I personally don't think so - exploding Marlena sort of discounts that whole idea. However, it's good thinking, in a 28 Days Later kind of way.

Mutated humans...dunno about that. If anything they burst out from them.
And exploding people in films has happened before...expanding anyway.

If there are little creatures- I'm still not 100% convinced- couldn't they be mutated from those dogs and other animals that Tagruato tested on back in October?

I reckon there must be some full wide scale outspread, as NYC wouldn't be so clean/empty after only a couple of hours (eg. Rob's soliloquy to the camera)

Maybe the monster is one big mass of humans clumped together, rolling over NYC and getting bigger as it moves alone.

anyone ever see that episode of Futurama with the Poplers? They found the nest planet of the aliens from Omicron Persei 8 and they brought the babies back to earth and everyone was eating them? then the Aliens demanded to be given a human in return to eat? Maybe the seabed nectar is similar, maybe it is intended for other creatures to eat it so the lil creatures can gestate, and when they emerge they summon the big guy in to wreak havoc? just a thought... a weird one too.
