[SPEC]Cloverfield Monster = Godzilla 2.0 It's pretty much know that the Cloverfield Monster is not Godzilla but perhaps when J.J. Abrams said that "America needs it's own Godzilla" maybe he was aluding to the fact that the Cloverfield monster is not totally unlike Godzilla but is perhaps a larger, meaner, uglier and more deformed version of him.

[sarcasm]you might be on to something. Like, it won't be called Godzilla, but it'll be something that's huge and alive- like Godzilla. [/sarcasm]
I just don't see why it's not possible that this monster is completely new and original like J.J. [ALSO] said. When J.J. spoke at the nerd-convention [comicon] he wasn't being secretive or there weren't 'hidden messages', everything he said just needs to be taken literal for once. I REALLY feel sorry for J.J. Abrams if everyone reacts this way in his personal life.
J.J. Abrams: Hi honey, how was your day?
Wife: what do you mean by honey? Is there a clue in our bear-shaped honey bottle? and is "Hi" an acronym? When you say "Day" is that pertaining to some sort of emphasis on the sun?

Not to be a big jerk or anything but isn't this essentially what the 1998 American Godzilla film was?

IT
IS
NOT
GODZILLA
OR
ANYTHING
LIKE
GODZILLA
EXCEPT
FOR
THE
FACT
THAT
IT
IS
A
GIANT
MONSTER.
STOP WITH THE GODZILLA SPEC. Seriously, I now see why Kraker slashes his wrist 5 times a day.

I've shown the teaser, trailer and 5 min clip to my brother and several other friends and the first thing they all say is "Oh , so its a Godzilla movie."
I immediately list the reasons why this is not a "Godzilla" movie and they respond with
"But its just like a Godzilla movie"
Pulling my hair out I explain to them again how and why it is not but they don't care. To them, it is just another "Godzilla movie"
I have one friend whom I've converted and is now researching all things to do with cornbread but for those who just see the trailer and TV spots, they really are expecting a "Godzilla movie". That is what they will decide to see or not see. The taglines "What is it?" and "Something has found us" do little to detract from what it looks like to the casual observer.
My opinion: I DO NOT THINK IT IS A GODZILLA MOVIE!!!
I will be there on 1-18-08 to prove all those who do wrong. And if I'm wrong... well I will just lurk and watch everyone at Imdb tell me the told me so.
EDIT:spelling

Well, it IS a 'Godzilla' movie, just that Godzilla isn't in it. I'm willing to bet though that people wished he was. The original 'Mr Grumpypants' (Godzilla) still has yet to receive a modern day treatment. (Although there was NOTHING wrong with Godzilla 1985..still my favorite)

King Kong predates Godzilla.

There is absolutely ZERO evidence that disproves the Godzillla-like creature theory. ZERO!!

well there's not much evidence being provided that it has anything to do with any kind of godzilla, remake, or even some new one.
plus this is more or less be talked about in this thread

I'd rather have it be an interior crocodile alligator than Godzilla.

This same thing happened to me just last night. I was showing my friend some of the trailers for it and the first thing he said was "So it this a Godzilla Movie?". Immediately I jumped into how it is absolutely, no way, at all related to godzilla other then the fact that its a big monster trashing a town. But no matter what I said to him he just insisted it was a Godzilla flick...

The fact is that Godzilla has become largely synonymous with "monster movie". It's like Kleenex, Q-Tips, Band-Aid, and a host of other brand name products that have so dominated some part of an industry that their name becomes what everyone calls the product. Some people can't think outside that paradigm, and for them it has become an idiom.
All spy movies are 007 movies, right?

If it was Godzilla, I'm sure the film would have been promoted from the very start as a Godzilla movie.
The studio isn't going to promote this whole thing, keep dropping clues and peaks of the monster for it to turn out to be Godzilla.

[I'll say it again] for the seeing and thinking impaired [sarcasm]you might be on to something. Like, it won't be called Godzilla, but it'll be something that's huge and alive- like Godzilla. [/sarcasm]

and you know what- this thread is a friggin' joke. It honestly doesn't make any sense.
The proof you have that it's Godzilla:
1] Its huge
2] It attacks a city
3] It's possibly a shade of green
Proof that it's not Godzilla:
1]J .J. Abrams/Matt Reeves saying that it's something completely new, something we've never seen before.
And you know what... that's probably more proof than anything else, but here:
2] Slusho!
3] ToHo copyright policy- Legally, it's not allowed to be "Godzilla"
4] 1998 Godzilla "Zilla" was such a disaster that no one wants to touch ever again.
5] the ARG. [Nothing fits with the original story] and don't give me that "a new type of Godzilla" because that's just called a new monster all together. Not every damn city destroying monster is "Godzilla"
6] what Godzilla movie did you see someone expand to the point of bursting? Zero? would you say... zero? yeah.
7] The roar. [lets face it, you change the roar, you change the monster. Godzilla's roar is one of a kind and cannot be separated.]
