I don't have a particular opinion on whether this is real or fake, but I work in NYC, and these promotions happen constantly -- for movies, for shows, for DVDs, for new products...just about anything.
It's low wage work for people with time to spare: I don't think that the companies would go through an agency for something so lightweight. Thus, it's not entirely out of the question, and I don't think that the wording being informal is improper. If this was legit, it would be managed by the people doing Clover's PR and marketing, which isn't necessarily too connected to any bigwigs.
If legit, it reminds me of the promotion for the Omen remake we got a while back: Bunch of random dudes and dudettes marching around in death cloaks with "THE DEVIL IS COMING" and "666" signs.
If you're going to say "nay" to this one being valid, do so because you don't like the wording or don't think it's realistic that it'd be on Craigslist. It's DEFINITELY possible that they would run a promotion like this, though.

I'm a professional writer and I didn't see many errors. It looks legit to me. You people are way too skeptical. But maybe that's a good thing. And maybe it was written by a really smart 5-year old, game jacker. I don't know.

I remember when i was a Kid, the coolest thing ever was that the week before ID4 "independence day" they Had 4 military Huey Helicopters Fly over the LA Basin with HUGE Banners Stating various Phrases and the Last one Saying ID4, i thought it was the coolest thing, that movie had a shitload of hype as well, even with Big Willie in it.

I have a friend who is staying with relatives in the city this coming week, and he plans on seeing a few movies. I'll tell him to keep an eye out for anyone passing anything out...just in case.

If legit, I would bet 50 bucks that this will take the form of a mock protest of deep sea drilling.
I might lose that bet, so I'd follow it up with a 20 buck wager that it'll have to do with Slusho.
Either way, like all the marketing for the film, I doubt this would be straight-played.

I wonder what they are doing for this promotion? I haven't seen anything at all. Anyone see anybody in New York promoting a soon to be released monster movie?

I meant in New York. A little known fact is that writing on the sidewalk with chalk can be considered a misdemeanor in NYC.

Re: [PRESS] Job Announcement r/t Movie Craigslist posting
There was another one here but it got pulled.
Since it did, I'll just say
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
eyAnOicgPT4gJycsICcgJyA9PiAnLScsICdzXG4nID0+ICdzLmNvbVxuJyB9 converts to { ':' => '', ' ' => '-', 's\n' => 's.com\n' }
Apply that to the subject in the contact field gives you: http://wanted-master-software-developers.com/
At the top of the css file you see: /*
([Dollar,Daily Universal Register] % 100).([Flavian II => Severus] / 2 - 1).([Sherman Anti-Trust,Van Gogh] / 9).([Tycho Brahe,Stellar] / 12)
*/
Which looks like an IP address.
1: dollar and daily universal register had the year 1785 in common. 1785%100 = 85
2: the date of transition (=>) between the two rulers was 512. 512/2-1 = 255
3: Sherman Anti-Trust and Van Gogh have the year 1890 in common. 1890/9 = 210
4: Tycho's supernova was in 1572. 1572/12 = 131
Going here: http://85.255.210.131/
Only reveals 'yes'

Although thinking about it, really seems to has nothing to do with Cloverfield so take all this with a large boulder of salt.
Edit: ad mirror

No, this looks more like a clever ad for a company looking for clever programmers.
See this article on Slashdot.

I think there are different Craigslist posts being discussed in this thread. The first one posted in this thread links to jobs in new york promoting a movie.
I'll just quote it here for clarity:
Quote:
Reps needed for 2- wk promotion of soon-to-be-released thriller!
Reply to: job-513681634SPLAT craigslist.org
Date: 2007-12-18, 9:25PM EST
If you are into movies, have an upbeat personality and a flexible schedule during the holidays we just may have the perfect opportunity for you!
We are looking for reps to participate in a very cool TWO-WEEK promotion of a much anticipated thriller!
The main responsibilities will include hand-to-hand distribution of promotional merch at various high traffic areas with a heavy emphasis on movie theaters, retail stores and outdoor holiday festitivies (where applicable). Creativity is strongly encouraged on this promotion.
Weekly photographs and reports will also be required each week to document your work and locations visited. Additional monetary incentives are provided to those who turn in required documents on a timely basis.
This is considered part-time/temporary work classified as an independent contractor, not an employee.
*Please be at least 21 years of age.
*Please be familiar with local malls and cineplexes.
*Must have flexible schedule--no 9-5'ers.
Please have reliable transportation.
This is considered part-time/temporary work classified as an independent contractor, not an employee.
DATES:
December 21-January 4th
**with possible extension till January 18th 2008.
PAY & HOURS:
Dec. 14th thru 21st $200/week ($150 a week plus $50 incentive for approx. 12-15 flexible hours)
Dec. 21st thru 28th $250/wk ($200 a week plus $50 incentive for approx. 12-15 flexible hours)
Dec. 28th thru 1/4 $250/wk ($200 plus $50 incentive for approx. 12-15 flexible hours)
TO APPLY:
Please be sure to place "NYC MONSTER" in the subject line, otherwise our spam guard will eat it.
Provide a name, city, zip code and contact numbers where you can be readily reached.
Provide a resume or work history.
Send photo--(2nd email if necessary).
Can jobs require you to submit a photo? Isn't that illegal? maybe those laws don't apply to this company or to part time work.
I know..people think this is bogus anyway.
