[SPEC] Use of hacking in this game?

Looking at the utilities that came on the miniCDs and NRU SEC's reference to "script kiddies", I am wondering if there might be some low grade hacking we are supposed to do? I know there is usually a rule against that sort of thing, and I imagine we are still not supposed to brute force passwords, but it seems here we have been given a suite of "script kiddie" type crackers and hackers. Maybe we are being nudged toward learning some hacking to find a lead?

By the way, a port scan of nru.us shows not only the webserver, but also an ftp server (which does not allow anonymous access), a mail server, and interestingly enough, a pcanywhere data port...

hmm...that is an interesting point...I checked out the software too...there is a lot of hacking/cracking software that they gave out to the original players of L3.

What do the 'vets' think?

Also, how do you scan the ports of a website?

Thx,
D-

I used superscan. It was in the software package that was given out on the cds.

How does one go about acquiring the files on the CDs.. if one does not have the CDs?

Just curious.

What port does pcanywhere run on?

Has anyone tried to pcanywhere in?

I'm showing it on 5631 at nru.us. I haven't tried to connect to it, I don't have pcanywhere, and plus I didn't want to attack it yet. I mean, it could just be set up so that the PMs can reboot that server in case of a problem or something. I find the FTP port interesting though, I bet that will tie in at some point. Cool

At this point, what is there to do?

Also since Reggie/Hexeditor gave us the CD, perhaps the reference that "Reggie has the key." is trying to say we need to use that stuff on the CD to start the game?

I am in the belief, that even though some people dont have the CD the files on the CD are whats needed to start the game.

In all essense of the sense, looking for a backdoor in too NRU using the tools that were given to some of you isnt considering hacking or at least hard core hacking..

All we are really doing is snooping for a backway in... And maybe that whats needed to get into the school.

Maybe I have stumbled onto something by getting the IM from NRU SEC and having XXOVER222 Contact me.. Maybe we need to find someone who has a connection to Jake who can give us a clue..

The Inital Contact message said, Looking for Mike Reid. and What Saucy has come up with is someone who is in physics. he may just be a in-game character.. or he may be a real person..

we will never know till one of us contacts him... I am assuming that not all game sites end in .US...

So were onto something but not sure what...

Lets keep plugging at it..

Are there any among us who know how to find backdoors into websites?

Anyone have any idea what might be a possible username and password? I'd like to try a few with the FTP server.

I'm not sure if that's what we're supposed to do, though. I just wonder why we were given all the hacking stuff?

Is this the only website we know of for Acheron?

well, you could always do a reverse IP WHOIS to find out which websites are associated with acheron.us...you just never know what might show up!
