[SPEC] Cloverfield Style: Pros and Cons

I was thinking about the style of the Cloverfield movie- now that we've got more than just trailers, but a few minutes of actual footage in correct sequence. What do you think will be good and bad effects from using this documentary style? Of the idea of flashbacks (Coney Island Footage)? Of the lack of 'background' or informational shots of military or political higher ups scrambling?

Personally, I hate when you're watching a horror/thriller with unnecessarily loud background music. Or when they have the stupid 'swoosh' when the bad guy moves around unobserved in the background. It takes away from the suspense. I'm looking forward to Cloverfield because there won't be any such thing.

A negative would be that I get very motion sick. I worried about the camera's shaky motions, but from what I've seen so far, there is enough steady-cam or professional work to make the experience smooth and enjoyable. In other words, just wobbly enough to be realistic, without being so ridiculous that you never see the 'Blair Witch.'

Then there's interesting question about whether or not clips or text will be spliced with the footage to provide background info, or whether us ARGers are going to have to figure it out. Smile The use of additional footage or text as a 'frame' to the movie, or as extras over the credits ala Dawn of the Dead might be nice. Thoughts?

(Mm, I hope this isn't a double post. I searched, but there are a lot of adjectives Wink I shan't be hurt if you trout me. )

i went to see The Bourne Ultimatum at the movies. they used no steadycam at all and i had to sit in the front row. it was making me sick to my stomach.i

i kinda like the no steadycam idea but it was no fun from the front row of the movie theater

They made the movie that way to make it more fast paced and intense. Because the camera is always moving. (They did it on purpose, possibly in post production)

I've been thinking that if you go to early viewings, there may be a fair amount of people excited for the movie that didn't get involved in the viral campaign we have been following, and they might start asking their friends a lot of questions afterward. The questions in my mind are do you open your mouth and explain some of it, and will you be mobbed by people playing 20 questions?

I would hope that any of us would tell them to keep spoilers to themselves.

Or failing that, at least not post it here.

Cool

at least use a spoiler tag so those of us who want to wait to see it don't accidentally read it.. that would be nice
