I rather like the idea of tentacled "mouths" - it would be a different take on the usual "big mothership with little armies". And though it looks like the bitten person is going to explode, I'm left pondering the reasons behind why that would happen (as it's been overdone, really, in so many horror movies, and I expect more from Abrams).

As for the fiery explosions, I like them in the newer versions - I also like that things aren't burning that shouldn't be -- there's little to burn on the SoL's head, so it _shouldn't_ be on fire (though I'm not convinced the monster is the one that popped her head off, I think it was either hte barge or a missle from one of those jets, but that is slightly OT)

I've seen mouthed tentacle 'mini monsters' done in Tremors (good), and Deep Rising (awful). Both of them play on the idea that the tentacles are the entire monster at first, so this wouldn't be the same as those.
