 New Myspace bulletin from Amanda

I 'm new, so I apologize in advance for any $intex*irrurs, but there was a new bulletin today from Amanda, the 3C.

Quote:
OK everybody, thanks for the drawings, thanks for telling me who you were (that was really for YOU to figure out, cause that's the great puzzle!) and thanks for all the compliments (hello, guys). Wink Ashra knows the answer to the Florence thing, and the page will stay up even though I'm getting FOLDED. I'll miss all of you so much! Stick around wth the rest of the deck, expecially the Two of Clubs (Jonah) and the Two of Diamonds (Domenic), they're great guys!!!!!

Love,
A M A N D A / 3 C

I hope i'm not treading on Ashras toes here, she got it remarkably fast Smile

It boils down like this Smile

The answer was to be found in the Alice in wonderland books, I say 'books' which I think was the whole point of this puzzle. The first edition was called 'Alice's underground adventures' and this is where the solution lies.

Ada, gertrude and Florence were the hints that we were given to find the answer, as well as the reference to 'I'll never get to twenty'. If you look in Alice in wonderland in chapter 2 you'll see a paragraph beginning

Quote:
"I'm sure I'm not Ada,' she said, `for her hair goes in such long ringlets"

This was the first hint, later in that paragraph it goes on to talk about getting to twenty and then discussing Geography. I'm sure this confused a lot of people as it did myself as it seemed so close to the correct answer!

Now, if you look in 'Alice's Underground Adventures' - which is essentially the first draft of Wonderland as I understand it, it has a similar paragraph in chapter 1 but it's quite different and here is where the next hint lies. This paragraph begins...

Quote:
"I'm sure I'm not Gertrude," she said, "for her hair goes in such long ringlets"

Later in the paragraph it goes on to talk about Florence!

Quote:
"and I'm sure I can't be Florence, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh! she knows such a very little!"

So there you have a Direct reference to Ada, Gertrude and Florence - and it's dealing with Alice having a crisis as she can't decide who she is, she goes on to decide that she must be Florence by a process of elimination and again, that threw me as I assumed Alice was Florence Smile

So more digging revealed this...

http://books.google.com/books?id=Ekrgc3RowTgC&pg=PA254&dq=%22alice+liddell%22+gertrude+florence&sig=mBxN5Tx57K0pFSOBI51VFSUN1X0

Which explains that Florence and Gertrude were the real life cousins of Alice Liddell, these names were changed to Ada and Mable in Alice in wonderland to save any embarrasment for the family name Smile

So... the answer is 'Florence is Alice Liddells cousin' - and Amanda was extremely happy to hear this via email, repeatedly saying YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!! lol. A very clever little puzzle, clever Amanda - she will be missed.
