This won't effect Cloverfield BO much as it's counter programming anyway.
I think this is just Fox's attempt to move from a crowded weekend and take advantage of the fact that Mad Money has no buzz at all and looks to be a complete stinker.

Judging from the tv spots "27 Dresses" looks like crap. Why do these movies get made? Contractual obligations? Easy money?

If I had 27 dresses... I would still be the first to see "Cloverfield"

Nope, But the real synopsis sounds just as craptacular as yours did
That's a pretty awful sounding plot... how many people end up bring a bridesmaid to 27 separate weddings? Sounds a bit like My Best Friend's Wedding but with a sibling connection rather than a friend connection.

I read this and threw up a little in my mouth. I HATE chick flicks, with the exception of two - My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Must Love Dogs (John Cusack? Come on! Gotta love that one), but the others, gah! That shite NEVER happens to real people (at least none I know), and I'm tired of watching the same formula played over and over and over again. I love monster movies, scifi, action flicks (what better way to see hot men flex their pecs than when they're blowing stuff up!).

a movie about a wedding dress - brilliant marketing....every damned woman in the world outside of the Cloverheads here is gonna watch that shit.
There, fixed that for you.
Just watched Fight Club yesterday - hotness squared!
And I'm praying that "24" starts again this month, even if it becomes "9", with the writer's strike and all. Jack Bauer FTW!!!

Yippe ki yay motha-f(*&ers! I liked the Die Hard movies, too! The last one was action-packed and funny. Justin Long and Bruce Willis were great together! One of my favorite exchanges, "Did you see that?" "Did I see it? I DID it!" The awesomenest!

27 Dresses is the polar opposite of Cloverfield ; it's a chick flick. I don't think it'll have that much of an impact.
If anything, it will affect Cloverfield , because more men will be dragged in to the chick flick by their significant others because the women don't want to see a monster movie. Heck, I am pretty sure my wife wouldn't be caught dead watching Cloverfield ...
Actually, maybe that's why they kept the name Cloverfield ?
Me: Honey, let's watch a movie.
Her: Which one?
Me: Cloverfield.
Her: Sounds romantic... what's it about?
Me: Uh... A guy trying to find the love of his life in New York.
Her: Bet it has a cute dog, too.
Me: Uh... yeah... a big one.
Her: Aw...
I know this is late but I started cracking up and ppl were looking at me at work so had to give props. This was hysterical

kinda close to change the date, huh?
what about all of the women looking forward to the movie? They're going to be mad... the guys that'll be stuck with them will just be able to sneek into CLoverfield. their wives wont notice cuz they'll be too busy crying over Heigl's enormous closet and her cliche search to find love...
edit:
and do you guys hear the commercials?
"Last year she was Knocked Up, this year she can't even get married!"
...um... thats SOOO bad...

Sounds like a girl I went to college with.
Now, I'm a sucker for a chick flick, but if I had to chose, I'd pick a movie with lots of explosions rather that the "boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl-blah-blah" cliche.
I just love movies. Period. (I have over 500 on my hard drive and about 300 on dvd.)

meh, I don't think that's a big deal. The sort of people that actively see a movie like 27 dresses on opening day, are different than the sort of people that would see Cloverfield on an opening day. At least that's what I'd guess.

It just gives others someplace to go while the REAL women go see Cloverfield!

Tag [HUMOR] Wow, that's craptacular. I hate romantic comedies.
Funny thing is that it's not Anti-Cloverfield, because women want to see Cloverfield.
Maybe they're hoping for CF theaters to fill up, so then folks spill into 27 Dresses.
I'd only see 27 Dresses if I was struck in the head by a meteorite, and got knocked into a wheelchair which rolled into 27 Dresses' theatre.
