7 New Year's Resolutions We'd Like to See from Hollywood
By Thomas Leupp
With 2008 still in its infancy, folks everywhere are busy drawing up their New Year's resolutions, flush with the delusional optimistic notion that this might be the year that they finally quit smoking, lose weight or get organized.
In that spirit of wishing thinking, I humbly propose the following New Year's resolutions for moviedom's powers that be.
and the #1 is........................
1. Ease Up on the Viral Marketing
Wanna see the trailer for Cloverfield? All you have to do is solve seven Chinese riddles to reveal the secret location of the magical wizard key that unlocks a chest containing a map -- written in Sanskrit -- that leads to an underground Masonic temple. Knock three times and a blind albino man will blink in Morse code the link to a special website. Log onto the site precisely when the Moon is in line with Jupiter -- not a second before -- and you'll get the first glimpse of The Big Untitled J.J. Abrams Whatever.

that is perfect.
Except JJ isn't as generous with his clues.. it would be a dream to have that many (and that obvious )

I like how he ended it with "Whatever"
Article could have put a image up of a movie theatre with JJ on the screen as a Dungeon Master -Hands out towards the crowd controlling them! (Metallica's Master of Puppets Blasting out of speakers)
That would have been awesome! (I need more Coffee!)

Now isn't that just a little idiotic really?
To see a trailer we've never had to go through such hoops. I think someone there still is a bit behind on the whole Ethan Haas thing not being part of this viral campaign, but they aren't the only ones . I think it's actually been pretty easy to find most of the sites, considering it didn't take more than a few hundred truly interested people to get the trail started with the first sites (1-18-08.com and slusho.jp). I mean really, by the time 2 weeks had past from the debut of the teaser Google had already indexed 1-18-08.com as the #1 result for a search of that date. Are these people incapable of using a browser and search engine? I guess they just want ads shoved at them from network TV, so they know to go buy a ticket and watch the movie. They strike me as the kind of people that would rather pick up a hooker than actually have to socialize with someone to get laid.

2 things:
1] it's an exaggeration
2] [and this is the most important one] it's a joke... a jokey-joke... a haha? funny-funny?
A sense of humor is needed when
reading this
living.

Exactly.. most people don't follow ARE's or care... If talk of this movie wasn't on Yahoo's most searched front page thingy, I wouldn't know squat. I'm not into any of the movies that the trailer appeared in front of... but u do know this was humor right?

This tag is labeled [HUMOR].
Just want to clarify this w/ everyone... and remember, not everyone wants to do 'research' on a movie. I enjoy it simply because I like uncovering stuff mysteries n' such... But not everyone has the same interests as we do... they do social things, so they don't have the time to research a 90 minute film.

Uh, there's no 'humor' tag on the article. The style is over the top, but it still makes no sense as there's is no special procedure of any kind to see the trailer. There's not even a special procedure to find or access the sites or their content with the exception of Jamie's videos. This person heard the viral campaign is an ARG type thing and didn't really bother to check to find out that it's Chaotic Fiction but in a pretty non-ARG convention. I see the humor of this thread being that the article's author has no clue what they are talking about.

honestly it's not a big deal, and I see where the author's getting at.
I mean, c'mon- So much of this movie is 'hush-hush' and some people don't like/want that. Some people just like getting on Wikipedia and looking up the plot/actors and calling it a day.... and they're entitled to their opinion and can over-exaggerate the way they see this campaign all they want.
I think it's hilarious. This whole ARG thing is REALLY dorky [God-forbid I dare say it] and it gives people a chance to release the dorkiness within. Having a little sense of humor at that isn't so bad. I'm sure whoever wrote that is probably geekin' it up with the rest of us over this Cloverfield ARG/ARE type... thing.
