Nice analysis.

So one question is, how far can we keep playing if we don't buy any of the card packs??? According to this FAQ each card has a unique one-time-use code, so these aren't really 'trading' cards. But clearly, the cards will unlock information that is necessary for the game, so without the cards, it seems you're kinda stuck.

And finally, I wonder if this game is really like a McDonald's promotion, in that the key to winning the grand prize will be that one Ultra-Rare card in that one card pack in the final set that will be released only in Dubuque, Iowa and nowhere else. Thus, you can have all the Clues and cards you want until then, but only the person getting that one special card will have a shot of winning.

EDIT: this website seems to have gotten (tiny) pictures of most of the cards released so far: http://www.39cluesworld.com/

EDIT2: Okay, I've been reading the information here: http://www.the39clues.com/info/rules

This all has to be taken with the big caveat that only participants between the ages of 6 and 14 are eligible, but I discovered that you don't have to actually purchase anything in order to get codes/cards (this is for US/Canada):

legalese on website wrote:
4. You Do Not Have to Buy Anything to Enter or Participate in the Contest. You can participate in the Contest without buying anything, by taking the following steps.

(a) Books: You can read each of the Books by borrowing them from your local library.

(b) Game Cards in Books:To get digital versions of the game Cards included in any Book in the series, send a self-addressed postage-stamped envelope with sufficient postage to: The 39 Clues Mail-In Entry, Book #___ (indicate the Book number you are requesting the Cards for) Title ____________ (indicate the title of the Book you are requesting the Cards for), 557 Broadway, New York, NY 10012. For each entry, please make sure to include your username and the e-mail address you used during registration (your e-mail if you are 13 or older; your parent's/legal guardian's e-mail if you're under 13). You will receive back the unique ID associated with the book Cards and, when you enter the unique ID online, the 6 Book Cards will be added to your online collection. Since each Book contains the same set of game Cards, there is a limit of one mail-in request for digitized Cards for each book. Digital versions of the game Cards included in any book will be available only after the Book is available in stores.

(c) Game Cards in Card Packs: To get digital versions of the game Cards included in a Card Pack, send a self-addressed postage-stamped envelope with sufficient postage to: The 39 Clues Card Pack Mail-In Entry for Books 1, 2, and 3, Scholastic Inc, 557 Broadway, New York, NY 10012. For each entry, please make sure to include your username and the e-mail address you used during registration (your e-mail if you are 13 or older; your parent's/legal guardian's e-mail if you're under 13). You will receive back 16 unique IDs associated with a particular Card Pack, and when you enter the unique IDs online, the 16 Cards will be added to your online collection. There will be 4 "waves" of Cards that will be distributed throughout the Contest Period. The Cards included in any pack will vary, with some Cards being very common and others being rare. There is no limit to the number of mail-in requests for digitized Cards in Card Packs, but there is a limit of one request per outer mailing envelope. Digital versions of the game Cards included in Card Packs will be available only after the Card Pack is available in stores.

So, all it takes is a SASE to get more codes, and you can even bombard them with SASEs to get all the cards in a given set.

And there are going to be (natch) 39 finalists after the last book:
Quote:
6. Determination of Finalists. At the end of the Contest Period, the 39 participants in both the United States and Canada who have earned the most points during Episode #10 and who have found each of the 39 Clues and assembled them to reveal their final secret will be the potential finalists in their applicable country.

The prize for being a Finalist is pretty dopey, though:
Quote:
(a) Finalists. Each finalist will receive a complete set of The 39 Clues book series.

And the final winner of $10,000 will be determined thusly:
Quote:
7. Determination of Winner. Each Contest Grand Prize winner will be determined from among the 39 finalists in his/her country in a skill-based elimination tournament from approximately February 15, 2011 through approximately March 9, 2011. The skill-based tournament will involve questions from each of the 10 books and other aspects of the Cahill world.

So memorize those Cahill facts!

Something else I found:

If you go to the Amazon page for Maze of Bones, there is a link to "Ian Kabra's Blog."

Just seems to be flavor/background, but interesting that it's there...

Audio Version

Has anyone tried the audio version? The box says it comes with "Exclusive Bonus Material...Secret surveillance tapes of Grace Cahill."

I just bought the book for my 7-year old, as well as the CD's. I thought the audio it might be helpful in case he wanted to re-read parts of the story. We have read two chapters of the book and solved one puzzle... very fun. I'm not sure if the audio version is worth it... ? I will probably open it because I'm curious!

So... these shared codes....
are there physical cards for them?

So these shareable cards from WAL-Mart, Borders, and Amazon... Are these virutal cards only? Or is it possible to get a physical card (one that I can hold in my hand)? If the later, how do I get them (I ordered my book from Amazon, but I didn't get a card).

Thanks

---
My surveillance camera codes are 22FC46MJX2 and 237DRWJJX2... use them and pass them on!

I was in Border's earlier today and I was able to pick up an actual physical card from the display they had there. I don't know about the other ones.

Thanks for the wiki link Bruce! I've also linked your wiki from my site and thanks to you I'm now only missing the screenshot for the back of card no. 9.

I've also edited your wiki card links (to 39clues articles) and you have 'em all now. (except for the 400s)

Smile thanks. I'm going to walmart today to pick up another pack.
*hooked*
and the next original set won't come out until book 4. heh.

The thing is, these can easily be trading cards. Once you've got them all, you can decide not to activate any of them, then trade them with other people. Or you could just value collecting them, whether or not they've been activated, and still trade towards full sets.

I'll bet there will be some who will aim to collect a full unactivated set, not just an activated full set. It's like collecting mint cards Smile a real collector wouldn't sell a full unactivated set to someone who will use them - it would devalue the cards Laughing

Well according to this FAQ:
Quote:
Will kids get duplicates?
Yes but unlike standard card games duplicate 39 CLUES cards still serve a purpose
online because each card has a unique code. Duplicates can be used creatively, yielding
different information, secrets and/or rewards each time.

I don't know what they mean by 'creatively,' but it sounds like there is some value in activating the duplicates.

yesyes, I know, but depending on how many cards people collect, eventually they may feel that having so many duplicates is pointless (especially with the common cards), or they may not feel they really want to play 'the game', and just focus on the cards... point being, there's definitely potential for tradeability here Smile

Well there are already a few auctions for cards up on Ebay. If you just want to collect, that works -- otherwise you have to hope that the code is still valid...

Okay, finally broke open the audio book and it is very well read and produced. If anyone else is considering it--I recommend. Haven't heard any extra surveillance tapes yet, but only a third of the way through so far. My son, the young Lucian, is really enjoying it.

The set of cards that came with the book and the audio all had the same two codes. When we entered the first one, the cards in that set appeared but we were unable to enter the same code again. Same thing with the audio (which were all duplicates of the book btw, just different code). Is that the way it is supposed to work?

yeah that's how it sounds. Each book's 6 cards have the same single code. So each book will have different codes to each other, but the 6 cards will have the same code.
The same 6 cards come with Book 1 (audiobook included) and in the faq they even say that you can buy multiple books, but you'll get the same 6 cards, and basically end up duplicating those same cards, so it's not necessary.
unless you like duplicates of course Smile
