not the teaser) they show 2 jets and a bomb blast.

I love how this takes place in post 9/11 America, yet mgp is coming into the new york harbor in a barrel from a foreign country. You're right, america wouldn't care what's in the tanker. Hell, let EVERYTHING in without inspecting!

Truth is, if the American government got the news a huge monster was making its way towards the west coast across the Pacific Ocean, they wouldn't let us know - they'd try to contain the threat before it reached the coast and keep the public blissfully unaware of the problem. Its not like the first thing they'd do would be to inform us. On the contrary, their instincts would be to deny and keep a lid on, even with a monster actually roaming the streets of NY, letting the newscasts speculate about more likely scenarios, like earthquakes, until it had gone so far there was absolutely no chance in hell this was gonna end even remotely well.
This for two obvious reasons - to avoid massive panic (which would be the official explanation) and to keep up appearances. See, it would be unlike the government to admit they are not above any situation that may arise, and a hard blow to their self-image as invincible. And to them, that would make America weak in the eyes of the rest of the world, and that would be devastating for the safety of the United States. *sigh*
Still doubting? Compare with 9/11. Was there any public reports of hijacked planes heading towards major cities? And with the initial news broadcasts of the plane hitting the towers, did they not still claim it was most likely an accident? Not until some time after the second plane hit did the authorities finally tell us what was really going on.
So as to how the monster waded into the harbor undetected - it didn't. No need to hide in no tanker.

Well since everyone denies that the explosion that happened in the trailer wasn't oil barrels, it's fairly plausible that it has laser blast eyes and can breathe petroleum gasoline. It obviously took out the sonar detectors that the navy uses attrediately.

Lurker Here,
Here are my 2 bits.
1. The tanker is listing and not capsized. (Could just be an error by the script writer but I doubt it as the Live shot of the tanker and the Heli's lighting it from above obviously prove that.)
2. Mr. GP is obviously very huge. The thought of "it" growing that large in just a few minutes is even too much for Uf and not remotely plausible to the "general" viewer who knows nothing before the movie. That would have to take quite a backstory.
3. Mr. GP obviously can walk. GP came from the water. Not saying he is a Hippo but Hippos sort of take a step and then glide for a bit. Not take a creature this large and imagine him "pushing" off the bottom for propulsion with one of his appendages and then gliding.
4. With the gliding theory happening not too much would even be noticed until GP hit the continental shelf. A creature that big will make earth shake on land but at those depths, water and resistance win.
5. I do think the tanker was "thrown" into the city as a fire that big would hurt any organic creature no matter what.
Sorry for the long post.

Don't be sorry, you made more sense than 99% of this forum that thinks that they would be a large beast inside of a steel drum...

The news would probably say capsized anyway, sounds more dramatic

I agree, although they seemed to get away with something similar in Alien.

Yep, very likely he walked along the sea bed if he's from the bottom of the ocean.
