If there's any attempt to make use of science at all, this creature must be an alien displaced to Earth. With any kind of conventional mass, the thing is going to be upwards of 10,000 tons or more. To move that mass as shown would require a material involving something like silicone and some novel kind of energy source. A dinosaur scaled up to 600 feet is going to be crushed by its own mass into a pile of dead hamburger and bone powder.

This thing must be made of incredible stuff running on more incredible energy. It would be extremely hot. But getting back to the weight, at that mass it's feet would easily punch down through the street floor and what's below (subways, tunnels, or earth/bedrock), so the height seen between the buildings may not measure the thing (and in fact the calves look too short as if disappearing into the ground surface).

Disclaimer: this speculation is worth less than you paid for it, and if the film is a war on all science like the "Star Wars" um, "stuff," then this does not apply.

It wasn't displaced on Earth, as the widget says "something has found us", implying it's beating the hell out of New York on purpose, not because it's cranky it's not on its home planet.

I agree that it is intelligent and deliberately attacking New York, and in fact I still suspect it made an attempt to throw the SOL head at Rob. The displaced point is that I don't think it could have originated on Earth--in any way. If I were inventing a backstory I'd say it came from a world vastly larger and more massive than Earth, thus bigger size and strength.

That's exactly what I wanted to say in some other words. I'll explain it quite easy, if you double the height of a cube, for example, you aren't doubling his weight, you are making it 8 times bigger. There's no linear correlation between height and weight when making things bigger. So at some point it becomes impossible for any creature in this planet to excede certain dimensions using any of the known organic large animals structures. And even if you had the material that could make it stand, big and fast are two things that don't get along too well in the animal kingdom.

I kinda got excited when reading this...

Incredible stuff running on more incredible energy...

Sweeeet.

If he was throwing the SoL head at rob, he missed by a couple blocks. He couldn't have intended to throw it at such an angle that it would bounce and land near rob.
You applied so much science about it collapsing and whatnot, but believe that the thing has such a grasping of physics as to know exactly how it would hit the building to land near rob? You can't have your cake and eat it too. It's either not going to abide by the laws of science (i'd rather it not) or this movie has to be 100% completely scientific (boring).

You mean the dimensions, but yeah.

But that doesn't mean something like that couldn't exist, it just means that it would have to be an existing undiscovered species, rather than an unusually large version of a smaller animal.

But this is a monster movie, so anything can happen.

ok, assuming the monster can actually move at these speeds...is it too far fetched to think that the monster is a large version of.....THE JESUS LIZARD!

I think this is what some of you are trying to say about not being able to support his weight:

That's only assuming it's bipedal though.

As long as there's enough legs, to support the weight, you can have enormous creatures. You can create a giant centipede by tying a heard of elephants in a line Smile
Same applies for assuming it needs one enormous heart to pump the blood, octopodes have 3 hearts, for example.

I gotta be honest... I don't think J.J. Abrams was thinking THAT far into this...

besides, I think this thing is going to be more wide and long than it is tall.

Bees can't fly.
The engineers just say it can't be so.
Cool

They use anti-gravitational devices.
