 Great Moments in ARG History

I'm wondering what you'd consider the Top Ten (or whatever) blockbuster moments in ARG history. What was the most fun, the most innovative, what made your head explode, what was the most emotional, what do you think back on the most often?

For me, nothing compares to the Beast and the Mike Royal phone-in event. So simple, but so powerful.

Anyone?

I'm particularly drawn to live events, so my top two are:

1. The Anti-Robot Militia rally from The Beast, which was a completely pivotal event in terms of showing how far gameplay could extend, cooperative efforts across multi-platforms and locations, etc.

2. The private NIN concert that a few lucky ducks got to attend as part of Year Zero.

I didn't play, but I think that Weephun's betrayl of the Sleeping Princess in ILB has to rank up there in the top 10.

"Lucy" with her pink Mustang showing up LIVE at the Hollywood Forever cemetery for the last LCP Graveyard Games. And Vic's hat going around the world.

Just single moments, like individuals pieces of time when my head was blown off? There's a ton, of course; here's some goodies:

(*) At the PCAG event in NYC, mid-game and between fFoods and chatting and things, people milling around, suddenly everyone's phone goes off. people start running in every direction to get more information, a better signal, everything. craziness ensues. I am told it was that, times 20 at the san fFrancisco event with more people and helicopters.

(*) After cracking the Hesh Records site, we eventually uncovered "Track 3.mp3". The fFile is a recording of Monica's brutal murder, and the ID3 tags say:

Composer:
James, Oliver, Chris, Tim, Rob, Jamie, Guy, Ryan, Matthew, Mat, Paul, Lee, Becky, Josiah, Dee
(All people who were at the Clapham Commons live event)
Quote:
Do you ever have the feeling that someone's watching you? When the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, when you know if you turn round you'll see them, but you don't turn round?

Are you having that feeling now?

(*) It was around 3AM some night during Rookery Tower. We had been given this completely obscure wacky concoction of a fFile. Basically it was this scanned image of a news item which had been sliced into a couple hundred strips about 2 pixels wide. Everyone was thinking "this is absurdly hard, surely just to buy some time fFor the PMs or something. They don't really expect us to do this, do they?" An hour or two later, I had it stitched back together and gave a fFairly important part of the story. (This being one of my fFew completely legitimate solves in any game.)

(*) And then there was the time I interviewed someone at Mind Candy ... Yeah, that was really awesome. I had fFlown in to NYC fFor the PCAG event, and had arranged to do a Sentinel Newspaper Interview as well. I mean, imagine if you will, the opportunity to interview Janine Salla or someone. So there we are, I'm asking all these questions about the Cube and Sente and everything, and we're having this conversation and it's the most important thing imaginable, right in the middle of the Toy fFair ... way cool Smile

My favorite moment in ARGs that I've played was on February 18th, 2007, when we were just getting reports from the live event in MeiGeist... And then, in the midst of the live event chaos, this video pops up. Eva disappeared. Keir presumed dead. OMG ensued. Smile

You know, the interesting thing here, to me, is how many of you are listing really moving story events, as opposed to the big-budget live events. ...and no puzzles at all...

I wonder how much of this is a function of the limited number of people a live event can touch?

...no puzzles...

heh, ok, a_pawn

Twisted Evil

the frustratingly unsolved ilovebees audio clip puzzle Razz
classic example of how one little hiccup can have a huge impact in the community (much like the delayed calling in of the final cell phone recently in Dark Knight Laughing)

Interestingly, I wasn't even at the live event for MeiGeist. The memorable part for me was just that feeling of all the chaos of the incoming reports of the live event being forgotten while we saw Eva's sorrow at the loss of her love. The fact that we cared so much for the character was what made this story event so moving.

1) "Arg Talk" launch.

I don't know if any other launch will be able to top that.

That's all I've got right now, I'll add more as it comes to me.

This is a tough one.

As for puzzles, I would vote for the i love bee's Widow's Journey text puzzle simply because it was a beautiful story. (also, it is the only puzzle I've ever solved.)

For live events, the ilb training event because I got to bring my son (and he got to play Halo on the big screen); the last call poker graveyard event in New York because every moment of that was awesome; and, the recent Dark Knight screening because I got to share it with Giskard who was visiting from the Netherlands.

From PPC, reading Random's account of finding the Cube and those few chats we had where we tried to go through the puzzles and solve them.

Favorite task ever: the small favor in Last Call Poker where I placed roses on the graves at St. Pauls Chapel in New York which is across the street from the World Trade Center.

From Eldritch Errors: watching people solve how the virus worked and figuring out that it was "the gate and the guardian of the gate" something I could not quite grasp.

From Orbital Colony: getting the letter with the hair ribbon and a code on it from a character who was a young girl sneaking out info for us.

From Last Call Poker: being on the phone with Shadow when he found the grave that had been set up for a character.

From Year Zero: the amazing billboards, those still take my breath away.

From Art of the Heist: going to the auto show and seeing where the Audi had been stolen.

Delusional: Funny you should mention the ARG Talk launch. I'm to this day disappointed it turned out to be an ARG, because I enjoyed the news reporting so much. Smile

For everybody: I am, of course, reaching for that question "What makes a great player experience?"

Many of these things are emotional watershed moments for people who've been engaged with the game; many of them are opportunities for you, as the player, to feel like you are touching a tangible part of the game world. (Hair ribbons, Lucy in her pink wheels.) Does that sound fair?

Why are these great moments great for you?

 the ceremony @ mouse's tank

i will never forget the day Kona went to valley of fire state park and performed the "ancient spoocheeeee ritual". it was wonderful in many different ways. so much had taken place to get us to that moment.. and it is a great example of when the choices of the players really were guiding the story - and also an example where some of the community had crossed over and really become a part of the narrative. it was awesome.

My greatest moment would be the "glitch" in the Metacortechs' servers, that sent out the creepy phonecall on Halloween 2003... that was the creepiest and most tense and exciting moment ever imho... the entry on october 31st in the online MU Book still gives me the creeps Very Happy

Favorite Puzzles: JMX! I had some of the best times in the jmx chat room trying to solve those puzzles. And I actually solved a few... "gridlock" woo!

Live Event: This is really a tough one because I've attending so many incredible events myself. I think it's a tie between the zombie-mime cruise in Chicago for Art of the Heist and the WV camping trip for Eldritch Errors.

Favorite Task: The small favors in Last Call Poker. I brought my daughter along and it turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of her life. (she was three at the time)

Favorite ARG: Gah, this is hard. I love all of the ARGs I've played for so many different reasons. I'd have to say that since Chasing the Wish was my first, it will always be my first ARG love. It was before the time of wikis, so I did the entire trail myself. Needless to say, I was very involved Smile

Public outing of my ARG playing

My most memorable part of an ARG was when I received a threatening call while playing urban hunt. I was at a party and I had my phone turned up really loud. Just when the call came in the music stopped and everyone in the room heard as a guy screamed that he was going to kill me for about 3 minuets.
