It was in the latest article in Empire that JJ Abrams mentioned that playing the ARG wasn't vital to understanding Cloverfield, but you'd get a few jokes out of it. I'm thinking it's just a straight-forward monster movie for those who didn't play the ARG, so I doubt your theory. But it's possible.

true it looks like some expensive work
i think that they will have to show some tag background videos
at the begining or have rob explain it or something or yeah
people will be like WTF?

 		Tag keeps claiming it was an earthquake. And the "Terrorists" are enviro-nuts. The media is overly friendly towards the enviro-nuts, they wouldn't dare call them terrorists.

So to the American news agencies, Japan lost an oil platform due to an undersea earthquake. What effect will this have on us? Oil might go up 25 cents a barrel.

Also, look at the box. In the Empire interview Matt Reeves mentioned that years ago he walked in on JJ making an "incredibly beautiful box" and that JJ found the idea of a container that holds something fascinating. That people would want to know what's in the box but the box itself is more mysterious and exciting than what's inside.

Well, that kind of supports my theory. It wouldn't make any sense to create a movie that depended on the audience playing some online game. So in order for people to not be just totally scratching their heads (and critics potentially creating a negative buzz), I think they have to provide SOME backstory or minimal explanation for the monster's origin. Showing these videos, and perhaps a few other short ones, would be a quick and easy way to do that. As a bonus, they maintain the whole handheld camera vibe that's being established in this movie.

I have no idea if it'll actually turn out this way, but it's an interesting possibility. Either way, this is probably the most fun we've had around here since, well, ever!

 		phew....

Reading 24 pages of posts in one sitting is a lot... a lot of the Awsomest!

So first, Wow, just wow. I was totally unprepared for the magnitude and scope of these releases and they have made my day/week. I hope there are more and I pray to MGP Jamie sees one of these.

Finally, list of most intriguing clips:

1. Who is the scientist in the phone camera clip you see clearly. Could this be Teddy?

2. What is the translation of the memo seen in the news reports?

3. If the woman in the the video is "Janice" we need to know everythign about the box adn pictures we can.
