Someone just holds up the camera and starts filming, there are probably other accounts, [our footage is] just the one the government happens to find

Cloverfield's challenges on set arrived, Stahl-David says, when he was asked to react to a creature that would later be added via CGI.
So we are supposed to get a good enough look at the monster that Rob understands what he's seeing and is shocked by it.

the biggest thing that i took from the interview is that something that has kinda been kicked around and not said for 100% sure yet(at least i am pretty sure that it hasn't yet been completey confirmed) is that yes this is the tape that the government found. it is being shown as a government documentary/briefing material. meaning that there could very well be at the end of the movie some non-handicam videos of like newscasts or something like that.
also they way that he said "there could be other videos that people filmed" leads me to think that maybe there will be some sequels of videos from other people in NYC or other places that MGP gets to.

In a good franchise there's room given for fanfiction, and for less than full scale projects. If they do that with this, the 'other footage' could be constituted of fan fiction or of online shorts or TV serial content. It could even be the basis for a longer term ARG where we have to find the footage ourselves.

As long as they only destroy NYC once (meaning no more sequels based on footage from new york) and do something like an attack on western europe maybe, or even someplace less obvious like south america (where the cities arent so huge and metal) and this giant creature just terrorizes the hell outta the locals... that'd be kool. Maybe something like godzilla's monster island where there were little to no people, just nature and the monsters... (except obviosly some tourist/documenturer films the event)
Because its so imtimate, there can be sequels that are completely different.

I'm hoping there'll be 'other videos filmed by different people' on the DVD.
Just short clips here and there that give a different perspective.

It could not only be America's Godzilla, it could be America's 28 Days Later (apocalyptic, worldwide "plague")

Oh yeah, I'm waiting for the DVD, because the theme is so prosperous for various perspectives, versions and genres!

react != shocked
at least not exclusively, he could be horrified!

I love the originality that Cloverfield has shown -- so showing other footage of what other people have filmed does sound like turning it into a very large gimmick.

Aren't we already watching the "other" footage? I'm not discounting a potential:
"Field Designate Incident Cloverfield Video recovered from Incident site 998 are formerly known as Dodger Stadium"
But maybe the ARG is going to mutate (sorry couldn't resist) from a "find the monster origins" game to a "find other video of the monster" game.
