[META] Forum Organisation
Read me (or not, if you like surprises).

The mods and admins have been having a little chat about forum organisation in this subforum and were thinking that it would be helpful if we sub-divided into sections.

With the build-up to 1-18-08 (or in the UK 18-1-08, much nicer I think) we're going to get more and more new people and also need to be able to cope with movie spoilers for those who've seen it and those who won't be able to see it until later.

We propose splitting the subforum into three main areas:

General/Updates - for general spec, updates to the sites etc.
Press/Reference - for press articles and for all those lovely bits of reference that have been carefully, beautifully, constructed.
Movie Discussion (spoilers) - will contain all discussion about the movie. If you don't want to have things spoiled for you, then no need to go in. Conversely, anything spoilery posted anywhere else can be transferred there.

This also reduces the need for the spoiler tags which

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
quickly

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
become

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
irritating

Hopefully, this will make things easier to find and easier to use. It will mean that the big wedge of stickies will get divided into appropriate sections, making them easier to read too.

Questions, comments, suggestions?

Edit - appalling title typo - MikeyJ

I have a secret dungeon where the walls drip with the acid of sarcastic applause and audience silences. It's currently occupied by LOLcats.

We could have an entire section really couldn't we?

If it's non-spoilery humour then General/Updates (clearly tagged [HUMOUR] of course) and if it's spoilery humour then in movie discussion (also clearly tagged) Smile I'm not sure whether we'd ever require reference humour or press humour, but we'd be fine if there was any.

Personally, I like having one board to check. Really, I enter via this board and exit via this board. I have no idea what the rest of Unfiction looks like. So, I'd prefer it stay a single board. But if you want to undertake a major reorganization in the ninth inning, ... it's your world boss.

No need for a subforum for spammers.

You can still do that (if you really want to avoid the rest of unforum Wink ) you'd just see something like this when you arrived and then could select which of the categories above that you wanted to read.

And it's not my world...apart from the fact that would mean that I really needed to develop a social life (and mine's quite rosy, thanks for asking) the forums are here for everyone. Hope that didn't sound too group-huggy.

Seems reasonable but there will be a few new headaches for you mods:
1. Moving threads that will indubitably be posted in the wrong section
2. Duplicate/cross-posted threads in multiple sections
3. Trolls that knowingly post spoilers out in the open

Any efforts to consolidate and streamline the info presented within this forum, are of course welcome...

But Mr.T sure makes a valid point...

Self-flagellation is my middle name (no, really).

Trolls we can deal with. We would deal with cross-posting the same way as we do currently - trout or request that discussion continues in the more appropriate thread and moving threads is achieved in a jiffy. Plus you guys all know what you're doing and can cope so it's newer members that will need the guidance and everyone can help with that - we don't mod in a vacuum, you all do it too Smile

I agree with Mr.T, and with Mikey, but aside from that, we really do need a spoiler sub-section regardless, no one like spoilers...the "early" reviews can go in there too...

I think I've got a pretty good grip on what you're proposing. What it means to me is instead of checking which threads are active/new on one board, I'll have to check which threads are active/new on multiple boards. The boss comment was sarcastic. I know most of you are volunteers. Nevertheless, it's a real stretch to imagine I was commenting on your social life. The grain of truth is, you've already decided that you're going to do it, if for no other reason, because it's something you want to do. All I'm saying is, maybe you should wait for it to break before fixing it.

Exactly - a couple of extra clicks (two I think, no five in total as you have to navigate out of each one you go into). The price for organisation.

I know - sorry I'm a terrible tease.

It is something that personally I think will genuinely help. I don't want to stir up trouble for myself as I'm inherently idle so it's not something that I'd suggest for the sake of it. I consider it more preparatory than tinkering where tinkering isn't required. Constant care and attention rather than a break/repair cycle.

I love the idea MikeyJ, so when are the changes going to take place?

I'm not vested. I don't think it's going to break. I'll adapt.
