I agree, if anything is going after humans individually, it's something besides MGP himself. I'm going to be most interested to see the intelligence / malevolence level for the beast. Is it just playing rough on the environment it found itself in? Is it disgusted by the city and deliberately destroying it? Is he just "grumpy", lashing out at anything near him.

The Statue of Liberty being decapitated gives me the impression of hostility and not just random carnage. Like some people have stated, possibly reguarding the statue as a threat/competitor in the environment and attacking it. I'd be surprised if it were intelligent enough to have specific intent to attack it's symbolic meaning though (like Cthulhu would, he would likely perceive it as an idol, and mash it specifically to show who's boss).

I gotta be honest- I don't think there was much thought put into "why the monster attacks the SOL" other than the simple fact that J.J. wanted that image in the film. I mean, this movie is indeed well thought out- but to an extent. I mean, if he was inspired by the "Escape from New York" poster, why should we assume that there is a deeper reason than that? The monster will be intelligent, but only in an instinctive sense. That doesn't say that there doesn't HAVE to be a reason for MGP attacking NYC, but it'll be for something instinctual- or it could simply be 'just because.' I mean, NYC is basically a national icon and on top of that, this film will [in many ways] symbolize the events of 9/11; the same way Godzilla represented America's nuclear testing and Hiroshima.

It may be the best reason we're gonna find. Or it may not. But don't be disappointed if we never find out why it's attacking NYC, or why it took off the SOL's head- because outside of the movie- we know why.

It looked to me like it had teeth marks in it since the 5 minute preview was released. so im wondering now if it didnt try to eat it, and since it was metal, spit it out, instead of throwing it. A bitch that big could spit that far. Like us with watermelon seeds

I would buy this, except that no existing animals go as far to chew on metal. Even bears and lions won't do that. Not that this thing heeds to the laws of existing animals, but if he's going for realism, i don't think JJ would do that.
Seems like the SoL head would be kinda slobbery too Surprised

What kind of monster doesn't chew on everything it can find?

Not many. But it's metal for God's sake! Even mgp has gotta think to itself "Shit this thing is sharp, why the hell would I chew on this?"
Except like Lambo_Diablo_Svtt said, goats. Half whale, half goat? Terrifying.

If it's stupid enough to stomp all over NY, it's stupid enough to chew on some metal.

It's not uncommon for aggressive animals to attack strange things. For a simple example... consider a dog ripping up a stuffed animal.

Metal wise...possibly a shark attacking the metal cage a diver is in.

Although in this case I'd lean towards grumpypants feeling extremely angry and possibly flexing its muscles on the nearest thing. Maybe it felt threatened by something roughly its own size too. Obviously there is enough blind aggression here for him to do that much damage to the SOL regardless of metal or not.

Yeah. Well its kinda like the first guy that decided he was going to try to eat an artichoke, ya know?

I wish that metal tasted like artichoke. Maybe it does to mgp, hell if i know. After eons of eating fishes and whales, a big chunk of French steel might taste great!

this is an interesting idea, sharks are drawn to the electro magnetic waves or what not that, the cage produces. So say whatever MGP is, the SoL being as large and metal as it is, gives off some what of an electro magnetic force, thus bringing MGP's attention towards it. I dont know too much how these things work, or even if metal gives off the same magnetism on dry land, rather than under water....just a thought.

Though that theory is probably stretching it a bit...I took this from wikipedia to clarify it.

"The Ampullae of Lorenzini are the electroreceptor organs of the shark, and they vary in number from a couple of hundred to thousands in an individual. Sharks use the Ampullae of Lorenzini to detect the electromagnetic fields that all living things produce. This helps sharks find its prey (mostly the hammer head). The shark has the greatest electricity sensitivity known in all animals. This sense is used to find prey hidden in sand by detecting the electric fields inadvertently produced by all fish. It is this sense that sometimes confuses a shark into attacking a boat: when the metal interacts with salt water, the electrochemical potentials generated by the rusting metal are similar to the weak fields of prey, or in some cases, much stronger than the prey's electrical fields: strong enough to attract sharks from miles away. The oceanic currents moving in the magnetic field of the Earth also generate electric fields that can be used by the sharks for orientation and navigation."

@.@ Still, it's a bit far out there? It might be another possible explanation for the bite marks(if they even were bites?). I doubt MGP is a shark...and since it's origins (underwater maybe) have yet to be confirmed there is no telling whether this is relevent or not. Interesting...but it's a stretch like I said.

As Tiger said, I too have seen the "We got a bitter" in the trailer which to me verifies there is smaller monsters. Just the way that bit of the trailer ends in the next like 4 frames tells me. They drag her in, yell to the rest, cut to panic, then cut to her untimly death of her exsploding. Just my 2 cents
