The Mike Reid Connection

I will attempt to explain the road that has lead to my current, and probably incorrect, thinking. However, it's all either an elaborate puzzle or a coincidence.

It all started in #acheron, when Ramiles mentioned that "xover222," an in-game character apparantly, asked about "Mike Reid."

"Xover" was strangely familiar to me. Where did I hear it from? I immediately went to Google, and it all boomeranged back.

Xover is an NNTP, or Usenet, command to search for specific posts in a newsgroup. In other words, I might be looking for articles 51-79 on alt.acheron.

So, I went straight to Google Group and searched for "Mike Reid." I came back with a lot of results. Sort by date, and it seems a fellow named "Mike Reid" has been very active in rec.europe.travel and a few UK groups.

He had his website in his signature, which pointed to his website. He apparantly lives in the UK. I suspect London. I have a list of theories regarding him.

1. He's not in-game, all a coincidence.
2. He's not in-game, but we need to find his location regardless.
3. He is in-game, and part of the PM team who just happens to have been posting in these newsgroups for a long time.

So, to review, here's the available evidence.

1. Xover222. Xover is a command to find articles on Usenet.
2. Xover was asking for "Mike Reid." Mike Reid is a prolific poster on Usenet.
3. Xover was asking for Mike Reid's location. Mike Reid posts on regional newsgroups, which would mean we could find his location if this were a puzzle.

So, if this a puzzle, then "Mike Reid" is in the UK, possibly London. If it's not a puzzle, er, well, I solved it anyway.

I guess we should try and contact the fellow who asked about the guy.

I posted this a couple of days ago about xover222 in another thread. here it is again in case people missed it

Quote:
xover222 is in-game. it was a contact that the ARGFest participants were supposed to discover while they were in Las Vegas

see aliendial's post here (half way down the page)... http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1085&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

I believe it's Reggie's yahoo id since he left the ARGFest participants a message saying "I'm gone. I hope you got the CDs at some point." and he's the one that left the CD package for them (it was signed Hexeditor)...
